Title page from the theatre programme for a production of "Haddon Hall" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1914. This was the very first staged show from the newly-formed Amateurs, created following the collapse of two previous societies in the town.

Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Haddon Hall" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights from Monday 2nd February to Saturday 7th February 1914. The comic opera was written by Sydney Grundy with music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. The KAODS production was produced by W. G. Bedford, with musical director Herbert B. Summerscales. The President of the society was the Mayor of Keighley, William Anderton Brigg, who, according to the Keighley News, had been instrumental in the formation of the new society following the demise of the previous organisations.

In the real world, Haddon Hall is a stately home in the Peak District, belonging throughout its 900 year history to descendants of the same family. The opera tells a very loose, and time-displaced, account of how the impressive seat switched, through marriage, from the Vernon family to the Manners family. The story is set at Haddon Hall towards the end of the Interregnum, the period in the seventeenth century when England was under various forms of republican government, before the restoration of the crown. Dorothy Vernon (played by Miranda Sugden), daughter of Sir George Vernon (Harry Shackleton), is due to marry her father's cousin Rupert Vernon (John Pickles), but Dorothy is in love with John Manners (Tom Graham) - a romance not approved of by her father. So one dark and stormy night, Dorothy and John elope. When they eventually return, Rupert Vernon is master of the Hall, but John overthrows him, restoring Sir George which thus gains his blessing on Dorothy and John's relationship.

The show also starred Kenneth I. Aspinall, Annie Battle, Ethel Bird, Dorothy Bottomley, Hettie Butterfield, Fred Carr, Teddy Feather, George Fieldhouse, Algernon Gill, Marion Holmes, Arthur G. Ramsden, Frank Shuttleworth and Marion Smith.

A review of the opening night appeared in the Keighley News of Saturday 7th February 1914: "The society, as at present constituted, made its debut at the Hippodrome on Monday in 'Haddon Hall', by Sydney Grundy and Sir Arthur Sullivan. The piece has hardly the brightness and the scintillating wit of the works in which the famous composer was associated with Sir W. S. Gilbert; but it contains a great deal of musical charm and much attractive harmony, and the plot is centred round a love story that is by this time almost classic... The first performance after a long interval is almost of necessity bound to contain faults and defects that for the remainder of the week may be entirely missing... It would be easy and quite true to say, for instance, that in many cases on Monday night the acting was too listless or too wooden to convince anybody, that the male voices of the chorus were without confidence, and that the singing of some of the principals failed to carry conviction... but as the singers entered more thoroughly into their share of the work the effect was decidedly improved, and the concerted items of the last act were rendered with both talent and spirit."

The 44-page programme, compiled by society secretary Thomas Ireland Bottomley, was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of Queen Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 253mm by 190mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.
