NEWPORT, R.I. – International students assigned to the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) are greeted by NWC President Rear Adm. Pete Garvin during a welcome ceremony August 14, 2023. Students from the Naval Command College and Naval Staff College along with their families and sponsors, were welcomed by NWC faculty and staff as they begin their 11-month residential programs in Newport. The programs are designed to build trust, confidence, and cooperation between American and international officers while building enduring friendships and partnerships amongst students and their families. Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to anticipate and prepare strategically for the future, strengthen the foundations of peace, and create a decisive warfighting advantage. With three chutes, spotting a capsule returning to the surface from a greater distance is easier for recovery crews but also serves to add redundancy - in the event of one failing the capsule will have a rough but still survivable landing. Here it is being tested coming back from only 16km after being carried up by a balloon
