Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men worldwide, second only to lung cancer in incidence. In 2020 alone, more than 1.4 million new cases were diagnosed globally. The prevalence of prostate cancer in India has increased in recent years, with significant variations across regions. The lack of proactive screening, societal stigma, and a lack of awareness contribute to underreporting and delayed diagnosis. This is counterproductive as early detection and appropriate treatment can greatly improve outcomes, making awareness and regular screening crucial for those at risk.

What are the risk factors of prostate cancer?
Several factors can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. It primarily affects men over the age of 50, and the risk increases significantly with age. Race and genetics play a role as well. African American men face a higher risk and often more aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Further, a history of prostate cancer in close relatives doubles the risk. Lifestyle is another important factor that impacts the onset of prostate cancer. Diets high in red meat, dairy, and processed foods, along with a lack of physical activity, may increase the risk. Conversely, diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats may reduce it.
When to see a urologist?
Prostate cancer often shows few symptoms in its early stages but may later present with difficulty urinating, changes in urinary patterns, blood in urine or semen, pain in the back, hips, or pelvis, and erectile dysfunction. These symptoms can also arise from benign conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), making a timely consultation with a urologist essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.
What does screening for prostate cancer involve?
Screening typically involves a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test, sometimes coupled with a digital rectal exam (DRE). High PSA levels can indicate prostate cancer but may also result from non-cancerous conditions. The PSA test can detect cancer early, it has also been associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment. As a result, some countries recommend PSA testing only after certain age thresholds or specific risk factors are present. Advanced imaging, MRI, and biopsy are often used to confirm a diagnosis and determine the cancer’s aggressiveness.
What are the treatment options?
Prostate cancer treatment depends on factors like the cancer stage, overall health, and patient preferences. Options include active surveillance for low-risk cases, surgery (prostatectomy) for localized cancer, and radiation therapy to target cancer cells. Advanced cases may require hormone therapy to reduce testosterone levels, slowing cancer growth, or chemotherapy and targeted therapy when other treatments are ineffective.

Can prostate cancer be prevented?
While prostate cancer cannot always be prevented, lifestyle changes may help lower the risk. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, combined with regular exercise, can improve overall health and potentially reduce cancer risk. Routine screening, especially for those with high-risk factors, is crucial. Diets high in red meat and dairy or sedentary lifestyles may increase risk, while nutrients like lycopene, found in tomatoes, might offer some protection.
What is the survival rate of prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates among cancers when detected early. For localized and regional prostate cancers, the 5-year survival rate is almost 100% in countries with advanced healthcare, thanks to early detection and treatment advancements
