he SICA region is a region of contrasts. Its natural wealth coexists with rural poverty in a little more than 570 thousand square kilometers. On the other hand, the landscape and agricultural activities have a very important weight in the culture and economy.

Rural poverty has multiple, structural and interrelated causes, one of them being the scarce surface and quality of the land on which most small farmers cultivate, which forces them to seek other livelihoods, including informal employment and even migration to cities and the United States. The Dry Corridor clearly expresses this situation.

The Dry Corridor is a territory with its own characteristics and fragilities that make it the focus and destination of many of the public policies and cooperation projects in the SICA countries.

Historically, the agricultural culture of the population has not always been in accordance with its climate and the conservation of natural resources. Practices such as burning agricultural waist, deforestation and uncontrolled irrigation have facilitated the advance of soil erosion and water scarcity. Sustainable management of soil and water resources needs to be favored and strengthened, a matter in which the region's native peoples are key: they suffer the worst rates of poverty and hunger, yet have ancestral rights over 48% of the isthmus' forested area and 37% of its terrestrial protected areas.

The climate is determined by the geographical situation and orography of the SICA countries. The annual rainfall pattern is characterized by a dry season from November to April or May, and a rainy season that lasts the rest of the year.

In the Dry Corridor territories, drought occurs when it does not rain at the time or in the volume that it should, which is an anomaly explained by the El Niño phenomenon, which is intensifying even more due to climate change (FAO, 2020). Based on moderate CO2 emissions scenarios, Central America is one of the regions of the world for which drought is projected to increase (IPCC, 2022) and the heat wave tends to manifest stronger because of climate change (UNESCO, 2018). Projections also predict a greater frequency of extreme events linked to flooding, including a relative rise in sea level.

The regional entities of SICA aim to strengthen national development processes from a regional action, especially in those matters or territories whose challenges and potentialities are common to the countries. This is the case in the Dry Corridor and Arid Zones of the SICA Region.

In this territorial space, the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD) and the Central American Agricultural Council (CAC), among other regional instances, have been working hand in hand with several Partners for Development on relevant initiatives to face the challenges of adaptation and resilience to the climate phenomenon, promoting complementary and synergic solutions within the framework of the Conventions on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Desertification. These are ongoing and scheduled processes to be implemented in the Dry Corridor region, including the AFOLU 2040 Strategy, the Green Climate Fund Dry Corridor Project, the upcoming Dry Corridor Flagship Project under the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, the GEF8 Integrated Critical Forest Biomes Program for Mesoamerica, as well as national projects. In this regard, this side event presents strategies, good practices and lessons learned to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience in the dry corridor.
