In 2011 the Norfolk Southern brought back their steam program, under the name 21st Century Steam, leading to speculation among some about a possible restoration of 611. On February 22nd 2013, the Virginia Museum of Transportation announced that they were forming a committee to conduct a feasibility study with the goal of returning the 611 to active service. The committee is known as "Fire Up 611."[4]
On 23 May 2015, #611 sits on the turntable at the North Carolina Transportation Museum, between back-and-forth runs around the facility.

On June 28th, 2013, the "Fire Up 611" committee announced that 611 would be restored to operating condition in time for Norfolk Southern's 2014 steam excursion season, if $5 million was raised by October 31st, 2013 .[5] If the money was raised, 611 would be restored at the North Carolina Transportation Museum roundhouse in Spencer, NC. The sum of $5 million was sought, comprising: $1 million for locomotive restoration, $2 million for a dedicated maintenance shop in Roanoke, and the balance for an endowment and other items. Restoration requirements included repairs of the engine truck, the preparation of a tool car and an auxiliary water tender, application of new safety appliances such as in-cab signals and an event recorder, installation of new flues, boiler work, hydro and fire testing, test runs and inspection and repairs of the tender, running gears and air brakes. However, the hoped for amount was not reached, and the locomotive was to remain at the Virginia Museum of Transportation until the $3.5 million goal was reached.
On November 22nd, 2013, Norfolk Southern announced that they were donating $1.5 million of the proceeds from an auction of a Mark Rothko painting to the Fire Up 611! campaign.[6] In February of 2014, several key appointments were made by the Fire Up 611 committee to the locomotive's mechanical team, and the following month, a formal agreement was made with the North Carolina Transportation Museum for restoration. On April 1st, 2014, it was announced that after raising $2.3 million, the locomotive would move to North Carolina on May 24th, 2014. 611 arrived in Spencer on May 25th and took part in the Streamliners at Spencer event the following weekend. Restoration work on the 611 began on June 2nd, 2014. Restoration was done with the help of volunteers, including several from the Age of Steam Roundhouse. Due to the generally good condition of the locomotive, restoration was complete within a year.
On March 31st, 2015, 611 was fired up for the first time in over 20 years for a test fire, and on May 9th, it ran under its own power as part of the first round of post-restoration testing and it was also the day when N&W 2-8-8-2 Y6a 2156 left the St. Louis Museum of Transportation[7] for Roanoke to welcome back the 611.[8] On May 21, 2015, 611 made a brief test run from Spencer to Greensboro, N.C., pulling the "Powhatan Arrow" passenger cars. On May 30, 2015, 611 pulled its first excursion from Spencer, North Carolina to Roanoke, Virginia.[9]
The locomotive is scheduled to run several excursions during the summer of 2015.[10]
The first set of these excursions (3 trips) operated by the Virginia Museum of Transportation, Fire Up 611, and in coordination with Norfolk Southern, was hosted on the former Southern Railway B-Line (East/West) from Manassas, Virginia B0.0 to Riverton Junction B50.9 (Front Royal, Virginia) on June 6th and 7th, 2015. This included a climb up the Linden grade, a grade over 1% for more than 3 miles in either direction.
The second set of excursion (2 trips) are scheduled for June 13th and 14th, 2015 from Lynchburg, Virginia to Petersburg, Virginia. This is a 260 mile round-trip on the former Norfolk & Western main line historically served by the Class J locomotive.
The third set of excursions and last announced for 2015 are scheduled for July 3rd through 5th. This event includes 3 morning trips from Roanoke, Virginia to Lynchburg, Virginia over the historic Norfolk and Western Blue Ridge grade. Also offered are 3 afternoon trips from Roanoke, Virginia to Radford, Virginia which will traverse both the Montgomery tunnel and the Christiansburg grade. Both follow former Norfolk and Western mainlines that were historically served by the Class J locomotives
This project is part of the Transformation Projects at the Ars Electronica Kepler's Garden at the JUK. The Fulldome Program of the Digital Arts Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna presents experimental immersive works in collaboration with the University’s Science Visualization Lab, Trans-Media Academie Hellerau, and the transdisciplinary performance company, kondition pluriel. Future Room and Liminal Spaces (re-edited) reveal the artistic potential of the fulldome, as does the 360˚ screening of works by researchers, teachers, and students.

