My lockdown music has been re-visiting my Genesis/Floyd collections and catching up on Steve Hackett's ouvre.

As well as the stuff I always listen to - Paul Simon/Ralph McTell/Eagles/etc. etc., also been following Clemency Burton-Hill's 'Year of Wonder' classical music suggestions. So which to choose, really . . .

Celebrating Karl Marx 200 birthday

Château Les Bernardières (or des Bernardières) was built in the 12th century, overlooking a trade route that ran along the Nizonne valley.

It was fortified on a defensive level in the 14th century, during the Hundred Years War, in order to protect itself from the English who claimed Aquitaine.

It was here, in 1377, that Bertrand du Guesclin defeated the English troops.

In the 16th century, Antoine d'Authon, lord of Bernardières, after having sold his castle,

armed a ship in 1518. First privateer, he finished in 1546 as pasha of Algiers and admiral of the Ottoman fleet under the name of Barbarossa II.

Rebuilt in the 17th century, the Château Les Bernardières gradually evolved into a Renaissance-style residence.

This photograph was taken at dawn this morning at Lower Seletar Reservoir looking towards Orchid Country Club and Heritage Bridge (on the right).

This photograph captured the progressively illuminated and drifting clouds in the dawn sky and the Bridge. The mirror-like surface of the reservoir provided an enchanting view of the serene landscape.

This night photograph of Rio de Janeiro was taken from the Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar) during a memorable visit in 2015. It was an amazing sight after sunset when the lights in buildings and along the beaches were progressively lit. The famous crescent shaped Copacabana Beach can be seen on the left, with the cableway leading towards the lower level cable car station.

I liked this frame of the Annapurna lit in the morning light as it shows how from right to left the life sustaining nature of the mountains change. Annapurna has one of the high number of climbing fatalities in the world, however as one comes little further away from it, the green cover is better and also life sustaining. I also love how this image is tricking us to believe that all the mountains in it are of the same height, while in reality, Annapurna towers above them as the 10th highest mountain at 8,091m

Many thanks to Philippe Close, Rudi Vervoort and the other self-proclaimed ''progressive'' woke-green rulers of Brussels who have achieved such a wonderful transformation of the capital of Europe... at the expense of an abysmal budget deficit.

Mons

Nouvelle gare | New station

---------------

Located near the centre of the city of Mons, the station was opened in 1841 by the Belgian State Railways and has been rebuilt three times since then.

The third building, which dated from 1952, was demolished in 2013 to be gradually replaced by a new station, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava; the budget, planned at 37 million euros in 2006, reached 480 million in 2024 (at the end of the construction), i.e. 13 times the initial amount.

In August 2023, the end of the work on the new station (originally planned for early 2015) was announced for February 2024. In May 2024, the construction site "neared its end".

The new station was finally opened on 18 December 2024 and will be inaugurated on 31 January 2025.

Admire this artistic installation around "snowmen facets" from which spring, at night, a multitude of reflections plunging visitors into a surreal atmosphere. These thousands of colorful dots come to dress the beautiful facade of the church but also the whole place (floor, surrounding facades ...).

Different light paintings are gradually linked to discover the place in different colorful atmospheres reminiscent of snow, confetti, the artistic movement of pointillism.

By day and in good weather, the sun can also help to make this installation live by reflecting

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone, especially to those who are single. This day kind of sucks hey ;).

On this day to celebrate love, I would like to share a story about my son Micah who is 6 years old and severely autistic. He has been predominantly non-verbal but is progressively saying more words. Micah said mummy to me for the first time today <3. A greater love I could not have in my life. Cherish the moments and appreciate love in all its forms - there could be no greater gift on Valentine's Day for me.

- It is a completely preserved medieval mining town. The fate of Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) has been closely linked to the exploitation of its abundant resources of silver ore. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the town was the main producer of silver and gold in the Kingdom of Hungary. The town was called “terra banensium” (the land of miners) as early as in 1156. The original Hungarian population was joined by skilled German settlers who started arriving in the 13th century. Selmecbánya/Banská Štiavnica gained the status of a royal town in 1238, as one of the first towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. During the Ottoman Wars, the Turks made concerted efforts to conquer rich mining towns in Upper Hungary. This new threat led Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) to build powerful fortifications, including two castles, in the 16th century. As one of the most important centers of Protestant Reformation in the country, the town belonged to the Protestant "League of Seven Mining Towns". The town was also a foremost center of innovation in mining industry. In 1627, gun powder was used here for the first time in the world in a mine. In 1735, the first mining school in the Kingdom of Hungary was founded here. In the years 1762-1770, the Hofkammer in Vienna, with support from Queen Maria Theresa, transformed the school into the famous Mining Academy, creating the first technical university in the world. In 1919, after the creation of Czechoslovakia, the Academy was moved to Sopron in Hungary. In 1782 Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) was the third biggest town in the Kingdom of Hungary (with 23,192 or incl. suburbs 40,000 inhabitants), after Pozsony (today Bratislava) and Debrecen. But the town’s development was too closely linked to the mining activity which had been progressively declining since the second half of the 19th century.

SSC - Something Old Something New

For Old I have a collection of old 45 singles here featuring Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis and for New my iPhone set to play internet music. I decided to include the journey in between with a selection of CDs here featuring Ray Charles' last Album Genius Loves Company then moving on to my iPod which unfortunately is not functioning correctly at the moment. The title is a nod to the 70s genre of ProgRock.
