I needed a new profile photo for my university website, and had to also snap some passport photos. This photo is accordingly pretty boring - a quick shot as an afterthought - but you get two for the price of one.

Lighting is pretty simple. Shot at 70mm, 1/320s @ f/2.8.

Rim 1: SB-800 in closed down silver umbrella, camera left, at 1/8 or something.

Rim 2: SB-600 in closed down shoot-through umbrella, camera right.

Background: one SB-600 on the background with a blue gel.

Key: whatever fill was spilling from the two umbrellas.

In the works: Base black & white illustrations for future product designs by artist Johanna Parker

The big experiment. I decided to process my own negs which would allow me more flexibility and possibilities. I gathered a bunch of supplies at Pro Photo Connection in Irvine (I needed everything). Looked at a few youtubes and blogs of people developing and felt I was ready (after practicing reeling up 120 on a steel reel).

So today my girlfriend and I went to Orange, CA to eat at a Lebanese place. I took pictures along the way, all in all I spent maybe 45 min taking photos. I just wanted to get through a roll and process. I used Ilford FP4 because it's easiest to expose correctly with with my camera.

So I got home and reeled things up in the bag, poured in the D76 and followed the steps. The result? I'm really happy. 1: because things actually turned out, and 2: I was delighted with how my Hasselblad performed after disappointing results last week.

She wanted me to take her picture but I told her she would look

completely dark and be unrecognizable. Afterwards she laughed with

friend and said, "Look! It´s my profile".

Ah yes, I told her. We can stamp you on a coin.

Is that funny?

Jess in profile.

Jess and I were just working with some different lighting setups when we came up with this shot. I think this shot shows the strength of her profile and takes advantage or her red hair.
