A year ago today, March 18th I was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer. I no longer have a Prostate and 99.9% of the Cancer has gone. This old battle scarred Tortoiseshell reminded me of the last 12 months.

The Charger...

.

The 1969 Dodge Charger. This shot is of the lovingly restored and modified 70's muscle car...It has been difficult not getting to go to car shows and other public gatherings for the better part of a year now since Covid19 changed our lives for what seems like forever. In September of 2017 i spent the afternoon at the Powerade center for the annual prostate cancer awareness car show... this weekend. the parking lots were stacked and packed full of old classics, collectors editions and unbelievable classic relics from the not too distant past. what a great cause and a super turnout. I cannot wait till things return to somewhat normal again. .

Movember 2015

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as depression in men, prostate cancer and other male cancers, and associated charities. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at www.Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to "change the face of men's health."

66769 League Managers Association / Paul Taylor Our Inspiration passes Three Horse Shoes (between March and Whittlesea), working 4M23 10.46 Felixstowe North - Birch Coppice. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]

After grabbing a bite to eat in March following the late morning session at Manea station, I came here for the afternoon's westbound freights, although I'd already missed the first (which had a normal GBRf 66 on it). I'd been told this loco was "absolutely pristine", so wanted to make the effort to get a shot that included a good view of the loco. After this, I changed to a 135mm lens to do something different, from a lower level and more head-on.

High cloud made the light slightly soft (as reflected in the EXIF data), and this required a slight tickle in Photoshop.

Sponsoring Prostate Cancer UK, This Fire Tender was seen on display in Hulls Queen Victoria Square,

Hi friends, I got home yesterday lunchtime from my last radiotherapy session in Wałbrzych 75 kilometres away just as this sudden snow came down. Glad I don't have to travel there every day anymore, particularly today as the roads are very slushy and slippery and it's still snowing!

This shot was taken early this morning from our front porch after 6 inches of snow seems to confirm that spring has NOT sprung yet as many believed it had -To jest Polska!!

My results are excellent and the therapy has so far been effective. Now it is regular checks for the next 2-3 years to keep safe.

To all the guys on here:

Prostate cancer is a silent killer and you never know you have it until it is often late. Read up on it and watch for small telltale signs and get regular PSA tests from the recommended age. I've been lucky and caught it at first stage as I kept my eye on things. The biopsies, tests and treatment are nothing to be afraid of. Just ask me if you want to know anything.

The most important thing is to stay POSITIVE.

I hope this warning may save someone. Take care.

Patrick

The Sleeper...

Last summer I attended the the 14th Annual Cruisin' for A Cure Canada;

Something I have been a huge supporter of in the past. The Car Show That Saves Men's Lives, which is held annually at the Powerade center in Brampton.

that was the first one in three years as Coiid shut it down and this is the first one since 2019. the turn out was amazing with over 400 cars participating and a smaller than typical crowd of only 3000. hopefully next year will be better.

This is a shot of a unbadged Sleeper car. it boasts almost 700hp and is a tuned racing machine. Guess which car it is in the comments.

Please tell your husbands, fathers, uncles, grandfather brothers and any man you care about to get a PSA test it changes the odds from 5 % survivability to 93%.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 41 will die of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can be a fatal disease, but due to early detection most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will not die from it.

74% of prostate cancers are diagnosed early at Stage I and II. The probability of surviving prostate cancer at least five years after diagnosis is about 93% in Canada.

For more information check out the website for the car show.

This is a picture of Rosey just before we left Leeton for Griffith and also for the start of my prostate cancer treatment in Wagga Wagga, a city 126 klms away from Leeton. There are two linear generators, each worth about $3,000,000. The staff are amazing!! We did not know we would be leaving Leeton when I took this picture, I had not begun counselling yet so did not know about the caretaking position in Griffith, more on that later!!

Rosey in her usual smiley pose, I do love her smile, really lights up her face and mine too and I know from your very generous and loving comments you love to see her smiling happiness too!!! I believe this is English lavendar. I love how the petals come out each side of the "flower".

