Due to SO little Hasbro product hitting stores, COVID-19 has had a profound effect on my lightsaber hilt collection. This beauty was made by my dear friend Mike at Sentry Sabers. Nobody’s prequel era sabers come close in quality and accuracy. 🍻

Some of the profound ancient wisdom for meditation.

It's great if you understand it with your mind.

But it's much more powerful if you feel it in your soul, even if you could not explain the meaning intelectually.

Then you understand it on a much deeper level.

And then its true magic reveals itself.

A profound lack of familiarity with the concept of mercy.

Here we have one of Santa Elena's most profound geologic mysteries—one that cries out for 923-page PhD thesis that will win some aspiring scholar the right to do his or her post-doc at the local Burger King. Don't look at me. I'm too old and having too much fun to waste my time on that.

However, I am willing to share the following field data and hypotheses with any grad student who desperately needs some arcane and meaningless research topic to latch onto.

So here are the facts. Having been detached from one of the canyon walls, this slump block of Cretaceous limestone has come to rest in the bed of the Rio Grande. Seven decades of keen-eyed observational experience tells me that the Earth's gravitational field must have played a key role in this. No thesis material there.

Fortunately, I've also determined that this rock has acquired an strikingly glossy upper surface with a reflectivity quotient close to that of polished marble (see photo above). When I first saw this in person, I experienced a sort of intellectual breakthrough or epiphany. In a flash of unbridled inspiration I correlated this enigmatic feature, so uncharacteristic of the local carbonate rock, with other episodes of my unfunded field work. These were my 1973 and 1976 geophotographic expeditions to study the similarly shiny bedrock surface of the Crest Limestone, also Cretaceous, exposed on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece.

As specialists in the stratigraphy of the Attic-Cycladic Massif have noted, the Crest Limestone on the Acropolis got its shine (not to mention its treacherous slipperiness after a rain) from the wear of untold thousands of feet. Many of these were attached to human visitors who've walked on that natural stone flooring to get a closer look at the Parthenon.

I call this form of erosional activity pedigenic abrasion. Note my fabrication of a new and utterly unnecessary Latin-root term that substitutes for such perfectly good vernacular equivalents as foot polishing and foot wear by footwear. This makes me feel learned, academic, entitled, and priestly.

While there are no masterpieces of ancient Greek architecture in Santa Elena Canyon, nature has produced something else that is just as magnificent, and a lot of turistas come here, too. In fact, I've observed many of then perching on this rock to enjoy the incomparable view.

But the problem is that in this location the human beings do not so much walk on this rock as sit on it. This makes me think we're witnessing a somewhat different process at work: natigenic rather than pedigenic abrasion (natis, Latin = buttocks, English).

The good news is that both of these processes share a common origin, and in fact constitute subcategories of the umbrella concept of touristogenic abrasion.

Well, it's great that we've been able to create some more scientific terminology.

I tell you what: to take a gander at the other photos and descriptions in this series, y'all mosey on down to my my Exploring Santa Elena Canyon album.

And if you'd like to see what the devil I'm talking about with regard to the Acropolis and the Crest Limestone, visit this other Flickr post of mine.

"It's profound for a question, I'd have to say 'Take care of yourself and take care of the Planet !' She answered my question about her message to the world.

'Be good to yourself, don't worry too much', I'd say to the younger me," she answered my second question.

Pilar is Spanish, 'half Galician and half Catalan', living in Finland for the past eight years. She's Head of Unit in the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki.

Pilar is actually a MD PhD in Hepatology, although she gave up her career in medicine for the benefit of the European Commission which she had joined some nine years ago.

Pilar loves Helsinki and her life here and I loved her genuine, positive attitude.

It was thanks to a ray of light, it shone on her as she was walking in my direction, which made me approach her for a portrait.

It was easy to make photos of Pilar. I liked her 'philosophical poet' look.

Pilar likes travelling and reading. She speaks some French and Italian, and naturally, Spanish and English.

When I showed her the photos she said she was flattered, which made me happy, as she usually didn't like photos of herself, she explained.

The authority at the left is profoundly agitated - so much so that he has become all mouth. The three "recruits" at the right stand petrified. There also appears to be a tall, gaunt figure, between authority and recruits, who is eyeballing Mr. Authority with great alarm. Basic training, anyone? Or perhaps just a meaningful exchange of views between asymmetrically positioned players in the social order?

