This Ionic-order gem is also known as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis.

The Sun is a problematic friend of mine who, like an obnoxious tourist, keeps wandering into my photos. Here, however, he succeeds in giving this lovely and remarkable survivor from Rome's Republican era an appropriately numinous glow.

Much more recent photos show that the Temple's stone has been cleared of black crusts and restored to its original colors. However, the outer coating of stucco this building wore in antiquity has not been reapplied.

The columns and other portions are made of pitted, off-white Tivoli Travertine, quarried east of the Eternal City in the Acque Albule region. It's an unusual type of limestone that precipitates in hot springs. Geologically very young, it dates just to the Pleistocene and the Holocene, our current epoch.

A favorite ornamental facing stone of ancient Roman architects, the Tivoli Travertine is still quarried today. Many examples of its continued architectural use can be found in two great US cities, Chicago and Milwaukee, where it adorns modern skyscrapers and houses of worship. And, of course, it's in evidence everywhere else, too.

The cella (inner enclosure) of the Temple is largely made of a more utilitarian rock type, a Pleistocene-aged selection I call the Central Italian Tuff. It was quarried from different lithified-volcanic-ash deposits outside of Rome. One variety found here is the "Peperino dei Colli Albani." As its name implies, it came from the Alban Hills southeast of Rome.

Architectural historians often call the Central Italian Tuff "tufa" instead. But despite the confusing similarity of these two names, tufa is actually a much different rock type, of sedimentary rather than igneous origin.

Both the Tivoli Travertine and the Central Italian Tuff are products of the intense geothermal and volcanic activity experienced in the greater Rome region in the last 600 ka or so.

The notes for this slide read: 31168 at Doncaster on the 20th January 1983

Class 31 31168 entered service as Class 30 D5586 in February 1960. Its problematic Mirrlees 12 cylinder power unit was changed for a 1470 bhp English Electric 12SVT power unit at Doncaster works during September 1967, and the loco was reclassified as a Class 31/1. D5586 received its BR Blue livery in July 1973 and then became 31168 when it was renumbered under TOPs in February 1974.

31168 received its final classified repair in March 1983 and went on to retain its old "Banger Blue" livery right up to early withdrawl in December 1991 - by which time it was in a faded and very grubby state. It was placed into storage at Bescot Yard, remaining there for almost a decade until its remains were broken up by HNRC, at EMR Kingsbury, during May 2001.

Note: The number 2 end cab door looks like it's had a few good kicks in its time judging by the worn paint mark!

Each little box has a virgin queen and a tiny colony of about 400 workers.

each virgin queen is from a larva that was selected from a colony with good Irish black bee stock, good temper, not swarmy.

She will mate from this small colony and if successful, then she can be used to requeen a problematic hive or to start a new colony.

This is at the Belfast Association Apiary and the area is rich with good black bee drones. She will mate with about 15 drones and the chances in this apiary are that all or most of these will be Irish black bees.

The most important recorded work by Petr Smukrovich, this sumptuous large-scale painting drew the attention of critics at the 1913 graduation show of the Imperial Academy of Arts with the Apollon reviewer singling it out as the most accomplished work that year and praising its technical virtuosity (Apollon, no.9, 1913, p.68).

Smukrovich’s noble family roots would become problematic for his advancement as an artist under Bolshevik rule and he would eventually be restricted to teaching, but Toilette was painted at a time when the artist was free to hark back to the era evoked by Konstantin Makovsky’s genre scenes, to delight in rich materials, explore the time-honoured servant-mistress motif and create a Russified version of Édouard Manet’s Olympia (1863). The intimate and decorative qualities are at the same time redolent of the World of Art movement, such as the bright and erotically-charged watercolours of his contemporary Konstantin Somov.

In 1897 Smukrovich enrolled in the Baron Stieglitz School for Technical Drawing in St Petersburg, where his earliest commissions were for decorative designs for the city’s churches including doors for the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. From 1905 he studied under Dmitry Kardovsky at the Imperial Academy of Arts alongside Boris Anisfeld, Alexander Yakovlev and Vasily Shukhaev, whose friendship brought him into the orbit of former World of Art members. Soon after graduating Smukrovich was conscripted and joined the Izmaylovsky regiment, the same regiment in which Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin served. The watercolours that he brought back from the Turkish front were published in Niva and Lukomorye. After the Bolshevik Revolution, Smukrovich returned to Petrograd where he worked on designs for public celebrations including those produced for the first anniversary of the Revolution in 1918 which are in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.