Rosey and I have now left Leeton and have taken up a caretaking position in Griffith with Barnabas House, a crisis counselling centre run by the Baptist Church - this is a permanent position for as long as we want to be here. There are 50 units, 2 conjoined, which makes around 35 buildings, plus the office block. There are 3 counsellors here, and one is the Baptist Minister here in Griffith in New South Wales, which is around 60 klms from where we used to live in Leeton. We loved our caretaking position in Leeton but it was time to move on. Rev Kev was my counsellor and he offered us the position which we accpeted.

My treatment is going well, thanks to all the prayers and support I have received from my dear Flickr friends. It is a very precise procedure these days, I lay on this bed, the staff move me to align with the cross beams, then they leave the room and final adjustments are done from outside the room. A CAT scan is done firstly to see that my bladder is full so as to minimise injury from the rays that are zapping the cancer cells. If my bladder is not very full, then I am asked to leave the room, drink more water and then return - this has not happened as my bladder has been to capacity.

We are staying in a beautiful lodge purpose-built for cancer patients and it is like a motel, a great home away from home, and all the people here are "walking the walk and talking the talk"!! All are in different stages of cancer and in various parts of their bodies. We are taken from the lodge in a mini-van driven by volunteer drivers and dropped at the front door of the clinic and returned again to our lodge. Rosey and I feel like we are on a new adventure and a holiday, such is the non-invasive form of treatment and we are already making new friends.

Thanks our dear Flickr friends for your love and support and being there when we need you all the most. Thanks also for your visits and comments and faves, we appreciate very much. We use the library in Wagga Wagga, we can have up to two hours per day for free, how special is that!!!

I took this last August when dad was on radiation for his prostate cancer. I went to all his treatments with him. He often brought flowers to the staff picked from his front yard. Dad was upbeat during his bout with cancer and is now off all treatment and I'm happy to say in 2012 he's cancer free.

At 86, he's doing great....he wears hearing aids....but other than that, dad is fit as a fiddle and has no other health concerns.

Happy Father's Day to my dad and yours. !!!!

NHGRI researchers and their collaborators have identified a specific genomic signature of some aggressive prostate tumors, which may help pinpoint specific treatment options. Findings from the study were published April 15 online in The American Journal of Human Genetics. The new finding focuses on BRCA2 mutations, which are associated with breast and ovarian cancer, but also increase men's risk for prostate cancer. Both men and women can inherit a faulty BRCA2 gene from either their mother or father. When working properly, the BRCA2 gene helps stop cells from becoming cancerous by producing proteins that fix damage to DNA.

All men are at risk for prostate cancer, but most men diagnosed with it are older than 65. Additionally, as men get older, their risk for developing another disease, osteoporosis, increases. Osteoporosis is of particular concern for men with prostate cancer, because recent research has found a strong link between hormone deprivation therapy - which is one of the treatments for prostate cancer - and osteoporosis.

New findings on prostate cancer may enable doctors to make better diagnoses and prognoses for patients and provide novel directions for therapies, according to a new study from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Network. Most prostate cancers are detected early while still confined to the prostate, a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. While most cases remain harmless - benign - for decades, other subtypes of prostate cancers can be aggressive, and spread to other parts of the body (metastasize), making them extremely difficult to treat. It is currently difficult for healthcare providers to distinguish which cancers will remain harmless and which will metastasize.

Yet another 'celebrity' loco visits the area and one that I have not seen since its revised 'Prostate Cancer UK' livery was No 66769 'LMA (League Managers Association). Seen passing Rainhill Station on 4Z62 11.30hrs East Midlands Gateway to Seaforth CT 'liner'. Unfortunately the weather was not kind this particular week, so ended up as my only image of this loco. No 66769 also had another name (##) 'Paul Taylor, Our Inspiration' which I believe is named after GBRF Contract Manager who was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. 6th July 2022.

## Sadly Paul Taylor passed away on 9th August 2022, age 51, still young and missed by many people. R.I.P. ##

this year, In the US alone, over 200,000 homes will be affected by prostate cancer

British postcard in the Real Photogravure Portrait series. Photo: Fredric March in Anthony Adverse (Mervyn LeRoy, 1936).