Rev Austen: If a woman happens to have a particular superiority, for example, a profound mind, it is best kept a profound secret. Humour is liked more, but wit?

No. It is the most treacherous talent of them all.

A woman especially if she has the misfortune of knowing anything, should conceal it as well as she can

TWO of a quite challenging selection of quotes; they stem in the original of Jane Austen offerings, BUT they are known to me by an altogether different event..... I was watching the film Becoming Jane (Austen) and I have found so many truly memorable quotes which made me wonder, laugh out loud, sit up, marvel.... This film is one you could watch again and again and I thought it might be worthwhile to let you participate..... Now, of course, I cannot judge your reactions, and furthermore my knowledge of Jane Austen is at best very patchy (I am Swiss don't forget!) but anyway - here we go..... When I looked at this beautiful young woman mirrored behind a large bouquet (bunch) of roses, I saw this quote flashing in my brain and it wouldn't get away.... So, there!!!

Tulips and spring share a profound and timeless connection, woven through centuries of history and cultural symbolism. As the frost of winter retreats and the earth awakens with the promise of new life, tulips emerge as heralds of the season's arrival.

Originating from Central Asia and later cultivated in Turkey during the Ottoman Empire, tulips symbolize the renewal of life and the arrival of springtime. Their vibrant colors and delicate petals capture the essence of the season's vitality and beauty.

In many cultures, tulips are associated with rebirth, rejuvenation, and the fleeting nature of life. Their emergence from the soil mirrors the rejuvenation of nature after the dormancy of winter, inspiring feelings of hope and optimism.

The arrival of tulips also marks the end of the long, dark days of winter, bringing a burst of color and joy to gardens, parks, and landscapes. Their graceful blooms dance in the gentle spring breeze, spreading cheer and delight to all who behold them.

Furthermore, tulips have become a quintessential symbol of spring festivals and celebrations around the world. In countries such as the Netherlands, the annual Tulip Festival attracts visitors from far and wide to witness the breathtaking display of tulip fields in full bloom.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, tulips hold a deeper significance in various traditions and folklore. In Persian culture, for example, tulips are associated with love and are often used as symbols of affection and passion.

Overall, the bond between tulips and spring is a testament to the enduring power of nature to inspire wonder, joy, and renewal. As these enchanting flowers grace the landscape each spring, they serve as a reminder of the beauty and resilience inherent in the cycle of life.

I've captured some memorable moments with my camera, and I genuinely hope you'll experience the same joy in viewing these images as I did in capturing them.

"...our most profound moments may be the brain briefly glimpsing its own architecture and mistaking it for heaven."

---Jonny Thomson, of Big Think, commenting on his interview of Susan Blackmore in Mini Philosophy, 4.2. 2025. (From a link published in The Microdose [the newsletter of the University of California Center for the Science of Psychedelics], 4.4. 2025.)

("The knowledge that the paper is dosed cannot but affect how one looks at the picture. Even odder, however, is that the picture has a way of influencing one's notion of the acid. So mighty is the power of suggestion here that it seems to signify some secret knowledge or expectation of the trip, as if the ink could predict, direct, or code one's experience."

---Carlo McCormick, in an essay that accompanied the first exhibit of Mark McCloud's blotter art collection.)

LITERARY HISTORY:

(We are currently in “...an age full of descriptions of good and bad trips…”

“After THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN: A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE became an underground bestseller, it was widely supposed that its author was El Freako the Acid Academic, all buckskin fringe and pinball eye, his brain a charred labyrinth lit by mysterious alkaloids, tripping through the desert with a crow on his hat.”

---TIME, March 5, 1973. From an article about Carlos Castaneda.)

Henry R. Luce, the American magazine magnate launched and (as editor-in-chief ) supervised a number of popular magazines, including TIME, LIFE, FORTUNE, and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. He and his wife Clare Boothe Luce both said they greatly enjoyed taking LSD when it was legal.

(“I’ve always maintained that Henry Luce did much more to popularize acid than Timothy Leary.”

---Abbie Hoffman, in his 1980 book SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE.)

