While in the Canada Farm hide at Shapwick Heath on the Somerset Levels, a number of large wasps kept flying in and out and although not really a problem it wasn't much fun. Then one got caught in a web under the tin roof. Being a large wasp (Queen?), I thought that it would just pull itself out and fly away, but I was amazed at what happened next, Being caught under the corrugated roof should not have been an issue, but the spiders instead of taking on the wasp, worked together and sealed it in from behind. I have never seen spiders work together like this. After this there were no further wasps in the hide !!

Stopped Train at Haggin, Sacramento, 11 Feb 2017
Union Pacific has problems in northern California.
The Feather River Canyon route is closed by washouts at several locations.
Yesterday, the Track-Roseville turn derailed at the Cosumnes River near Elk Grove, closing the Freson Sub between Sacramento and Stockton, so trains were diverting via the Sacramento Sub, requiring trains going to or from Roseville or Oakland to back around the wye at Haggin, in Sacramento.
A train was backing onto the Sac Sub this morning and encountered some high voltage electrical wires that were down across the track and highway 160 and the train was stopped with its engines fouling the #1 main of the Martinez Sub at Haggin, at the Blue Diamond almond plant.
I checked out the situation at Haggin this afternoon and while I was there a Renzenberger van came and picked up the crew of the stopped train and a train that might have been the Roseville-West Colton manifest (MRVWC) came west. This train might go over Altamont and return to the valley route, or possibly go down the Coast Route.
All in all, the kind of mess UP has not had to endure for a few years around here...messed up like 2011 when Donner was closed by snow or 2007, when the trestle by the American River bridge burned on the Martinez Sub.

Removed one attic vent and sealed wood under and over the vent area, and reinstalled existing vent
Replaced vent on back of house, with new one as it was cracked
Added Pipe flashing to 3 inch pipe where it was cracked
Old repair done shingles over shingles, took off old shingles as there were framing nails sticking out roof—and replaced that section with shingles (back of house above chimney area)
Sealed every seam in 12x12 foot span with roof cement

After a Rode Wireless Mic II recording session with two transmitters, I put the devices back into their soft carrying case. The devices worked well for an interview I had with Shel Holtz.
When I opened the case a few hours later, I discovered the receiver would not recharge. While connected to my standard 5V charging port, the receiver felt warm to touch and its little window became translucent. The battery charging icon never illuminated. I disconnected the charging cable after a few minutes and connected it to the two Rode Wireless II Go transmitters. They charged without any problem.
The defective receiver was made in Australia. It has the number GE0295427 on its rear. It has never been dropped, crushed, or wet. I've used it in more than 20 recording sessions. Until last week, it was a favourite piece of my technology. I've discovered a Reddit thread written by national broadcasters in Ireland in which the mobile journalists have recommended against buying the Rode Wireless Go II because they've encountered battery problems with the devices.
I'm happy getting a replacement receiver from the manufacturer or from B-stock through Thomann.

Città del Vaticano – Il Cupolone ridotto a groviera. Se il codice degli appalti in Vaticano fosse stato approvato prima, magari qualche mese fa, probabilmente il pasticcio che si è venuto a creare per il grandioso restauro della cupola di San Pietro, gioiello michelangiolesco unico al mondo, forse avrebbe evitato il commissariamento della Fabbrica, l'organismo che da cinque secoli sovrintende ogni lavoro interno ed esterno al luogo di culto più prezioso del cattolicesimo, dove sono sepolti i Papi e dove si pensa sia sepolto anche l'Apostolo Pietro, grazie alla famosa iscrizione «Petrus Eni» ritrovata negli anni cinquanta nella necropoli sotto le fondamenta.

Nelle settimane scorse – prima che il Papa desse ordine di fare partire la clamorosa inchiesta giudiziaria interna promossa per sradicare una sostanziale opacità nella gestione della Fabbrica (cosa di cui si lamentava persino il cardinale Pell già 5 anni fa) – si si sono intensificati i controlli tecnici e le valutazioni d'urgenza per valutare come stanno andando avanti i lavori.

