After trying to find a cheap flash with less cheap options on ebay for the last few weeks I wandered into Jessops today to see if, randomly, they had any grey cards. They did, but I forgot about them when I saw they had some of the flashes that I'd thought were discontinued and did what I wanted (TTL, P-TTL, swivel/tilt and with an AF assist light). After turning down the Minolta version that the guy behind the counter was at first very sure was universal I ended up with a Pentax one. Here is test shot number 9 (of 9) straight out of the camera (apart from a resize) - it seems to work rather well, with pretty much perfect exposures every time. Best £22 I've spent in a while, especially as they were going for more than that on ebay...

I ordered a couple of AVR microcontrollers to play with, and while I'm waiting for them to arrive, I built an in-system programmer cable of the simplest type--the passive parallel-port-bit-banger. It was more of a hassle than I thought it'd be--maybe I should have just ordered one of these.
Sophie Cooke and Kirsten Tranter in conversation with Roland Gulliver (programmer at Edinburgh International Book Festival): Edinburgh Central Library on Thursday 20 January 2011.
Sophie (The Glass House, Under the Mountain) described her attachment to the characters in her books and how conjecture starts plots spinning in various directions, in some cases well away from the truth of the situation.
Kirsten's first book, the Legacy, also features a complex group of characters, surrounding a world changing event and how each is moved by it.

How to make almost anything
Pete talked about open source fabbers, 3d fabrication, 3D printers and materials to rapidly prototype stuff. An exciting idea because with the right type of materials and blueprints you can reproduce complex products that could not easly by reproduced. Three dimensional objects can be recreated from digital designs by a photocopy like process where layers of material are deposited until the entire object is created.
There are numerous examples you can look at including, The Mad Evil Scientist, Candy Fab 4000 (uses sugar instead of plastics), Fab@Home and RepRap which Pete referred to in his talk (I think). You can buy commercial tools but with the advent of Open Source movement projects such as RepRap allow you to build a usable fabrication tool for 1/5 the price.
RepRap is to 3 dimensional fabrication what the first Apple Laser printer was to publishing.
