A year ago today, March 18th I was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer. I no longer have a Prostate and 99.9% of the Cancer has gone. This old battle scarred Tortoiseshell reminded me of the last 12 months.

The Charger...

.

The 1969 Dodge Charger. This shot is of the lovingly restored and modified 70's muscle car...It has been difficult not getting to go to car shows and other public gatherings for the better part of a year now since Covid19 changed our lives for what seems like forever. In September of 2017 i spent the afternoon at the Powerade center for the annual prostate cancer awareness car show... this weekend. the parking lots were stacked and packed full of old classics, collectors editions and unbelievable classic relics from the not too distant past. what a great cause and a super turnout. I cannot wait till things return to somewhat normal again. .

Movember 2015

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as depression in men, prostate cancer and other male cancers, and associated charities. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at www.Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to "change the face of men's health."

After grabbing a bite to eat in March following the late morning session at Manea station, I came here for the afternoon's westbound freights, although I'd already missed the first (which had a normal GBRf 66 on it). I'd been told this loco was "absolutely pristine", so wanted to make the effort to get a shot that included a good view of the loco. After this, I changed to a 135mm lens to do something different, from a lower level and more head-on.

High cloud made the light slightly soft (as reflected in the EXIF data), and this required a slight tickle in Photoshop.

Sponsoring Prostate Cancer UK, This Fire Tender was seen on display in Hulls Queen Victoria Square,

Hi friends, I got home yesterday lunchtime from my last radiotherapy session in Wałbrzych 75 kilometres away just as this sudden snow came down. Glad I don't have to travel there every day anymore, particularly today as the roads are very slushy and slippery and it's still snowing!

This shot was taken early this morning from our front porch after 6 inches of snow seems to confirm that spring has NOT sprung yet as many believed it had -To jest Polska!!

My results are excellent and the therapy has so far been effective. Now it is regular checks for the next 2-3 years to keep safe.

To all the guys on here:

Prostate cancer is a silent killer and you never know you have it until it is often late. Read up on it and watch for small telltale signs and get regular PSA tests from the recommended age. I've been lucky and caught it at first stage as I kept my eye on things. The biopsies, tests and treatment are nothing to be afraid of. Just ask me if you want to know anything.

The most important thing is to stay POSITIVE.

I hope this warning may save someone. Take care.

The Sleeper...

Last summer I attended the the 14th Annual Cruisin' for A Cure Canada;

Something I have been a huge supporter of in the past. The Car Show That Saves Men's Lives, which is held annually at the Powerade center in Brampton.

that was the first one in three years as Coiid shut it down and this is the first one since 2019. the turn out was amazing with over 400 cars participating and a smaller than typical crowd of only 3000. hopefully next year will be better.

This is a shot of a unbadged Sleeper car. it boasts almost 700hp and is a tuned racing machine. Guess which car it is in the comments.

Please tell your husbands, fathers, uncles, grandfather brothers and any man you care about to get a PSA test it changes the odds from 5 % survivability to 93%.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 41 will die of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can be a fatal disease, but due to early detection most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will not die from it.

74% of prostate cancers are diagnosed early at Stage I and II. The probability of surviving prostate cancer at least five years after diagnosis is about 93% in Canada.

For more information check out the website for the car show.

This strikingly effective street mural in Fulham Road, west London, is a temporary installation – which, given its quality, seems a shame. It celebrates Prostate Cancer UK’s Man of Men, representing the hundreds of thousands of fathers, brothers, sons, nephews and friends across the UK who are impacted by this killer disease.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men: every year, globally, some 375,000 men die from this pernicious disease, including more than 12,000 here in the UK.

Prostate cancer is most certainly treatable if it’s caught in time – so it’s crucial than men should check their risk. It takes just 30 seconds. Go here: www.prostatecanceruk.org/muralqr Oh, and let’s hear it for Global Street Art, which funded this magnificent mural.

