The cave at Kumistavi in Imereti is named after Prometheus which many believed thad been chained to the Khvamli Mountain nearby. Some also say that it was mixed up with the Caucasian legend of Amirani, who like Prometheus, angered the gods and was punished and locked inside a huge cave.
The cave was only discovered in 1983, and today tourist has the opportunity to explore about a tenth of the cave, which runs about a kilometer long within the cave complex.

Prometheus is the mythical figure often associated with Humanism because he brought the fire of the gods to earth (giving man his abilities of ingenuity and intelligence). He was punished by being bound to a rock to have vultures eat out his liver, which would regrow to be eaten again each day. Here, I have also included some imagery to suggest fractals and complexity, in which the 'fire of the gods', Heraclitus' Divine Fire, Taoist Qi, and Stuart Kauffman's inherent creative principle of the cosmos are one in the same. In this rebirth Prometheus returns with his chains broken."