Il progetto di restauro e conservazione del Cupolone si presenta particolarmente complesso e delicato, non solo per l'altezza ma anche per il rischio di rovinare i materiali utilizzati da Michelangelo. Soprattutto il travertino che compone la struttura di questo gioiello architettonico. I primi tecnici ad accorgersi che la realizzazione si stava presentando più brigosa del solito sono stati gli ingegneri del Governatorato che hanno subito sollevato il problema, facendo affiorare mille interrogativi sui criteri adottati nel scegliere le imprese coinvolte. Un tema delicato e tutto da accertare che, di riflesso, ha riportato a galla vecchie critiche interne legate ad una certa opacità complessiva relativa al passato. Sembra fossero le stesse ditte a vincere gli appalti senza gara.

Ciò che sta destando preoccupazione ed è oggetto di valutazioni di tipo tecnico pare essere il metodo di fissazione dei ponteggi usato al fine di renderli stabili. E' stato sollevato il problema che il travertino è stato bucato come un groviera con enormi stop per un totale di centinaia e centinaia di buchi. Ora dovranno stabilire se tutto questo era stato previsto oppure no.

Dopo il Commissariamento della Fabbrica di San Pietro, il cardinale Angelo Comastri - responsabile dell'organismo - continua la sua attività sicuro che verrà fatta luce al più presto. Solo un tecnico pare sia stato momentaneamente 'sospeso' dall'operatività dell'incarico ma i lavori sull'impalcatura proseguono. Probabilmente troppo importanti, troppo costosi e troppo 'delicati' anche dal punto di vista contrattuale. Il monitoraggio è ora sotto il Governatorato.

Nel nuovo codice degli appalti gli enti per partecipare ad una gara dovranno in futuro inoltrare richiesta all’Apsa che provvede alla pubblicazione di indizione della gara sul sito www.bandipubblici.va (un sito in costruzione) con il nome dell’ente appaltante; l’oggetto dell’appalto; la tipologia di procedura e la categoria di specializzazione; infine il termine e la modalità per richiedere la documentazione di gara. Sarà poi l'Apsa a inviare una comunicazione ai fornitori iscritti.

Per commissariare la Fabbrica di San Pietro il Papa ha scelto la giornata del 29 giugno, San Pietro e Paolo. Una data simbolica trasformatasi di fatto in un chiaro segnale interno al piccolo Stato vaticano dove ormai regna tra le varie amministrazioni un clima di terrore.
I magistrati del Papa indagano sulle ipotesi di peculato e abuso d'ufficio, anche se il Vaticano non ha voluto specificare nulla, affidando la notizia ad un comunicato di poche righe. Un atto di sfiducia del genere nei confronti del cardinale arciprete – ruolo attualmente ricoperto da Comastri, 77 anni e in via di uscita - non ha memoria storica e probabilmente è davvero la prima volta che la Fabbrica di San Pietro viene commissariata in questo modo. I gendarmi hanno persino perquisito alcuni uffici amministrativi portando via carte, schedari, computer.
Il restauro del tamburo della Cupola fa parte di una grande progetto conservativo resosi necessario dal degradato stato di conservazione della superficie lapidea. Il cantiere era iniziato il 2 settembre 2019 con il montaggio del ponteggio. Il tamburo è caratterizzato dalla presenza di sedici contrafforti.
Il progetto, aveva spiegato l'Osservatore Romano in un articolo di qualche mese fa, prevede quattro anni di lavori: due per il primo lotto, salvo imprevisti, che comprende otto specchiature e otto contrafforti. Anche per il secondo lotto occorrono due anni di lavori per sistemare gli otto contrafforti e le otto specchiature. Il tamburo sviluppa una superficie complessiva di 8.900 metri quadrati di travertino, compresi gli aggetti architettonici e la superficie dei sedici contrafforti, mentre il “maschio” del tamburo sviluppa una superficie di 440 metri quadri di muratura di laterizio a faccia vista. L’altezza complessiva del tamburo è di 36,63 metri, la circonferenza alla base delle colonne dei contrafforti è di 168 metri; quella alla base delle finestre è invece di 153 metri. Misure imponenti, quindi, per lavori delicatissimi.
