Volunteer Shelby Knapper in Peru Cusco Child Care program 4 weeks www.abroaderview.org
1- How was the local ABV Coordinator/staff and the support provided in-country?
Beatriz was awesome. She was there to help with anything I needed, and offered support for the duration of my trip. She showed me around Cusco, helped plan weekend trips, and introduced me to my family, program, and to other volunteers.
2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced? Name 2
Program: The kindergarten was very well equipped and staffed.
Host Family: My family ate very big lunches, and the dinner was very light, which was an adjustment.
Country: The weather can change from frizzing to hot within minutes.
3- What was the most challenging thing you experienced?
Program: Sometimes being left alone with the whole class of three-year old-kids.
Host Family: Trying to finish the huge lunch they’d give me!
Country: Constantly being approached in the street by people trying to sell stuff.
4- Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
1. Warm clothing for nighttime.
2. Extra toilet paper (lots of public bathrooms not have it)
3. Good shoes for walking and hiking.
4. Bug spray for Machupicchu
5.1-Other things volunteers should know before coming here: (that’s not in the orientation guide)
a. Come with an open mind.
b. Cusco is full of things to do, so be proactive.
c. You may want to buy your own extra food to supplement.
d. Make use of your weekends with trips.
6- Personal Paragraph about the experience:
I had a good experience with A Broader View. I love that I could combine travel with volunteering. I got to see many sights and had a rewarding experience volunteering.
7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security, friendliness, quality others:
My host family was so welcoming and accommodating. I’m vegetarian, and my host mom would even make special tofu for me. I felt very at home.
8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
Program: Bonding with the kids and teachers at the school.
Host Family: Watching soccer together and talking together during meals.
Country: All of the things I got to see in Cusco and Machupicchu.

They were so helpful, and always responded to calls and emails superb fast.

It worked well with me.
9.2- Who did you find Abroaderview website

This is a Pratt St NSP property in Omaga, NE during construction. The City of Omaha is a recipient of NSP funds from the State of Nebraska’s $19.6 million allocation. This property was a foreclosed and vacant property that was purchased by the City of Omaha. The City of Omaha demolished the property with NSP funds and is partnering with Omaha Habitat for Humanity to construct a new home, which is designed to fit in well with the site and surroundings. Once the property is complete it will be sold to a household who is at or below 50% of the area median income.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

Susan Ladenburger in India 🇮🇳 Jaipur at the Orphanage Program. I have worked with children in my practice as a dental hygienist and in school settings as a teaching assistant for special needs children. I found the work to be personally rewarding and life changing. I hope that by volunteering I can provide the children with a sense of being loved and cared for.

I finally have a desk at home where I can sit & program away on my brandy-new FiOS Internet line. While nice in some ways, it was wearing a bit thin to have to go to Panera every time I wanted to do some work. :)
And yes, those are my Basics in the background. Nice to be able to finally unpack those as well!

Name of Program: Housing reconstruction program after Gorkha Earthquake
Location: Gosaikunda Rural Municipality-4, Rasuwa-Nepal
In stone in cement buildings, cement mortar is used to bind the stones together. Buildings that are more than 15-20 years old are mostly this type in hilly and mountainous region of Nepal.
The wall thickness of building is reduced from the thickness used in stone in mud buildings; it is usually 350-450mm thick. The numbers of stories are 2 to 3. The floors are of either reinforced concrete or reinforced brick slabs or may be flexible type. The roof is also of similar construction although in some cases it is made sloping using RC slabs. Usually the slabs rest directly on walls without beams. A peripheral beam at plinth and roof can be found in some buildings. Stone in cement building is stronger than stone in mud, but still vulnerable to earthquake due to lack of earthquake resisting elements such as through stones, bands and vertical reinforcement.
Nepal suffered a massive loss of lives and property on Saturday 25 April 2015, when the devastating magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Nepal. Subsequent aftershocks, including one of magnitude 7.3 near the Chinese border on 12 May, produced additional losses of life and property.
The earthquake triggered avalanches on Mount Everest and in the Langtang valley. Villages were flattened and people were made homeless across 31 districts, with 14 districts suffering the highest impact. Infrastructure was damaged throughout the earthquake zone. Historic neighborhoods and heritage sites were destroyed in the Kathmandu Valley.
As a result of the earthquake, 8,790 people died and more than 22,300 people were injured. Assessments showed that at least 498,852 private houses and 2,656 government buildings were destroyed. Another 256,697 private houses and 3,622 government buildings were partially damaged. In addition, 19,000 classrooms were destroyed and 11,000 damaged.
The earthquake affected manufacturing, production, and trade in agriculture as well as tourism and other areas of the service sector, thereby weakening the national economy. Economic growth fell in 2015 and has picked up slowly 2016. Once fully underway, reconstruction should contribute to economic growth in the coming years.
According to initial estimates arrived at during the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), NPR 669 billion would be required to reconstruct damaged properties and infrastructure and to support recovery in affected sectors of the economy.
The government was providing 300 hundred thousand grant for Private housing reconstruction & 100 hundred thousand grant for retrofitting of the private house damaged by earthquake