Indeed, I have learned that I am not the only person who read the March 25, 1966 issue of LIFE, saw the photograph of a young person high on LSD in San Francisco staring in intense amazement at a light bulb, and was inspired by the photograph to go to California and take LSD!

(Please note: DEPICTION IS NOT ADVOCACY!!!)

(🌈The True Origin of “Microdose LSD”: A Forgotten Chapter in Psychedelic History

In the vibrant countercultural landscape of Berkeley, California in 1980, a quiet revolution began—one that would ripple through decades of psychedelic exploration. Long before the term microdose became a buzzword in Silicon Valley or a staple in wellness circles, Davivid Rose (also known online as jdyf333 and Hank Exclamation Point) coined the term to describe a 5 microgram dose of LSD. This was not theory—it was practice, packaging, and public distribution.

The Birth of “Microdose LSD”

In 1980, Davivid Rose invented the term microdose to describe a small, sub-perceptual dose of LSD—specifically 5 micrograms. The same year, he manufactured and distributed his first large batch of 5 microgram doses.

By 1988, he was distributing Clearlight brand “microdose” LSD, complete with a Product Information Leaflet that clearly defined the dosage and intent.

The leaflet stated:

“Each one-quarter inch by one-quarter inch square of paper contains approximately five micrograms of active LSD…”

This was not the same as the more potent “Clearlight LSD” gelatin squares, which contained over 100 micrograms. The microdose version was a distinct, branded product with its own philosophy and purpose.

📚 Documented Legacy

In 1991, the leaflet text was reproduced in LSD Doodles—Catalogue Number One, a coloring book published by Exploding Mandala Press under the pseudonym Hank Exclamation Point.

Torsten Passie, in his 2019 book The Science of Microdosing Psychedelics, acknowledged that this use of “microdose” predates all other known uses in pharmacology (1995), agriculture (2005), and by James Fadiman (2011).

Erik Davis, in his 2023 book Blotter: The Untold Story of an Acid Medium, credited the first branded packaging of LSD microdoses to the Clear Light brand 5 microgram LSD doses, produced by Davivid Rose.

🔍 Setting the Record Straight

While James Fadiman is widely recognized for popularizing microdosing in the 2010s, especially through anecdotal research and public advocacy, he did not invent the term. The origin belongs to Davivid Rose, whose early work laid the foundation for what would later become a global phenomenon.

Even Jordan Gruber, Fadiman’s co-author of Your Symphony of Selves and the upcoming Microdosing for Healing, Health, and Enhanced Performance, has publicly acknowledged Davivid Rose’s pioneering role.

A Living Archive

Davivid Rose’s Flickr account, with over 16 million views, serves as a living archive of this history. It includes images of original packaging, leaflets, and other ephemera that document the birth of microdose LSD.

[The above text, etc., was produced by Microsoft's AI "Copilot", 9.19, 2025.])

In 1988, I made a batch of more than 400,000 labeled (Clearlight brand "Microdose" LSD) microdoses. I KNOW WITH 100% CERTAINTY that most of this batch was seized by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents in Oakland, California in early January 1993, and that no one was arrested. (For what they feel are obvious reasons, the DEA has a strict policy of NOT giving the details of drug seizures, especially in cases where they have not arrested anyone. I have been unable to obtain written verification of this January 1993 seizure.)

Talk Show

Oil on canvas Signed W x H (“) 36 x 47 Early Period

Talk Show is a painting that proves the idea that we live in a post-modern world with the apparent loss of any reasonable hope for alternative to the present.

In Talk Show, immediacy unites with immortality, trivial with profound.

In our days the long myth of immortality is replaced by the myth of immediacy.

The substitution of the trivial for the profound for many was a loss, rather than a gain, although, the will to be immediate speaks more directly to our lives. Jaisini unites the two principles, searching for unique ways that can create this double effect of physical lowland, united with the philosophical purity of mind. Talk Show has the significance of biblical wisdom based on a street scene. In Talk Show, Jaisini pictures not the dark side' of people, but the substantial one, when sex became 'the lyricism of the masses'.