Fredric March (1897-1975) played for a few years in stock, and, when talkies came in 1928, he was offered a part in The Dummy (Robert Milton, 1929). His performances grew steadily in dramatic appeal, and with his send-up of John Barrymore in The Royal Family of Broadway (George Cukor, Cyril Gardner, 1930), he became a star. He won the Oscar for Best Actor twice: for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Rouben Mamoulian, 1931) and The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946).

Fredric March was born Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel in 1897 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. he was the son of Cora Brown Marcher, a schoolteacher from England, and John F. Bickel, a devout Presbyterian Church elder who worked in the wholesale hardware business. March attended the Winslow Elementary School, Racine High School, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He served in the United States Army during World War I as an artillery lieutenant. After the war, he began a career in banking but in 1920 found himself cast as an extra in films being produced in New York. In 1924, he shortened Frederick to Fredric, shortened his mother's maiden name from Marcher to March, and his stage name was born. Fredric March starred on the Broadway stage first in 1926 and would return there between screen appearances later on. He won plaudits and an Academy Award nomination for his send-up of John Barrymore in The Royal Family of Broadway (George Cukor, Cyril Gardner, 1930) opposite Ina Claire. March would win the Oscar for Best Actor for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Rouben Mamoulian, 1931) and three more Academy Award nominations would come his way. Wikipedia: "Like Laurence Olivier, March had a rare protean quality to his acting that allowed him to assume almost any persona convincingly, from Robert Browning to William Jennings Bryan to Dr. Jekyll - or Mr. Hyde." He starred in a series of classic films based on stage hits and classic novels like Design for Living (Ernst Lubitsch, 1933) with Gary Cooper and Miriam Hopkins, Death Takes a Holiday (Mitchell Leisen, 1934), Les Misérables (Richard Boleslawski, 1935) with Charles Laughton, Anna Karenina (Clarence Brown, 1935) with Greta Garbo; Anthony Adverse (Mervyn LeRoy, 1936) with Olivia de Havilland; and as the original Norman Maine in A Star is Born (William A. Wellman, 1937) with Janet Gaynor, for which he received his third Academy Award nomination. In 1936, March co-founded the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League (HANL), along with writers Dorothy Parker and Donald Ogden Stewart, director Fritz Lang, and composer Oscar Hammerstein. In 1938, March was one of many Hollywood personalities investigated by the House of Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) and the hunt for Communists in the film community. In July 1940, he was again questioned by a HUAC subcommittee led by Representative Martin Dies.

In 1947, Fredric March won the highest awards for giving the best performances of the year in two distinct mediums: an Oscar for The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946) and a Tony for 'Years Ago'. Two years later, he was targeted for blacklisting by the House Un-American Activities Committee because of his supposed "leftist" politics. March continued to play varying roles from heavy drama to light comedy and often portrayed men in anguish, such as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman (Laslo Benedek, 1951). As his career advanced he progressed from leading man to character actor. After 1958, he worked mostly on stage. On stage, he won two Tony Awards as Best Actor (Dramatic), the first in 1947 for his performance in Ruth Gordon's 'Years Ago', an award shared with José Ferrer for 'Cyrano de Bergerac', and the second, ten years later, in 1957, for his landmark performance in Eugene O'Neill's 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'. He was also nominated in the same category in 1962 for Paddy Chayefsky's 'Gideon'. On-screen, March co-starred with Spencer Tracy in the film Inherit the Wind (Stanley Kramer, 1960), in which he played a dramatised version of famous orator and political figure William Jennings Bryan. In the 1960s, March played President Jordan Lyman in the political thriller Seven Days in May (John Frankenheimer, 1964), in which he co-starred with Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, and Edmond O'Brien. The part earned March a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actor. For a while after undergoing major surgery for prostate cancer in 1970, it seemed March's acting career was finished. However, he was able to give one final great performance in The Iceman Cometh (John Frankenheimer, 1973) with Lee Marvin and Robert Ryan. In 1975, Fredric March died of prostate cancer in Los Angeles. He was married twice. From 1925 till 1927, he was married to Ellis Baker. In 1927 he married actress Florence Eldridge with whom he adopted two children, Penelope ("Penny", 1932) and Anthony (1934). The couple remained together till his death.
