More than 200 high school students from 12 teams competed in the Maryland National Guard annual Joint Service Junior ROTC Field Meet on April 13, at Gunpowder Military Reservation in Glen Arm, Md.
Century High School, home of the Knights in Sykesville, Md., won the over all competition in ten different events that tests the students level of physical fitness and ability to work together and leadership.
“We placed second two years in a row, this year we were determined to win,” said Cadet Capt. Michael Donellan from Sykesville, Md. “It was a great meet, it was well organized and a lot of fun. This year we won six individual events.”
The schools were from all across the state representing all branches of service and their Junior ROTC programs, including the Freestate Challenge Academy. Each team consisted of 20 students, but only eight could compete at one time and at minimum of two of the students had to be females. The events consisted of a physical fitness test, first aide, rope bridge, egg toss, tire flip, leadership reaction course, tug of war, Humvee pull, issy dizzy and an obstacle course.
“This is a fun way for the students to come together, compete and develop their leadership and communication skills,” said Lt. Col. (ret.) Bruce Kale, event coordinator and retired member of the Maryland National Guard. “These are good kids and they come from all different backgrounds with one goal: to be the best that they can be.”
Winters Mill is the only other high school in Carroll County to offer Junior ROTC and they competed in the meet. Century High School received approval from the U.S. Army and the Carroll County Board of Education to offer Junior ROTC in 2005.

I was inspired by the logo for the Milwaukee Bicycle Co. to create a new logo for the Bike Program.
It's not official or anything. I was just having fun playing around in Illustrator (and AutoCAD for the technical elements).
Of course, for those not familiar with the city, it's heavily based on the municipal flag of Chicago.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.
For more information on hackNY's initiatives, please visit www.hackNY.org and follow us on twitter @hackNY

This is the first of four version of our program/bulletin for our upcoming series, "The Gospel According To. . . " Each week's message will feature a different persona and how he or she lived out the gospel. We had artists who go to our church paint portraits of each of the people. So, each program will feature the painting with this same graphic/person's name underneath. I'm only posting this one for now because I'm waiting on the other paintings to be finished. The project needs to go to press in a week, and I'd welcome any feedback!