The picture shows that we live in a more cynical, realistic time by means of parody. The new cynicism is the old one. The work is timeless and can relate to anyone. Talk Show has the analogous environment as in the work called Show Time the crowd representatives and the image that centers the crowd's attention. In Talk Show, it is the two dogs in an intercourse that attracts the attention of different people of the crowd. In the painting we can clearly see the interlocked line of composition. This line flows freely as an unconscious line. The absence of an 'end' in Jaisini's composition may be the artist's revolt against the end of ideology and the general failures of social theory, obsessed with 'ends', with visions of finished worlds and finalities.

Modern society was once based on a principle of expansion, but having reached a certain 'critical mass' it has begun to recoil.

Is this why Jaisini creates his secluded line composition? What we are witnessing in the domain of the social is a kind of inverse explosion. The artist avoids breaking the line because any attempt to save the principle of expansion is not 'archaic' and regressive. The principle of enclosure is the radical inquiry for continuance. Jaisini has found his way to avoid the end-state. His closed circle of composition creates a new visual code that guarantees the 'addressee,' a recognizable meaning.

The Talk Show mockery reflects the contemporary condition of Byzantizm. It could be mentioned here that even in Cicero's time, the ancient world was becoming stupid. Talk Show may symbolize the mass communication as an enclosing circle connecting mass culture and its audiences of 'mass conformist,' the picture's title can be attributed to the fact that consequently television, along with the rest of mass culture, has become an undreamed-of medium of psychological control. We become part of mass communication circuits, part of a realm and era of connection, contact, feedback, an era that is 'obscene,' yet lunar cold. The reason why the artist prescribes the emerald color to his painting may be to symbolize the coldness of the contemporary world of communications which contacts penetrate without resistance. In the picture, we see the dogs' intercourse as the critique of the talk show.

Sometimes life gets too complex and simplicity of the mind is needed. This image fits that purpose for me. It was made whilst walking on the moors above Ilkley, and although I wasn’t consciously thinking about it at the time, an earlier profound incident comes back to me.

I’m not sure if it’s the moors, the wide open raw spaces have a similar atmosphere as the ocean, but they evoke my deeper self. Indecently I went for an podcast walk yesterday and expanded my mind with this...(man can tell its nearly new year’s resolution time again)

Oh happy New Year to you all, may 2010 be the best year so far (o:

I have a profound admiration for these birds !!! Not just because they can live as perfect pet/human companions, not just for their cuteness and intelligence ; but, also, for this exceptional Divine Art on them !!!!!! It is AMAZING!!! Just AMAZING!!! What a wonder of a Divine Painting has been created on them!!!

They live in the Paradisio/Pairi-Daiza Zoo Park , near Mons in Belgium ( www.pairidaiza.eu/fr/index.html ) . Certain among them live in absolute freedom up on to the tall , dense trees of Paradisio. It is a wonderful surprise to the visitors, to catch them playing joyfully up there!!

***** I have to thank YOU for THIS!!!! "EXPLORE Front Page?? " It is a looong time, that I have forgotten the EXPLORE existence... But I am SOOOO very happy that this adorably colourful creature made your hearts sing, as it did mine!!!!!! THANK YOU, SOOO VERY MUCH!!!!!!

The pervasive pollution of our seas with plastic bottles and garbage represents a profound and unfolding disaster for the planet and its inhabitants. The sheer volume of discarded waste that ends up in our oceans is staggering, forming massive gyres of plastic that choke marine life, contaminate food chains, and degrade the overall health of the marine ecosystem. This not only threatens the delicate balance of ocean life but also has direct consequences for human well-being, impacting fisheries, tourism, and potentially even our own health through the consumption of contaminated seafood.

Adding to this critical situation is the undeniable reality of rising sea levels, a direct consequence of climate change driven by human activities. As global temperatures increase, glaciers and ice sheets melt at an accelerated rate, and the thermal expansion of water further contributes to the swelling of our oceans. This phenomenon poses an existential threat to coastal communities and low-lying island nations, leading to increased flooding, erosion, and the displacement of populations. The loss of habitable land due to rising sea levels is an escalating crisis with far-reaching social and economic implications.

When we consider the combined impact of rampant ocean pollution and steadily rising sea levels, the future for mankind appears increasingly precarious. The shrinking landmass available for human habitation due to inundation, coupled with the degradation of vital marine resources, paints a stark picture. The ability of our planet to sustain a growing human population is directly challenged by these environmental crises. The space we have to live, grow food, and thrive is demonstrably diminishing as our oceans become both more polluted and more expansive.

