These pumpkins grew just around the road near a simple peasant house. Obviously, this family has several daughters. In accordance with Ukrainian wedding traditions, If the bride's parents meet the bridegroom at the door with a pumpkin, it means that his offer of marriage was not accepted by either the bride or by her family, and the pumpkin is something for him to carry, so that he doesn't leave empty-handed. :)
Think jack-o'-lanterns are frightening? Try being a man in Ukraine. Then you'll truly understand what it's like to fear a pumpkin.
For centuries in the Eastern European nation, a pumpkin meant one thing: "No, I won't marry you".
Many Ukrainian men would only propose at night so they wouldn't be seen with a pumpkin in their hands if rejected.
Even today, Ukrainians may use a pumpkin -- or harbuz in Ukrainian -- in conversation. If you say no thanks to a business deal, you might say, "I just have to hand you a pumpkin on that one". Want to protest the president's visit? Just hold up a pumpkin -- that means you want him to get lost.
Not All Bad News. There is a sweet children's song, it is sung in it: "The pumpkin walks around the vegetable garden, asking its family, 'Are you safe and sound?'. The pumpkin's wife, a yellow melon, says, 'We are all safe and sound!' "...
Sweet old folk tune, yes. But if you're a single guy in Ukraine and your girlfriend starts humming this tune, take the hint.

Not terribly fuzzy like most Orton images...but muted enough to give it a really soft and relaxed feel...at least that's the way I see it. And since I'm never wrong....
In the original the foreground leaves are bright and vivid...and (I felt) kept you from looking through the image...almost a distraction. Upon upload...the shadows became a bit darker than I would have liked...and I don't feel like gong back and doing any adjustments...so tilt your screen to see some more detail in the shadows :-)

Ukraine Wedding Traditions
The Ukrainian Wedding is one of the most symbolic celebrations of Ukraine culture. Traditions and customs for Ukrainian weddings are numerous and have evolved through the ages. National traditions are dominant in Ukrainian wedding ceremonies. Some of them are very old and difficult to explain.
Over time things change, people and their preferences change, lifestyles and of course - one of the most important events in life "marriage" will change as well.
The most important wedding customs and rituals that were honored by our ancestors are still in use. Some customs, such as "matchmaking" and "buying out the bride" are heavily modified in order to adjust to modern couples' abilities. Other wedding rituals, such as the "betrothal"are performed strictly because of the religious connection to the wedding ceremony.

A 2015 Ram Promaster 3500 (high roof/159" wheelbase) cargo van chassis. Ambulance conversion by Malley Industries of Dieppe, New Brunswick. This ambulance (3rd from left) is being delivered to ABC Ambulance in Phoenix, Arizona. ABC, a new startup ambulance service, received its 'certificate of necessity' from the Arizona Dept. of Health Services on May 14, 2015.