The proverb "An apple a day keeps the doctor away.", addressing the health effects of the fruit, dates from the 19th century Wales. Research suggests that apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Compared to many other fruits and vegetables, apples contain relatively low amounts of vitamin C, but are a rich source of other antioxidant compounds. The fiber content, while less than in most other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements and may thus reduce the risk of colon cancer. They may also help with heart disease, weight loss and controlling cholesterol as they do not have any cholesterol, have fiber, which reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption, and (like most fruits and vegetables) are bulky for their caloric content.

There is evidence that in vitro apples possess phenolic compounds which may be cancer-protective and demonstrate antioxidant activity. The predominant phenolic phytochemicals in apples are quercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B2.

This is a picture of Rosey just before we left Leeton for Griffith and also for the start of my prostate cancer treatment in Wagga Wagga, a city 126 klms away from Leeton. There are two linear generators, each worth about $3,000,000. The staff are amazing!! We did not know we would be leaving Leeton when I took this picture, I had not begun counselling yet so did not know about the caretaking position in Griffith, more on that later!!

Rosey in her usual smiley pose, I do love her smile, really lights up her face and mine too and I know from your very generous and loving comments you love to see her smiling happiness too!!! I believe this is English lavendar. I love how the petals come out each side of the "flower".

Rosey and I have now left Leeton and have taken up a caretaking position in Griffith with Barnabas House, a crisis counselling centre run by the Baptist Church - this is a permanent position for as long as we want to be here. There are 50 units, 2 conjoined, which makes around 35 buildings, plus the office block. There are 3 counsellors here, and one is the Baptist Minister here in Griffith in New South Wales, which is around 60 klms from where we used to live in Leeton. We loved our caretaking position in Leeton but it was time to move on. Rev Kev was my counsellor and he offered us the position which we accpeted.

My treatment is going well, thanks to all the prayers and support I have received from my dear Flickr friends. It is a very precise procedure these days, I lay on this bed, the staff move me to align with the cross beams, then they leave the room and final adjustments are done from outside the room. A CAT scan is done firstly to see that my bladder is full so as to minimise injury from the rays that are zapping the cancer cells. If my bladder is not very full, then I am asked to leave the room, drink more water and then return - this has not happened as my bladder has been to capacity.

We are staying in a beautiful lodge purpose-built for cancer patients and it is like a motel, a great home away from home, and all the people here are "walking the walk and talking the talk"!! All are in different stages of cancer and in various parts of their bodies. We are taken from the lodge in a mini-van driven by volunteer drivers and dropped at the front door of the clinic and returned again to our lodge. Rosey and I feel like we are on a new adventure and a holiday, such is the non-invasive form of treatment and we are already making new friends.

Thanks our dear Flickr friends for your love and support and being there when we need you all the most. Thanks also for your visits and comments and faves, we appreciate very much. We use the library in Wagga Wagga, we can have up to two hours per day for free, how special is that!!!

He caught me

off guard

Waiting

in line

For nothing

in particular

Just hanging

out

With time

on my hands

“Your number?” he smiled

darkly

One sleeve extended

but empty

Shifting his weight

from shoulder

to shoulder

As I shook my head

backing up and away

“Number?,” I mumbled

At a loss

suddenly

for words

The orange plastic piece

burning hot in my hand

The cipher indistinct

but glowing

“Yours,” he nodded

approaching with certainty

His knowing

dark smile

mocking

“No way,”

I stammered

Stumbling and shrugging

Back

Back

Eluding his touch

his foul breath

those glowing eyes

Ducking

just in time

I hear

and miss

The sudden swish

of a blade

neck high

“I'm not done here.

Not going with you

at this time.

Not ready.

Not willing.

And just not that easy,

my hooded friend.”

He grumbles

mumbles

and shakes his head

Unaccustomed to such folly

He turns away

settles for the next

in line

I took this last August when dad was on radiation for his prostate cancer. I went to all his treatments with him. He often brought flowers to the staff picked from his front yard. Dad was upbeat during his bout with cancer and is now off all treatment and I'm happy to say in 2012 he's cancer free.

At 86, he's doing great....he wears hearing aids....but other than that, dad is fit as a fiddle and has no other health concerns.