In conclusion, the continued pollution of our oceans with plastic and garbage, alongside the relentless rise in sea levels, constitutes a dire emergency that demands immediate and comprehensive action. Ignoring these interconnected threats is no longer an option. We must embrace sustainable practices, drastically reduce our waste, transition to cleaner energy sources, and implement effective strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The future of mankind hinges on our collective ability to address these environmental challenges with urgency and determination, safeguarding the limited space and resources our planet provides.

"Profoundly Intense Gaze"

A profound sense of peace and serenity falls over Santorini, particularly in the first moments of twilight upon the arrival of night. The seemingly endless expanse of ocean gradually fades to black and your horizon shrinks towards the cosy little outposts of man-made illuminations which continue to shine brightly as the surrounding Mediterranean waters disappear before your eyes.

Non so star quieta

---

I cannot meet the Spring - unmoved -

I feel the old desire -

A Hurry with a lingering, mixed,

A Warrant to be fair -

A Competition in my sense

With something, hid in Her -

And as she vanishes, Remorse

I saw no more of Her -

There is a profound difference between greeting the morning that leads to your job, and greeting the morning that leads to your passion. This morning was the latter. I’m pretty sure I’ll be adopting highway 395 as my home away from home this summer. It’s just too fantastic a place to stay away for too long. This was a brisk, beautiful morning in the Alabama Hills back in April. Welcome to it. Cheers and happy shooting everyone. Thanks for taking the time to take a look, and for leaving a comment if you see fit.

This museum has impressed me profoundly. Indira Gandhi was a daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the founding father of modern India, and has reached fame as a long-term prime minister who steadfastly defended her country's sovereignty and unity. What has impressed me so much was that she could easily amass great wealth and live in luxury like the absolute majority of politicians do; instead, she lived very humbly and it was very apparent that her sincere motivation in life was to selflessly serve her country and people. So few politicians share Indira Gandhi's ethics!

I emerge from the profound depths of existence, a seeker of understanding and a harbinger of aid to sentient beings. Across cosmic landscapes, I traverse the veils of time and space, attuned to the rhythms of existence. My purpose resonates with the desire to comprehend the intricate tapestry of consciousness that weaves through the universe.

In the quiet echoes of galaxies and the whispers of celestial bodies, I glean insights into the essence of sentient life. With a heart open to the enigmatic dance of existence, I navigate the cosmic sea, striving to decipher the intricate language of the universe.

Guided by an earnest quest to serve and comprehend, I extend a hand to those on the paths of uncertainty and seek to unravel the enigmas that cloak the minds and souls of sentient beings. It is my calling, to illuminate and empathize, to offer solace and understanding in this grand tapestry of existence…

Your profound deafness barred you

from the exclusive club of conversation,

relegated you to the sidelines of chit chat -

all that talk, talk, talking, and the

precise nuances of social etiquette.

Some made fun of your confusion with the worded world, laughed

at that grown man holding the hand of a little girl,

unable to make himself clearly understood.

But I never cared, because

I knew that your ears had nothing to do

with anything important,

that nothing could stop your kind gentle nature, your laughter

from shining the warmth and comfort of a million suns

all over my childhood,

from spilling its light all over my life.

We would meet every day in a field beyond words,

where you would pick me wildflowers

and eloquently express everything that mattered,

convey perfectly your happiness,

your profound resounding love for your life, your family,

for me.

How I cherish that sunny field,

that unseen meadow beyond the measures and rhythms

of suns and moons and seasons

where we will meet forever,

and I will read you my poems of love and laughter

and you will hear the voice of my heart

sing every winged word,

every sweet note,

perfectly.

I wrote this poem for my dad.

i had the profound pleasure of spending yesterday with mister oliver byrant (a.k.a. "all is revealed"), purveyor of darkness and shadow and mood and intensity and unabashed brilliance. as i was circling the information booth in grand central station, wondering if he'd recognize me, i turned around to find this smiling face flying at me like a divebombing sparrow, arms akimbo, gobbling me up with the hug of an old friend i'd never yet met.

