I run a large educational program for children on Saturday mornings, which requires many volunteers to coordinate. I have had a very difficult time finding a person to oversee the parking area where students arrive and leave. It's difficult to find someone to stand out in the cold and put up with the impatience of parents who are dropping off and picking up their children. Recently, on a particularly busy and stressful day, Juan Carlos showed up out of the blue and volunteered to manage the parking lot, promising to enlist the help of others as well.
As I look at Juan Carlos' face, I see his goodness and good nature. His arrival and willingness to lend a hand were most welcome and are a sign of the kind of person he is.
Thanks to all the good folks who volunteer to help their communities in any capacity and ask so little in return.

Brighter Bites is a collaborative effort designed to improve access to healthy, affordable food and provide nutrition education. The University of Texas School of Public Health, KIPP Schools, the Houston Food Bank and Texas Children's Hospital have partnered to offer the 16-week program to third-grade children enrolled at KIPP Explore Academy and their parents. As you can see from the photos, those healthy kale smoothies are a hit!