Cardiocrinum are large bulbous perennials with heart-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers resembling lilies, followed by erect oblong seed capsules.

Monocarpic, the bulbs dying after flowering, but this isn't too much of a hardship as she produces lots of offshoots from the bulb to more than replace her! Just might not be in flower every year (I have two, and the other one isn't going to flower this year!

One big problem is that it attracts the attention of lily beetles, as can be seen on the leaves! 😭 Less problematic is the rabbit invasion into my garden … hence the metal ring fence around her base.

C. giganteum is a perennial to 6ft in height, with leaves to 10-12ins across, and terminal racemes of fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers marked with purple within the mouth, as can be seen on the closeup, ------> next shot!

The last time I lost my car keys, I was at the Pismo lagoon (Pismo Beach, California). It was pure luck that I found them behind a sand dune after an hour of frantic searching. I was happy I didn't have to call my neighbors, who had a copy of my house key, and could have found my spare. I recently acquired a gently-used Prius, which came with ONE keyfob. A bit problematic to not have spares. At 200-500 $, it's a pretty expensive proposition to get extras made. But a friend of mine in SLO lost her Prius keys and probably was horrified...the cost of getting a locksmith to make duplicates, or even worse, to have the dealership do so! Fortunately the locksmith they called somehow located her keys, and it was *only* $75. I will get an extra copy made. I don't want to be like this Red-tailed Hawk, searching in the grass! BTW, a Prius is a great car for birdwatching, since it makes no noise at all when you stop to look at the bird, and doesn't vibrate when you take pictures, even when you don't turn off the engine.

“Your conflicts, all the difficult things, the problematic situations in your life are not chance or haphazard. They are actually yours. They are specifically yours, designed specifically for you by a part of you that loves you more than anything else. The part of you that loves you more than anything else has created roadblocks to lead you to yourself. You are not going in the right direction unless there is something pricking you in the side, telling you, “Look here! This way!” That part of you loves you so much that it doesn’t want you to lose the chance. It will go to extreme measures to wake you up, it will make you suffer greatly if you don’t listen. What else can it do? That is its purpose.” - A. Hameed Ali

I think 4 and 5-year old Fabrício and Guilherme have already had more than their fare share of the difficult things. Now they need peace......

I'll be telling their story in a new group later on..................in the hope of your help!

QUESTI ULTIMI GIORNI SONO STATI PROBLEMATICI E MI HANNO IMPEDITO DI DIEDICARMI ALLE TUE FOTOGRAFIE COME AVREI VOLUTO.

THESE LAST FEW DAYS HAVE BEEN PROBLEMATIC AND HAVE PREVENTED ME FROM DIEDICATING MYSELF TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS AS I WOULD HAVE LIKED.

I HOPE TO CATCH UP SOON. CIAO AND, HAPPY WEEKEND

Not sure why, but these points were a little problematic. Here Damien's power van split the points and my Garratt ran into the back.

Doesnt look like much but I was able to remove some of the parts from the original build and revamped the design to create a sturdier structure. There is now far less stress being placed on the knees which was previously the most problematic area.

D1015, pretending to be D1041, stands at Leamington Spa waiting for the green signal to continue to Canterbury. It ended up leaving Leamington 181 late due to a stock problem forcing it to uncouple and put the problematic coach in the sidings.

In 1973-4, the new MCW bodied Bristol VRTs being brought into service on the West Midlands PTE, North Division were proving to be mechanically problematic. As a consequence their service availably was low.

Additionally, ex Wolverhampton Guy Arabs buses from the 1966/67 187-217N MDA-E batch were having to be withdrawn due to structural issues. There was also a number of the 1961 Guy Arab IVs, 50N onwards (4050JW etc) at Walsall Works being overhauled, leading to further vehicle shortages. As a temporary situation until matters were resolved, a number of older front-engined buses were drafted into Wolverhampton from Birmingham and West Bromwich to help out.

Amongst those buses was 2543, an ex Birmingham City Transport, Guy Arab IV motorbus. Allocated to Park Lane bus garage, 2543 is pictured in Stafford Street, Wolverhampton awaiting a crew change. The bus is working the Bushbury Lane to Northwood Park service, which was then still a crew operated route.

The destination blind showing 'Birmingham' terminal points has been removed, however, it has not been fitted with a replacement Wolverhampton District blind. The blind boxes on these ex Birmingham buses were of a larger size to the standard Wolverhampton destination boxes, and would have required 44" wide blinds to be fitted. Because of their temporary deployment and restricted route use, these buses were operated with 'service numbers' only.

