On 4 June 2013, West Wallsend Colliery (WWC) notified OEH of a pollution incident involving leakage of grouting material into a natural drainage line in SCA. A further, smaller grout leak was reported by the Colliery on 20 September 2013, which is understood to have occurred in February 2013. OEH subsequently issued a clean up notice to WWC to removed the grout and remediate the site. For more information visit: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/protectedareas/SugarloafSCA.htm

Quite possibly the most adorable endangered species, sadly spotting these guys at Miquelon has become a somewhat rare event

Rolling Thunder is an annual motorcycle rally held in Washington, DC during the Memorial Day weekend to call for the government's recognition and protection of Prisoners of War (POWs) and those Missing in Action (MIAs). This year, approximately 400,000 veterans will roar across Washington, DC on their motorcycles as a tribute to American war heroes.

The entrance to Glen Echo Park has undergone many changes. The 1940 art deco design has been restored, but prior entrances included a stone entrance in the 1890s with the early trolley lines in front and the 1911 entrance, which featured numerous lightbulbs and two towers, and was in place for 30 years.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, known also as Elbe sandstone highlands. The images show the North Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The name Elbe Sandstone Mountains derives from the sandstone which was carved by erosion. The river Elbe breaks through the mountain range in a steep and narrow valley.

Pacific squid

This sea creature lives in the surface layers of water with depths of no more than 200 metres and in waters with a temperature between 0.4 and 28°С. During its migration period, the squid approaches the shores of the islands in Peter the Great Bay and frequently appears within the borders of the Far East Marine Biosphere Reserve. In the warmer years, the northern border of the calamari habitat expands up to the Commander Islands; its mass accumulations were registered up to the 57°n.l.

The Far East Marine Reserve works to study and preserve the marine mollusk fauna. The squid is the major connecting link between the coastal and open sea communities in the marine environmental systems under the Reserve’s protection.

The landscape has changed dramatically in my hometown this year, politically, environmentally, and beyond. These new towers sprung up along the nine-springs e-way, a wetland and kayaking area.

Hippos are recognizable by their barrel-shaped torsos, enormous mouths and teeth, nearly hairless bodies, stubby legs and great size, adults average 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and 1,300 kg (2,900 lb) for males and females respectively, making them the largest species of land mammal after the 3 species of elephants and the white and Indian rhinoceros. It can easily outrun a human, being capable of reaching 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive and unpredictable creatures in the world and, as such, ranks among the most dangerous animals in Africa. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs, their closest living relatives are whales and porpoises.

Taken the day after a rain storm at Great Falls Park in Fairfax County, Virginia. The river is the Potomac, as it crosses the fall line. The land on the left side and in the background is within Fairfax County; the land on the right bank of the river is within Montgomery County, Maryland.

This is a panorama, not a crop. I used 4 overlapping angles from 1 tripod position, and shot 3 exposures at each angle, each spaced at 1 1/3. I processed the HDR for each angle first using PhotoMatrix. Then, I used PhotoStitch to combine the four resulting composite images into one panorama.
