Here is a beautifully produced video from the Rollins Museum of Art:

Assembled over more than 40 years by Houston-based art collector and cofounder of the Medici Archive Project Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl, the Haukohl Family Collection is one of the finest and most extensive holdings of Florentine baroque art in private hands outside of Italy. “Beyond the Medici” brings a selection from this collection to the University of Georgia, offering a unique opportunity for students and the wider community to experience these works of art.

The spectacular art of baroque Florence has traditionally suffered from a lack of art historical attention. In the 17th century, most leading artists in Italy lived or worked in Rome. Meanwhile in Florence, the Medici family of bankers and politicians sponsored advances in music and the sciences. In this context, foreign and native artists developed a Florentine baroque style that is at once sensuous and deeply religious, poetic and classical, exuberant and restrained.

“Beyond the Medici” illustrates the sumptuous visual pageantry and the blending of new stylistic elements with established models that are central to Florentine baroque art. It also sheds light on the intellectual history of Florence under the reign of the Medici. Beyond the Medici” was organized by Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl with the generous support of the Haukohl Philanthropies.

The exhibition comes from the largest and most important collection of Florentine baroque art outside of Italy, assembled over more than 40 years by Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl, an art collector and cofounder of the Medici Archive Project. “Beyond the Medici” illustrates how Florentine artists of the 17th and 18th centuries influenced European art history, politics and philosophy.

Extraordinary allegories, religious motifs, genre scenes and portraits by Jacopo da Empoli, Felice Ficherelli, Francesco Furini and Onorio Marinari form the core of the collection. The exhibition also devotes a section to artists, writers and scholars that sheds light on the intellectual history of Florence under the reign of the Medici grand dukes. Four polychrome stucco reliefs by Antonio Monauti show Renaissance greats Michelangelo Buonarroti, Niccolò Machiavelli, Marsilio Ficino and the polymath Galileo Galilei.

The exhibition includes paintings by three generations and over 100 years of the Dandini family, beginning with Cesare Dandini (1596-1657). Dandini founded a school of painters of classical themes personified by female figures, whose beauty was calculated to appeal to private collectors. His younger brother, Vincenzo (1609-1675), is represented in the exhibition by impressive representations of St. Mark the Evangelist and the goddess Juno. The leader of the younger generations of the dynasty, which extended into the 18th century, was Pietro Dandini (1646-1712) whose large canvas “Esther Before Ahasuerus” lends a splendidly colorful presence to the show.

As a whole, the exhibition shows the deep interest of the Florentine baroque for science and for painting based on disegno (drawing). Several art works feature magnificent 17th-century period frames. The rich tradition of the Haukohl family in collecting art follows the example of the Medici and will undoubtedly offer many surprises to visitors.

During the High Renaissance, Florence was an important center for the arts, fueled by the powerful Medici family of bankers, politicians and Vatican popes who served as patrons for many artists. The Medici continued to commission art during the baroque era that followed the Renaissance. Haukohl’s focus on the Florentine baroque is interesting because it sheds light on a unique chapter of the baroque era. During this time, artists developed a style that was sensuous, deeply religious, poetic and classical.

“The important scholarship and superior humanities programs offered at the University of Georgia immediately drew us to include the Georgia Museum of Art in the American tour of the Medici Collection. We look forward to sharing with the students and broad communities of Georgia the joy of the baroque,” Haukohl said.

Some garden produce I lifted today to make a pot of soup.

Quick, down-and-dirty project using old transparent curtains to make produce bags for the grocery store. Not a work of art, but they work really well, and it's easy to read the sticker on the produce through the bag. Better than those rolls of plastic bags.

This photo was taken on December 2nd, 2024 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. The photo is of the Community learning garden on campus and is highlighting the newly placed hay over the plant beds. This hay provides an ecosystem service to the planting areas as they will not be growing crops in the coming months. In fact, the hay is used to protect the soil from weathering and provide nutrients back into the soil as no plants during the winter season will be able to do so. This is very important for keeping the health of the soil high for spring planting. The community learning garden serves many purposes on our campus, but mainly it provides local and fresh produce to those in need at the campus pantry. 100% of all the produce harvested, that meets standards, is shipped across campus to the South market area where the pantry is located. Students can enter the pantry with no questions asked and fill an entire bag per visit. This is one of the ways that the community learning garden successfully tackles sustainable development goal #2: zero hunger. Although the produce is only accessible to students and faculty on campus, it is a great start to solving zero hunger. It is even better that this program is completely free for the user.

The other main goal that the community learning garden aims to solve is SDG #4: quality education. Many classes, clubs, and service opportunities are run through the garden and all strive to further educate the student body. The entire project itself was a grant given to students by the University and was a majority student run initiative. Now, students learn all about planting and harvesting, and everything in between. This garden is truly an amazing gateway to accomplish two SDGs, while providing ecosystem services to our campus (makes the alleyway a lot prettier) and literally providing for our campus on multiple levels.

Living here in Az, we do not have any streams and creeks to photo...the best I could think of close by was the water fountains at the temple. I shot this trying to capture slow motion. The picture looked so pretty in color, with the contrasting flowers in the background. I shot it using f/29, 1/5 and 55mm settings. I also used a tripod.

A day at Musselburgh produced some great views of 3 snow buntings and many turnstone . I love the shadow in this picture as it is almost the exact shape as the real bird.

UNICEF produced a contemporary photographic exhibition titled “Dhaliy Baydhaby: Through their Eyes – Lived Experiences of Somali Children.” This exhibition explores the realities of children in and around Baidoa who are marginalized and in need of support.

The aim of the exhibition is to serve as an advocacy tool for children living in similar communities across Somalia.

This project was conducted in collaboration with the Somali Arts Foundation using an immersive approach. SAF staff and consultants spent time with the children and their communities, co-creating the images featured in the exhibition. We are incredibly proud of the final product, as it truly reflects a collaborative effort with the children and their communities to tell their stories in an authentic manner.

Formerly Jewel Osco 3035 "Franklin & Barker" (3535 South Franklin Street, Michigan City, IN)

I was highly impressed with this store. When Jewel Osco decided to close this store in September 2012, it was immediately converted into an Al's Supermarket that replaced another one up the road. Up until this year, this store looked almost identical to a Jewel Osco. Despite the changes, there are still many remnants to Jewel, and I also really like what Al's did to this store. I did visit this store a few times when it was Jewel still.

I had coffee and spent a little time with my friend Slapshotter today as he prepares for a hoard of out-of-town guests descending on him this afternoon. We made a run through the garden and brought in these beauties.