Happy Father's Day to my dad and yours. !!!!

British postcard by GoCard. Dennis Hopper in Der amerikanische Freund/The American Friend (Wim Wenders, 1977).

Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) was a multi-talented American actor, director, and visual artist, but also one of the true "enfants terribles" of Hollywood. In 1970, he won a Golden Palm for Easy Rider (1969) and Hopper was also Oscar-nominated for writing this groundbreaking anthem to freedom and rebellion. In 1987, he received a second nomination for his supporting role in Hoosiers (1986).

Dennis Lee Hopper was born in Dodge City, Kansas, in 1936. When he was 13, Hopper and his family moved to San Diego. Hopper was voted most likely to succeed at Helix High School, where he was active in the drama club, speech, and choir. It was there that he developed an interest in acting, studying at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. He attended the Actors Studio and made his first television appearance in the TV series Medic (1954). He debuted on the big screen in 1955 with a supporting role in the film that would make James Dean famous: Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, 1955). Dean was both his friend and mentor. They also appeared together in Giant (George Stevens, 1956), with Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Dean's death in a car accident in September 1955 affected the young Hopper deeply. Jason Ankeny at AllMovie: "After Dean's tragic death, it was often remarked that Hopper attempted to fill his friend's shoes by borrowing much of his persona, absorbing the late icon's famously defiant attitude and becoming so temperamental that his once-bright career quickly began to wane." Hopper appeared in the Western Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (John Sturges, 1957), starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. After a run-in with director Henry Hathaway on the set of From Hell to Texas (1958), Hopper was reportedly blackballed from major Hollywood feature film roles until 1965, during which time he was working on television. In 1961, Hopper played his first lead role in Night Tide, an atmospheric supernatural thriller involving a mermaid in an amusement park. He returned in The Sons of Katie Elder (Henry Hathaway, 1965), featuring John Wayne. Hopper also acted in another John Wayne film, True Grit (Henry Hathaway, 1969), and during its production, he became well acquainted with Wayne. He appeared in a number of psychedelic films, including The Trip (1967) and the Monkees feature Head (Bob Rafelson, 1968), but Hopper really became the symbol of the sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'pop generation with Easy Rider (1969). He wrote the script together with co-star Peter Fonda and Terry Southern and it was also his directorial debut. Fonda, Hopper, and a young Jack Nicholson were the stars. They had less than half a million dollars in the budget and an idea about motorbikes, a drug deal, and an LSD trip. Besides showing drug use on film, it was one of the first films to portray the hippie lifestyle. Their long hair became a point of contention in various scenes during the film. Initially rejected by producer Roger Corman, the film became a countercultural touchstone. As the director, Hopper won wide acclaim for his improvisational methods and innovative editing. Easy Rider earned Hopper a Cannes Film Festival Award for "Best First Work" and he shared with Fonda and Southern a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film grossed forty million dollars worldwide and broke open the Hollywood bastion, benefiting a new generation of filmmakers from Martin Scorsese to Steven Spielberg.