A rare & candid photograph of Virgil “Gus” Grissom, in an unidentified Apollo Command Module mockup. I’m almost certain this photograph was taken during his July 10, 1962 visit to North American Aviation (NAA) Space & Information Systems Division in Downey, CA. Grissom, accompanied by Robert R. Gilruth, Director, MSC and Charles W. Frick, Apollo Program Manager, MSC, were at NAA to conduct the first Apollo spacecraft mockup review/inspection.
If so, and if the following is also correct, the tragic irony is heartbreaking to this day.
An interesting & informative extract from a discussion at “The Space Review” website, by user “oldengg”. While not authoritative, he/she is refreshingly articulate & seemingly very knowledgeable:
“ Sure, NAA had a lot of explaining to do regarding the inferior workmanship and the flammable clutter in the AS-204 CM. But there's a lot of history that needs to be understood to make sense of what happened that day.
In the 1961 Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) Request for Proposal, NASA baselined an oxygen/nitrogen cabin atmosphere and North American Aviation (NAA) had complied with that requirement in its CSM proposal to NASA. NASA awarded the CSM contract to NAA on that basis and later directed NAA to use a 100% oxygen atmosphere.
In the early CSM preliminary design period, NAA had proposed a single, outward-opening explosive hatch for the Command Module (CM) main entry, one similar to the Mercury hatch design. Again NASA changed the design and directed NAA to develop the inward-opening, dual-hatch system that was used on AS-204.
From Lee Atwood's viewpoint, NAA had done as its customer, NASA, had directed and was now, during his congressional testimony, was being pilloried unfairly for NASA engineering decisions over which NAA had no control. Ironically, AS-204 Commander Gus Grissom was present when the NAA hatch design was discussed at the 10 July 1962 CM mockup review at NAA's Downey plant. Grissom agreed with the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center, Houston) engineers that the NAA single-piece, outwardly-opening, explosive hatch design should be changed to the presumably safer, inward-opening, dual-hatch configuration. Liberty Bell 7 hangs over AS-204 like a spectre.
And as far as the messy condition of the AS-204 CM, that was clearly NASA's responsibility because NASA had formally taken delivery of that vehicle from NAA in 1966. Many people who were not employed by NAA were involved in preparing the spacecraft for that ill-fated test. NAA had no control over those people or over any flammable material that they might have left in the spacecraft.”

Female Adult Literacy program was initiated in 2016. At present PEP is running 26 Female Adult Literacy (FAL) Centers with 316 Female Adult Literacy members (Adult Students) in different areas of rural Sindh as follows,

There are 6 area officers and 1 WEP coordinator for the implementing and monitoring of the adult literacy program.
As a gesture of appreciation Pervaiz Lodhie President and founder LEDtronics Inc. offered a special gift of a Solar Powered LED Solar Light to the 316 student and 7 program officers.
Funding for the solar lights was provided by one of gentleman from USA. His name is not mentioned here on his advice.
First distribution ceremony was held on Thursday October 12, 2017 in Shaleemabad, Achaar Khaskeli & Shanti Nagar ALCs located in Tando Allahyar districts.
Lt. Gen (Retd.) Syed Perwaiz Shahid a renowned educationist was chief guest for the event.
Ms. Lillian Charles Program Manager PEP and other team members from PEP were present in the event.
During the ceremony 72 female students received solar lanterns. PEP will organize another event in Hyderabad for the distribution of remaining solar lights in November 2017.
Hope you are well , I am fine too. We are thankful for all your support through lights that you have provided to Women who are part of Adult literacy classes. As I have received a call from Mr Shahid i am sharing the following information with you.
Women Empowerment groups were started in 2013 in all the PEP schools. The ideas was to provide awareness to women regarding their rights, responsibilities, savings, and issues such as early marriage. These women were provided training on building low cost washroom and they were also provided training on how to save their families during severe floods. At present PEP has 67 groups in total. Each group has a group of 10 females.
In 2016 , on the request of women, adult literacy course is introduced to the women. Project aimed at 5 centres in 2016 but 27 centre were started in 2016. they women were provide free books and no fee was charged from them. A mobilizer from the same village taught these classes.. They course is designed for one year as it is a weekly class.
In 2017 , PEP introduced a centre where women can learn from android tablets. PEP has designed three grade applications in Sindhi on tablets which are useful for these women. They can use those applications and hear sounds and can read the sentences and stories.
Now women are able to read and write sentences. Instead of thumb print they can write their names. They developed their confidence and able to perform theater on sensitive issues. Some of the theatre performances are uploaded on PEP website.
PEP is reaching out to the marginalized communities with a hope of educating them and making them effective citizen of our country.
PEP requested you to distribute these light as a token of thanks and as a resource for them so they can use it in the night too. They are thankful for all the encouragement that you have provided to them.

