Mitchell-Yancey Healthy Families

Mitchell Yancey Healthy Families is a program of the Toe River Health District and partners with the Mitchell Yancey Partnership for Children. The Mitchell Yancey Partnership for Children provides everything from a children’s resource library to subsidized child care and child care quality assurance services.

MYHF is an intensive home visiting program meant to identify and assist overburdened families. Overburdened may mean little or no income, domestic violence issues, substance abuse and evidence of child abuse.

The primary mission of the Mitchell-Yancey Healthy Families Program (MYHF) is to prevent child abuse. The organization serves families from time of pregnancy until the child has reached age five. “Working with and providing services to families when the child is this young reduces the risk of maltreatment to the child,” says MYHF’s program director, Nickey Reato-Stamey.

Since it began in May 2012, MYHF has enrolled 23 families. An MYHF Family Support Worker can spend anywhere from 90 minutes to 5 hours per week in the home or working on each family’s needs and Nickey reports that there have been noticeable improvements already. For example, MYHF families have already seen a 20 percent increase in income and there has been a 20 percent decrease in smoking among the pregnant women MYHF is assisting.

Crisis intervention is part of MYHF’service goals, but parenting education is essential. The main goal is for these parents “to parent differently than they were parented,” says Nickey. “So, if they know child abuse and neglect, we want to teach them … there’s a different way.” One way to make a change: Get outside and get active.

That’s why Nickey applied to receive a one by one® grant of pedometers from 4imprint®. “We know that getting outside and having some sort of exercise can be beneficial,” remarks Nickey. “Pedometers are what we got and we want to use those as a way to improve [maternal] health.” The idea behind it is to promote health by helping parents be good role models. When moms are walking outside, they’re also setting an example so that “children know it’s important, too.”

When Nickey received news that MYHF would be receiving the pedometers, she and her team “were tickled pink.” Theirs is a new program, but they felt that 4imprint really appreciated the child abuse prevention cause. “Wouldn’t it be exciting,” Nickey thought, “for 4imprint to say that they put their imprint on preventing child abuse?”

Indeed it is.

This is a Pratt St NSP property in Omaga, NE during construction. The City of Omaha is a recipient of NSP funds from the State of Nebraska’s $19.6 million allocation. This property was a foreclosed and vacant property that was purchased by the City of Omaha. The City of Omaha demolished the property with NSP funds and is partnering with Omaha Habitat for Humanity to construct a new home, which is designed to fit in well with the site and surroundings. Once the property is complete it will be sold to a household who is at or below 50% of the area median income.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.

hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

Name of Program: Housing reconstruction program after Gorkha Earthquake

Location: Gosaikunda Rural Municipality-4, Rasuwa-Nepal

In stone in cement buildings, cement mortar is used to bind the stones together. Buildings that are more than 15-20 years old are mostly this type in hilly and mountainous region of Nepal.

The wall thickness of building is reduced from the thickness used in stone in mud buildings; it is usually 350-450mm thick. The numbers of stories are 2 to 3. The floors are of either reinforced concrete or reinforced brick slabs or may be flexible type. The roof is also of similar construction although in some cases it is made sloping using RC slabs. Usually the slabs rest directly on walls without beams. A peripheral beam at plinth and roof can be found in some buildings. Stone in cement building is stronger than stone in mud, but still vulnerable to earthquake due to lack of earthquake resisting elements such as through stones, bands and vertical reinforcement.

Nepal suffered a massive loss of lives and property on Saturday 25 April 2015, when the devastating magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Nepal. Subsequent aftershocks, including one of magnitude 7.3 near the Chinese border on 12 May, produced additional losses of life and property.

The earthquake triggered avalanches on Mount Everest and in the Langtang valley. Villages were flattened and people were made homeless across 31 districts, with 14 districts suffering the highest impact. Infrastructure was damaged throughout the earthquake zone. Historic neighborhoods and heritage sites were destroyed in the Kathmandu Valley.

As a result of the earthquake, 8,790 people died and more than 22,300 people were injured. Assessments showed that at least 498,852 private houses and 2,656 government buildings were destroyed. Another 256,697 private houses and 3,622 government buildings were partially damaged. In addition, 19,000 classrooms were destroyed and 11,000 damaged.

The earthquake affected manufacturing, production, and trade in agriculture as well as tourism and other areas of the service sector, thereby weakening the national economy. Economic growth fell in 2015 and has picked up slowly 2016. Once fully underway, reconstruction should contribute to economic growth in the coming years.

According to initial estimates arrived at during the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), NPR 669 billion would be required to reconstruct damaged properties and infrastructure and to support recovery in affected sectors of the economy.

The government was providing 300 hundred thousand grant for Private housing reconstruction & 100 hundred thousand grant for retrofitting of the private house damaged by earthquake
