Product design students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are bringing their eyes for design to a humanitarian engineering project that will send low-cost surgical drills to Nepal.
The Arbutus Drill Cover, in development by Arbutus Medical since January 2013, turns accessible hardware-store power drills into sterilized, effective and affordable surgical tools.
For six weeks, third-year product design students at KPU’s Wilson School of Design have produced 86 iterations of Arbutus’ covers to develop the best possible design for the life-saving idea.
Students have been honing the design to create a streamlined pattern for the soft drill cover bag.
Arbutus has set up a GoFundMe campaign to fund the request, and approached KPU’s Wilson School of Design to deliver the drills.

The MotoFocus concept allows the user to break away from linear restrictions and manage life spatially. By simulating three-dimensional space, the dome shaped display creates a feeling of depth unlike any other device. Manage both work and personal tasks by sliding displays side-to-side. A product that converts dreams into music using bio-sensors attached to your hand whilst you sleep. When you log on in the morning you see on your PC, "4 new dreams saved", which you can then play back. The music is uploaded and can be swapped online and discussed along with their meanings.
Friday 02-27-09 Today sophomores in the IPD program presented their exhibition- "Ikebana" Taking the ancient Japanese form of flower arranging and adding in their knowledge of color theory, 3D design and topping it off with background learned in their LAS classes the students produced some amazing results.