Young people learn life skills through DARE program

LANDSTUHL, Germany – Juggling red balloons symbolized life’s many challenges during graduation for a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program held recently at Wilson Barracks.
Fifth graders were helping Lt. Col. Lars Zetterstrom, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, juggle several red balloons. A blue balloon was tossed in, representing drugs and alcohol, to show the difficulty of keeping life’s balloons aloft with an added impairment.
Spontaneously, Zetterstrom tapped the blue balloon to the floor and popped it with his desert-colored combat boot.
“I saw that it represented something bad,” Zetterstrom said. “Stomping it out was the right thing to do.”
Lessons like that are what the DARE program is about. Since 1983, DARE has taught millions of students worldwide about the effects of alcohol and drugs. Each April, "National DARE Day" is commemorated in the United States by a presidential proclamation, community events and activities.
In Kaiserslautern Military Community's fours elementary schools, students complete 10 lessons over several weeks, working from DARE planners.
Weekly lessons often include acting out skits on peer pressure and watching videos about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Landstuhl’s graduating class was the first for Army Sgt. Raymond Engstrom, 29, of Cottage Grove, Minn., a garrison military police officer. The thought of facing children in classrooms each week was daunting at first. Yet, Engstrom knew the importance of DARE discussions and began enjoying the classes.
“You learn to have fun with it,” Engstrom said. “They’re just young people. I always refrain from calling them kids or students. I’d say “people about your age.”
Over the past few months, Engstrom has developed significantly, said his supervisor, Sgt. 1st Class Adrian Rouse, the provost marshal operations sergeant.
“He’s ran with it,” Rouse said. “Now he’s very interactive with the kids, parents and school staff. And I think he enjoys it significantly.”
During the graduation, held at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Heaton Auditorium, Zetterstrom said he was proud to see Army noncommissioned offer leading the DARE program
“We’re American living overseas. We want our children to have the best education possible,” Zetterstrom said. “Learning is not always about academics, it’s about life skills and that’s what DARE does.”
DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Marietta, Ga., July 15, 2015 - Teen volunteer Victoria Socia helps her sister and another camper during an origami workshop at "Camp Guard Youth 2015".
The week-long camp brought 31 children together to encourage physical activity, making healthy choices, and foster peer interactions.
"Camp Guard Youth" is a yearly health and wellness program open to dependents of Georgia National Guard, Air Force Reserve and Dept. of Defense employees.

When we started the program nearly a decade ago, we had no idea the demand would continue – much less grow! More and more educational and arts organizations are adding a film component to their photography courses, and the FPP is here for them. so i finally got my first roll if film back from jasmine & my little frolic, and oh. my. goodness. it's quite possible that i love, love, love almost every single image, and i still have another roll that i have yet to see! i can't believe how gorgeous almost every image is, and that is a big deal to me, seeing as i went from possibly a 20-25% of images i love per roll, to a 75% of images i love per roll.
there is just something about film that feels way more tangible than digital. each image feels more precious. & the medium certainly loves jasmine's gorgeous face. ;)
(not to mention that i didn't have to do ANY computer work! no staring at my computer screen for hours on end to get this *look*! hallelujah!)
oh, you bet more are coming.
