The Arkel panniers I've bought came with a scrap of fabric to show have tough the material is. What matters for this use is that the fabric seems to have some waterproofing applied to it.

By using it to cover a padlock it slows rust, but it also keeps water out of the locking mechanism, where it can freeze and prevent the lock from unlocking.

On particular days without the cover I stood there holding a lighter to the padlock!

Protecting padlocks this way is too easy not to do. Another material like vinyl would also work well.

This shot is taken just a few miles from where I live. There used to be two doors in between, to protect us from the sea. I only did put a little contrast, because I like the image the way it is. I erased some rubbish too.

The man on the right is the head of the parents committee. UNICEF trains selected parents committees on good governance of schools. They are normally required to sign on the waybills of incoming goods, as is one student representative, along with the head teacher.

The two men in the middle are Jonas and Kisembo teachers of class 5 and 6. Both went through a week long UNICEF training on how to incorporate child soldiers into their classes. This is programme is designed to extend our support for the children after their time in the Transition Centers. Jonas had 2 such children and Kisembo 3. They both found the training useful and appropriate. According to the teachers and the director the children seem to have settled well into the classes, are doing well and have forgotten their time in the armed groups. UNICEF has signed a contract with the school whereby we provide funds for the school and in return the school accepts 30 vulnerable children to be educated for free. Normally parents pay $1 ‘collation’ per month to cover school running costs. 14 children are orphans and 16 were child soldiers. The director and the committee decided to use the funds to buy furniture for the school.

On the left is Katya our very dynamic Education officer who unfortunately for us is moving on to UNICEF Indonesia.

Kosovo* has a rich and diverse cultural and religious heritage, but that diversity is threatened by a lack of institutional support for preservation, protection, and promotion. Limited awareness of cultural and religious heritage also puts it at risk.

An EU-funded initiative is now changing that. We are bringing communities of Kosovo together to work on renovation, beautification, and rehabilitation of their shared heritage.

UNMISS is continuing to provide protection to approximately 10,000 civilians in Wau, following the

outbreak of violence. At this time, UNMISS military forces have created a security cordon around an area

adjacent to the UN base and peacekeepers are conducting active patrolling to ensure the safety of the

displaced civilians within this area. This area

is currently secure and humanitarian partners are providing

basic assistance to the displaced people. UNMISS is currently negotiating with the SPLA for access to Wau

town to conduct additional patrols to protect the civilian population in the town.

civilians.

Opening the gates is an exceptional measure of last resort to be undertaken only when all other

means of protection have been exhausted.
