I didn't take this photo, just the photo of the photo. But...

This could very well be a photograph taken by Stanley Kubrick himself. It appears to be taken with a Widelux camera, one of Kubrick's many "toys," which he liked to have with him on his sets. The "2001" sets lent themselves to this particular kind of camera: a fixed super-wide angle lens that offered a panoramic view. I believe Kubrick loaded his camera with Ektachrome film, which may be why this enlargement at the exhibit still looks good and hasn't suffered any color degradation. This is Gary Lockwood as Frank Poole, monitoring Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) as he does his EVA to replace the alleged faulty AE-35 unit.

Hi there!

What’s a Wyndotte? Good question. We have an answer for that and this seems like as good a time as any to explain ourselves.

Short answer: It’s a chicken. Specifically a pageant bird. Your Hunny-Boo-Boo of chickens.

It’s...

I based the lighting on what was existing around midnight when we shot the scene. I let the D3S capture the light from the city in the far background bouncing off the low clouds. I knew if I added too much of my own lighting I would need to use a smaller f-stop and if I did that I would not see the city lights.

Then I added only two of my own lights to illuminate the scene.

One was a bare 40 watt light bulb on the screened porch. I plugged it into a cheap US $12 hardware store dimmer that I carry in my grip kit. I dialed back the dimmer so the light level looked "real". Otherwise the screened porch would have been much too dark.

I wanted to simulate a street light from camera left so I put up one of my tallest light stands and placed one of my Lowel DP tungsten lights that had a 650 watt bulb installed. To break up the light and make it seem as though the light was being obstructed by tree branches, I added a second tall light stand on top of which I clamped a bunch of dead weeds and twigs that I found in an empty lot nearby.

There was too much light on the vehicles. So I clamped a black 20x30 inch foamcore board to a third light stand in order to throw a large shadow onto the vehicles.