I remember thinking a couple of months ago that summer weather was going to prove problematic in terms of photos. As it turns out this is the worst May/June I've experienced in New York yet, dreadful weather at the moment.

No, the Furball dio has not been rebuilt. This is my unofficial contest tip line for the 2012 Military Building Competition, which I’m co-judging. Please note, there is no formula to guarantee a win in any contest. These are just a few tips that I have discovered through experience and/or observed in others’ successes. Some of these are generalized, while others are more specifically slanted to one category or another.

- Be patient! This seems to be especially problematic for the younger builders out there. Rarely does a masterpiece come together quickly. And don’t take this to mean only large MOCs. Minor details (or lack thereof) will shine all the brighter on a small build. It will not be perfect the first time around! In fact, even if it looks good to you after you finish, your thoughts might not be the same the next day. I recommend setting your MOC aside for a couple days after you complete it. Build on something unrelated, or read a book, or go for a hike. Then come back to your MOC and re-evaluate. Try to remember your goals from when you started. Did you meet them? Did you exceed them? Most of all, are you still satisfied? If so (and it may be precisely so) then take some pictures and post it! What we see too much of, however, are mediocre MOCs being posted mere days after the contest announcement, because people got over-excited to put it out there. You’ve got two months. Use em’!

- Quality over Quantity! We all admire someone who can build prolifically (I certainly wish I could), but your chances don’t improve merely because you enter every category. The devil is in the details, and detail can be hard to achieve if you’re rushing to build more entries than you’re able.

- Speaking of details, try to include details you don’t expect anyone will notice! I’m not joking here. Your viewers may indeed not detect them, but if they do, it will reinforce the fact that you worked hard and put a lot of thought into your build. How often do you see a note on some tiny feature of a MOC pointing out how amazed people are that it was included and/or achieved in Lego form? Often it is the minutest details that separate a great MOC from a good one.

- Don’t be afraid of new scales! You’ll notice that only four of the ten categories say they must be built at minifig scale. Middle-East Aircraft, Drawing Board Armor, and Forced Perspective can all use minifig scale or, if you so choose, abandon them entirely. You may notice my dio above includes nothing remotely near minifig scale. Nor (arguably) does –infomaniac-‘s recent masterpiece, while great builders like Ralph often go larger than fig-scale to maximize detail. Minifigs have a special place in all our hearts, but they can also be constraining. I’m not trying to discourage fig scale, but rather to encourage more variety and maybe a little outside-the-comfort-zone experience. I didn’t expect the feeling when first I tried microscale, but abandoning the minifig can be surprisingly liberating (yeah, yeah, insert bra joke here). So toss your figs aside and join the movement!

- Microscale doesn’t necessarily mean small! This is a common misconception for those still struggling to break the bonds of the minifig. A successful micro build often won't fit in a quaint 8x8 footprint - in fact it may not feel micro at all by the time you're done. It took me a while and some very mediocre micro MOCs before I actually internalized this lesson. The real trigger for me was building at a set scale. Now when I build a micro aircraft, I know I want it to conform to a 1:100 scale, which means my parts selection is dictated by the scale, rather than the scale being dictated by the parts I happen across. I know this sounds a little silly, but I think it’s a mindset that helped me. Note that I’m not trying to dictate a scale to others; I know some builders who are just as comfortable at 1:80. And if you’re going for a Spruce Goose, 1:150 may make it more manageable. Just realize, the smaller scale you work with, the harder it is to duplicate telltale details. Find what works for you.

- Don’t lean on your Brickarms! We all know and love the cute little weapons, but they net you precisely zilch if you try to center your MOC around them. This is a building competition, after all, not a display-custom-parts competition. Brickarms will do nothing to prop up a weak build.

- Hire a landscaper! No, I don’t mean someone to trim the hedges while you build. Diorama MOCs live and die by their terrain. Throwing a bunch of figs and mechs on a baseplate will not win you any acclaim. Lego is a visual medium, and when it comes to dioramas, the eye tends to be pleased by changes in elevation – especially changes of the not-so-rectangular variety. I know this can be parts intensive, and every time I build a dio, I feel like I’m scraping the bottom of my bins, but it’s always worthwhile. It also takes some planning, especially if you’re creating "negative elevation" (foxholes, trenches, etc. - Pepik’s MOCs always spring to mind), but again, this goes back to the note on detail – everyone will know you put a lot of work into that sloped landscape with a 4-brick-deep bomb crater blown in the middle.