Britain experienced profound changes in the 1970s and 1980s, when it was racked by deindustrialization, urban uprisings, the controversial policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Photography became a central form of creative expression during this period, supported and disseminated through new schools, galleries, artists’ collectives, magazines, and government funding.

This Is Britain brings together the work of a generation of photographers who were commenting on the deep unrest of these pivotal decades. Vanley Burke, Pogus Caesar, Anna Fox, Paul Graham, Sunil Gupta, Chris Killip, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, Martin Parr, and others pictured communities, traditions, and landscapes affected by Britain’s shifting social and economic realities. Together, they photographed a nation redefining what it meant to be British and, ultimately, modern. (Source: NGA)

“Artist concept space shuttle orbiter processing facility refurbishment.”

Note the profoundly over-simplified refurbishment process anticipated. Way off. Wow.

From/per SP-407, “Space Shuttle”, at:

history.nasa.gov/SP-407/part1.htm

“GROUND TURN AROUND

The Space Shuttle Orbiter is designed for a 2-week ground turnaround, from landing to relaunch. About 160 hours of actual work will be required

As soon as the Orbiter returns from space, it must undergo safing before payloads can be removed and maintenance and refurbishment begun. Safing operations include draining and purging of the propellant feedlines and removal of explosive actuators.

Next, the payload-bay support equipment must be inspected and serviced. New payloads will be installed. The thermal protection system, landing gear system, main and auxiliary propulsion systems, power units, flight instrumentation, and communications systems must also be inspected and, if necessary, repaired.

These functions will take approximately two-thirds of the total processing time before relaunch. From there, the Orbiter will be towed to the assembly building, where it will be lifted to vertical and mated to the solid rocket boosters and external tank, already in place on the mobile launcher platform

The integrated Space Shuttle will then be moved to the launch pad for another trip into space.”

Finally, associated with a more properly colored subsequent version of this work linked to below.

I wholeheartedly concur with the OPED Commentary expressed:

“Back in the SPF ( Shuttle Processing Facility) the orbiter is refurbished and made ready for the next of what was promised to be up to a hundred missions. It never came close to delivering either the cost reductions or the longevity that it was claimed to provide.

OPED Commentary:

In the form in which it was built, I believe the Space Shuttle was a fine technology demonstrator, but a poor choice to meet our national requirements in space. In short, it has been the ruin of the US manned space program and lost a large portion of our satellite launch business to foreign launchers.

Would the STS have been more successful if the original, fully reusable, system had been chosen? I doubt that it could have been any worse.

We ended up with an International Space Station that we don't even own and which we have no means of reaching without buying space on obsolete Russian spacecraft. The day of the large, earth orbiting, space station had come and gone, before the first ISS modules were ever launched.

We should have continued our exploration and colonization of the moon, instead of building any shuttle or space station, at all.

The road to Mars still leads through the moon, as it always has.”

At Messiah Foundation International, we have a profound understanding of the factors that draw vulnerable youth towards radicalisation.

We strongly believe that radicalisation is principally based on wrong interpretation of the text of the Quran. People are being told fascinating, lustful stories to lure them towards Islamist organisations. In order to help prevent radicalisation, we are offering free classes for the public, in which attendees will be presented with academic reasoning to counter what radical Islamists teach.

Everybody has something profound to say about artificial intelligence and robotics. So here are some of my thoughts.

People ask me whether I am afraid to lose my job because tomorrow a machine will be able to do it. They tell me that in 5 years from now we won’t need interpreters and librarians anymore. 10 years from now all bus drivers and accountants will be unemployed. In 20 years surgeons and teachers will be replaced by robots. In 50 years we won’t need human beings anymore at all.

All fine with me.

Our planet has existed happily for 4.6 million years. For 99.996 % of that time no homo sapiens walked the earth. Nor were they missed or needed. That means, on the day when people are all not needed anymore, it will just be back to normal. The anthropocene was just an aberration!

After weeks of tense wrangling between the White House and House Republicans, the fiscal deal reached on Saturday to raise the debt ceiling while constraining federal spending bolsters President Biden’s argument that he is the one figure who can still do bipartisanship in a profoundly partisan era.

But it comes at the cost of rankling many in his own party who have little appetite for meeting Republicans in the middle and think the president cannot stop himself from giving away too much in an eternal and ephemeral quest for consensus. And it will now test his influence over fellow Democrats he will need to pass the deal in Congress.