Dennis Hopper's star faded considerably after the critical and commercial failure of his second film as director, The Last Movie (Dennis Hopper, 1971). Jason Ankeny calls it "an excessive, self-indulgent mess that, while acclaimed by jurors at the Venice Film Festival, was otherwise savaged by critics and snubbed by audiences." Hopper later admitted, he was seriously abusing various substances during the 1970s, both legal and illegal, which led to a downturn in the quality of his work. He acted in such interesting European films as Der amerikanische Freund/The American Friend (Wim Wenders, 1977) opposite Bruno Ganz. He returned to the Hollywood A-list thanks to his role as a pot-smoking, hyper-manic photojournalist in the Vietnam War epic and blockbuster Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979), alongside Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen. Hopper traveled to Canada to appear in a small film titled Out of the Blue. At the outset of the production, he was also asked to take over as director, and to the surprise of many, the picture appeared on schedule and to decent reviews and honours at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1983, Hopper entered a drug rehabilitation program, and that year he played critically acclaimed roles in Rumble Fish (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983) and the spy thriller The Osterman Weekend (Sam Peckinpah, 1983). He created a sensation as the aggressive, gas-huffing villain Frank Booth in the eerie and erotic Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986). For this role, he won critical acclaim and several awards. That same year he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an alcoholic assistant of basketball coach Gene Hackman in Hoosiers (David Anspaugh, 1986). Hopper's fourth directorial outing came about through the controversial gang film Colors (1988), starring Sean Penn and Robert Duvall. It was followed by an Emmy-nominated lead performance in Paris Trout (1991). In 1990, Dennis Hopper directed The Hot Spot, which was not a box-office hit. Hopper had more success portraying the villain of Speed (Jan de Bont, 1994), starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Hopper received a Razzie Award for his supporting role in Waterworld (Kevin Reynolds, 1997), starring Kevin Costner. In 2001, Hopper had a role in the television series 24. His life story counted five marriages, seven directions, and over 130 film and television appearances. He also collaborated on the Gorillaz song 'Fire Coming Out Of The Monkeys Head'. He recorded the lyrics for it. In addition to his film work, Hopper was also active as a visual artist; he worked as a photographer, painter, and sculptor. Among other things, he made the cover of the album River Deep - Mountain High by Ike & Tina Turner. In 2001, his work was exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In 2009, Hopper's manager announced that Dennis Hopper had prostate cancer. He underwent several treatments. Future film plans were postponed. In January 2010, it was announced that Hopper was beyond treatment. On 26 March of the same year, Hopper was honoured with a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dennis Hopper died in 2010, at the age of 74, at his home in Venice, California. Jason Ankeny at AllMovie: "The odyssey of Dennis Hopper was one of Hollywood's longest, strangest trips. A onetime teen performer, he went through a series of career metamorphoses -- studio pariah, rebel filmmaker, drug casualty, and comeback kid -- before finally settling comfortably into the role of character actor par excellence, with a rogues' gallery of killers and freaks unmatched in psychotic intensity and demented glee. " In 1971, Hopper had filmed scenes for Orson Welles' The Other Side of the Wind appearing as himself. After decades of legal, financial, and technical delays, the film was finally released on Netflix in 2018

NHGRI researchers and their collaborators have identified a specific genomic signature of some aggressive prostate tumors, which may help pinpoint specific treatment options. Findings from the study were published April 15 online in The American Journal of Human Genetics. The new finding focuses on BRCA2 mutations, which are associated with breast and ovarian cancer, but also increase men's risk for prostate cancer. Both men and women can inherit a faulty BRCA2 gene from either their mother or father. When working properly, the BRCA2 gene helps stop cells from becoming cancerous by producing proteins that fix damage to DNA.

All men are at risk for prostate cancer, but most men diagnosed with it are older than 65. Additionally, as men get older, their risk for developing another disease, osteoporosis, increases. Osteoporosis is of particular concern for men with prostate cancer, because recent research has found a strong link between hormone deprivation therapy - which is one of the treatments for prostate cancer - and osteoporosis.

New findings on prostate cancer may enable doctors to make better diagnoses and prognoses for patients and provide novel directions for therapies, according to a new study from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Network. Most prostate cancers are detected early while still confined to the prostate, a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. While most cases remain harmless - benign - for decades, other subtypes of prostate cancers can be aggressive, and spread to other parts of the body (metastasize), making them extremely difficult to treat. It is currently difficult for healthcare providers to distinguish which cancers will remain harmless and which will metastasize.

Yet another 'celebrity' loco visits the area and one that I have not seen since its revised 'Prostate Cancer UK' livery was No 66769 'LMA (League Managers Association). Seen passing Rainhill Station on 4Z62 11.30hrs East Midlands Gateway to Seaforth CT 'liner'. Unfortunately the weather was not kind this particular week, so ended up as my only image of this loco. No 66769 also had another name (##) 'Paul Taylor, Our Inspiration' which I believe is named after GBRF Contract Manager who was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. 6th July 2022.

## Sadly Paul Taylor passed away on 9th August 2022, age 51, still young and missed by many people. R.I.P. ##
