New edition, over 1500 pages. Notice it's even thicker than the rhinoceros book.

Our students expanded their knowledge of Python by learning about lists. We started off this morning learning about basic lists but by the afternoon we were making two dimensional lists. They will use what they learned about lists to make a tic-tac-toe game. Our students are very eager to participate which has created an excellent classroom environment.

Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston (July 15, 2014) -- U.S. Army Installation Management Command walks the talk, increasing its investment in employee development through a revitalized, year-long mentorship program, which started here today with 28 mentees paired with their 28 mentors and five senior mentors, from installations around the globe, gathered for IMCOM Headquarters Centralized Mentoring Program orientation.

With volunteered help from community, business and education partners, such as United Services Automotive Association social media team, National Basketball Association’s San Antonio Spurs organizational management team, University of Texas San Antonio career services division and U.S. Army Medical Command partners, the mentor/mentee teams spent time on team building, leadership, organizational development, defining the objectives and desired outcome of the program and general discussion about skills, career goal setting, networking, continued education, customer service and the health/work performance relationship.

Took a day off. Was very tired. Now I'm studying Python (a great programming language) from a book that I recommend a lot: A concise introduction to programming in Python by Mak J Johnson. Look what you can do with Python - and easily! I modified a book listing - it's very easy and very short.

The fall season of company athletics ended with the brigade championship in Functional Fitness Nov. 19 at Daly Field. Bolstered by a large contingent of supporters, the cadets from Company G-4 quickly dominated the field with the fastest team in the two-event competition. The Co. I-1 team placed second. This was the first semester in which the Department of Physical Fitness added functional fitness to its company athletics program. Photo by Mike Strasser/USMA PAO

The California Sea Lion is a coastal sea lion of the northern Pacific Ocean. Males grow to 300 kg (600 lb) and 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while females are significantly smaller, to 100 kg (200 lb) and 2 m (6.5 ft) long.

The California sea lion has a streamlined body that contains a layer of blubber under the skin to provide warmth and buoyancy. Their large eyes help them adjust to low levels of light in underwater environments, while their whiskers augment their sense of touch. Their nostrils automatically close once they hit the water. Their long front flippers rotate outward for better movement on land, and propel them forward in water, where they are most at home. Males grow a large crest of bone on the top of their heads as they reach sexual maturity, and it is this that gives the animal its generic name (loph is "forehead" and za- is an emphatic; Zalophus californianus means "Californian big-head").

California sea lions feed on a wide-variety of seafood including fish, shellfish, and squid. They are highly sociable and gather in large numbers on beaches and coasts, though they are also often associated with marinas and wharves, and may even be seen on navigational buoys.

This species usually breeds around May to June and females have a 12-month gestation period. The pup is usually born from June to August, and the mother may give birth on land or in water.

California sea lions are intelligent and adaptable, and are often trained as entertainers at ocean parks and zoos as well as by researchers studying interspecies cooperation in the marine environment. They are also used in military applications as sentries, and for equipment recovery, by the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program.

There are three subspecies, sometimes considered full species in their own right: Zalophus californianus californianus is the nominate race, found primarily along the Pacific coast of North America. The others are the Galapagos Sea Lion (Z. c. wollebaeki), and the Japanese Sea Lion (Z. c. japonicus) which is now believed to be extinct.

California sea lions are the only mammals whose milk does not contain lactose.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.

hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

On our way back up-river after a month of surveys in the jungle, we encourage our boat driver to cut up behind the biggest bono of the year (a local name for this massive tidal bore on the Kampar river, Sumatra, Indonesia)....

...We had wanted to try this for a long time, and when we heard that the tides were perfect for the biggest bono of the year, we made sure we had a boat with good engine and competent driver...

Perched right up on the crest, we estimate that we're about 4 metres higher than the water-level of the river up front. Left and right on the distant banks of the Kampar, we can see logs and trees being tossed-up into the air as the wave rips along.

We spend an enjoyable but tense hour sitting on top of the crest, as it travels slowly up the Kampar, marvelling at nature's awesome power.

A closer look - right on the crest...