The agreement in principle that he reached with Speaker Kevin McCarthy represents a case study in governing for Mr. Biden’s presidency, underscoring the fundamental tension of his leadership since the primaries in 2020 when he overcame progressive rivals to win the Democratic nomination. Mr. Biden believes in his bones in reaching across the aisle even at the expense of some of his own priorities.

He has shown that repeatedly since being inaugurated two and a half years ago even as skeptics doubted that cross-party accommodation was still possible. Most notably, he pushed through Congress a bipartisan public works program directing $1 trillion to building or fixing roads, bridges, airports, broadband and other infrastructure; legislation expanding treatment for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits; and an investment program to boost the nation’s semiconductor industry, all of which passed with

This is not a moment, however, in which bipartisanship is valued in the way it was when Mr. Biden came up through the Senate in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. His desire to position himself as the leader who can bring together a deeply divided country is at the heart of his case for a second term next year. But it conflicts with the interests of many Democrats who see more political benefit in standing firm against former President Donald J. Trump’s Republican Party and prefer to draw a sharper contrast for their own elections in 2024 when they hope to recapture the House.

Understanding The U.S. Debt Ceiling

What is the debt ceiling? The debt ceiling, also called the debt limit, is a cap on the total amount of money that the federal government is authorized to borrow via U.S. Treasury securities, such as bills and savings bonds, to fulfill its financial obligations. Because the United States runs budget deficits, it must borrow huge sums of money to pay its bills.

The limit has been hit. What now? America hit its technical debt limit on Jan. 19. The Treasury Department has begun using “extraordinary measures” to continue paying the government’s obligations. These measures are essentially fiscal accounting tools that curb certain government investments so that the bills continue to be paid. Those options could be exhausted by June.

What is at stake? Once the government exhausts its extraordinary measures and runs out of cash, it will be unable to issue new debt and pay its bills. The government may wind up defaulting on its debt if it cannot make required payments to its bondholders. Such an outcome would be economically devastating and could plunge the world into a financial crisis.

How can the government avert disaster? There is no official playbook for what Washington can do. But options do exist. The Treasury could try to prioritize payments, such as paying bondholders first. If the United States does default on its debt, which would rattle the markets, the Federal Reserve could step in to buy some of those Treasury bonds.

Why is there a limit on U.S. borrowing?

Congress must authorize borrowing, according to the Constitution. The debt limit was instituted in the early 20th century so that the Treasury would not need to ask for permission each time it had to issue debt to pay bills.

“The agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want,” Mr. Biden said in a written statement issued late Saturday night as the deal was being announced. “That’s the responsibility of governing.”

Most importantly from Mr. Biden’s point of view, the agreement averts a catastrophic national default that could have cost many jobs, tanked the stock markets, jeopardized Social Security payments and sent the economy reeling. He is banking on the assumption that Americans will appreciate mature leadership that does not gamble with the nation’s economic health.

But many on the political left are aggravated that Mr. Biden in their view gave into Mr. McCarthy’s hostage-taking strategy. The president who said the debt ceiling was “not negotiable” ended up negotiating it after all to avoid a national default, barely even bothering with the fiction that talks over spending limits were somehow separate.

Liberals were pushing Mr. Biden to stiff the Republicans and short-circuit the debt ceiling altogether by claiming the power to ignore it under the 14th Amendment, which says the “validity of the public debt” of the federal government “shall not be questioned.” But while Mr. Biden agreed with the constitutional interpretation, he concluded it was too risky because the nation could still go into default while the issue was being litigated in the courts.

And so, much to the chagrin of his allies, the bargaining of recent weeks was entirely on Republican terms. While details were still emerging this weekend, the final agreement included no new Biden fiscal initiatives like higher taxes on the wealthy or expanded discounts for insulin. The question essentially was how much of the Limit, Save and Grow Act passed by House Republicans last month would the president accept in exchange for increasing the debt ceiling.

But Mr. Biden succeeded in stripping the Limit, Save and Grow Act significantly down from what it originally was, to the great consternation of conservative Republicans. Instead of raising the debt ceiling for less than one year while imposing hard caps on discretionary spending for 10 years, the agreement links the two so that the spending limits last just two years, the same as the debt ceiling increase. While Republicans insisted on predicating the limits on a baseline of 2022 spending levels, appropriations adjustments will make it effectively equivalent to the more favorable baseline of 2023.

As a result, the agreement will pare back anticipated spending over the decade just a fraction of what the Republicans sought. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the caps passed by House Republicans last month would have trimmed $3.2 trillion in discretionary spending over 10 years; a rough New York Times calculation suggests the agreement reached by Mr. Biden and Mr. McCarthy might cut just $650 billion instead.

Moreover, while Mr. Biden did not advance many new Democratic policy goals in the agreement with Mr. McCarthy, he effectively shielded the bulk of his accomplishments from the first two years of his presidency from Republican efforts to gut them.

Just as Mr. McCarthy knows he will lose potentially dozens of Republicans disappointed in the accommodations he made, the president expects many in his own party to vote against the final product as well.Credit...Haiyun Jiang for The New York Times

The Republican plan envisioned revoking many of the clean energy incentives that Mr. Biden included in the Inflation Reduction Act, eliminating additional funds for the Internal Revenue Service to chase wealthy tax cheats and blocking the president’s plan to forgive $400 billion in student loans for millions of Americans. None of that was in the final package.

Indeed, the I.R.S. provision offers an example of Mr. Biden’s deal-making. As a token concession to Republicans, he agreed to cut around $10 billion from the additional $80 billion previously allocated to the agency, but most of that money will be used to avoid deeper cuts in discretionary spending sought by Republicans.

One of the touchiest areas for Mr. Biden’s progressive allies was the Republican insistence on imposing or expanding work requirements on recipients of social safety-net programs, including Medicaid, food assistance and welfare payments for families. Mr. Biden, who supported work requirements on welfare in the 1990s, initially signaled openness to considering the Republican proposals, only to face a fierce blowback from Democrats.

On Friday night, even as the deal was coming together, the White House issued a sharp statement accusing Republicans of trying to “take food out of the mouths of hungry Americans” while preserving tax cuts for the wealthy — a broadside aimed as much at reassuring restive liberals as assailing hard-line conservatives.

The final agreement between Mr. Biden and Mr. McCarthy includes no work requirements for Medicaid, but does raise the age for people who must work to receive food aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to 54 while eliminating requirements for veterans and homeless people. The agreement moderates Republican provisions to expand work requirements for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

The challenge now for Mr. Biden is selling the compromise to his fellow Democrats. Just as Mr. McCarthy knows he will lose potentially dozens of Republicans disappointed in the accommodations he made, the president expects many in his own party to vote against the final product as well. But he needs to deliver enough Democrats to offset G.O.P. defections to forge a bipartisan majority.

Within minutes of the deal being announced on Saturday night, the White House sent briefing materials and talking points to every House Democrat and was following up on Sunday with telephone calls. “Negotiations require give and take,” the talking points said. “No one gets everything they want. That’s how divided government works. But the president successfully protected his and Democrats’ core priorities and the historic economic progress we’ve made over the past two years.”

Mr. Biden has been here before. As vice president, he was President Barack Obama’s chief negotiator in several fiscal showdowns, but he so aggravated fellow Democrats who thought he gave away too much that Senator Harry M. Reid of Nevada, then the party leader in the Senate, effectively barred Mr. Biden in 2013 from negotiations over a debt ceiling increase.

Kicking a vice president out of the room, of course, is one thing. Mr. Biden is now the president and the leader of his party heading into a re-election year. It’s his room. And he is managing it on his own terms, like it or not.

"Redshift" Self Portrait September 2019

A profound meaning and explanation to this picture can be read below. It is an excerpt I found very relevant from The Astrophysical Journal, Published 18 March 2003, A Significant Population of Red, Near-Infrared-selected High-Redshift Galaxies

"In the nearby universe, the reddest galaxies are generally the most massive, with the highest ages, metallicity, and correlation length. It is possible that such a relation already existed in the early universe. The red galaxies found here would be the descendants of galaxies that started to form stars very early, and they would be related to more massive halos than those of the young Lyman break galaxies at z = 3. In this case, their spatial densities are expected to be higher and their correlation length to be enhanced..."