Another way to look at it: try to beat the Castlers at their own game. Castle MOCs usually have to stand on the basis of their terrain and structures, rather than action. Build a dio on par with a great castle builder, and then add your action, and you know you’ve done something great!

- Don’t be afraid to rebuild! This is another habit I had to ease myself into. It seems to be especially true of vehicle MOCs. You’ll invariably notice some deficiency in your build that requires a change somewhere deep in its core (especially annoying when that’s a technic frame). You know the new detail (again with the details!) will necessitate an utter dismantling of the MOC to make room. So this time rather than just shrugging and saying “oh well,” take some reference photos (or if your collection allows, build a parallel core) and rebuild. 99% of the time, the result will be a markedly improved MOC.

Whew, all that sounds like a lot of work! Well, it probably should. After all, your fellow competitors are working hard to beat you. Sun Tzu wisely said, “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” A winning builder sees his successful model in the early stages of building.

Ok, enough philosophy. Feel free to ask questions, either here or in the official FAQ thread. My last, and perhaps most important piece of advice – despite my tl;dr essay about hard work, frustration, and challenges – is to enjoy yourself! Lego building is about having fun!

Ordem: Psittaciformes

Família: Psittacidae

Nome popular: Arara-canindé

Nome em inglês: Blue-and-yellow-macaw

Nome científico: Ara ararauna

Distribuição geográfica: Do Brasil a América Central.

Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), photographed at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, in Belém-PA, Brazil.

Following, a text, in english, from thw Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia:

Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna)

The Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), also known as the Blue-and-gold Macaw, is a member of the group of large Neotropical parrots known as macaws. It breeds in forest (especially varzea, but also in open sections of Terra Firme) and woodland of tropical South America from Trinidad and Venezuela south to Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Paraguay. It barely extends into Central America, where restricted to Panama. It is an endangered species in Trinidad, and is on the verge of being extirpated from Paraguay, but still remains widespread and fairly common in a large part of mainland South America. There is also a breeding population in Miami-Dade County, USA.[1] It is therefore listed as Least Concern by BirdLife International.

It can reach 76–86 cm (29.9-33.9 inches) long and weigh 900 to 1300 g (2-3 lbs). It is vivid in appearance with blue wings and tail, dark blue chin, golden under parts and a green forehead. Its beak is black, and very strong for crushing nuts. The naked face is white, turning pink in excited birds, and lined with small black feathers.

There is little variation in plumage across the range. Some birds have a more orangey or "butterscotch" underside color, particularly on the breast. This was often seen in Trinidad birds and others of the Caribbean area, and appears to be due to environmental factors. The Blue-and-yellow Macaw uses its powerful beak for breaking nutshells, and also for climbing up and hanging from trees.

Breeding

The Blue-and-yellow Macaw generally mates for life. It nests in a tree hole and the female typically lays two or three eggs. The female incubates the eggs for about 28 days, and the chicks fledge from the nest about 90 days after hatching.

Aviculture:

At Walsrode Bird Park, Germany

Blue-and-yellow Macaws are popular as pets partly because of their striking appearance and ability as a talking bird; however, their large size makes accommodation problematic, and they require much more effort and knowledge from owners than more traditional pets such as dogs or cats. They are intelligent and social, so for someone who can provide for their needs, they make good and loving companion parrots. Blue-and-yellow Macaws bond very closely to their owners. They tend to be more aggressive during mating season, typically 6–8 weeks in the spring time.[citation needed]

Even the most well cared for Blue-and-yellow Macaw will "scream" and make other loud noises. Loud vocalizations, especially "flock calls", and destructive chewing are natural parts of their behavior and should be expected in captivity. Due to their large size, they require plentiful space in which to fly. According to World Parrot Trust, an enclosure for a Blue-and-yellow Macaw should not be smaller than 15 metres (50 feet) long.[3]

They require a varied diet; a seed only diet will lead to health problems such as vitamin deficiency. An example of a good diet would be a quality pelleted mix, in conjunction with a mix featuring seed, nuts, and dried fruits, with fresh vegetables (greens and roots) and fruits fed regularly; furthermore, it is quite common (and appreciated by the parrot) to partake with their human owners of safe foods like pasta, bread, etc.

It is important to avoid foods with high fat content (generally) while striving to provide a wide variety of foods. There are some foods which are toxic to birds and parrots as a group. Cherries and most other Rosaceae pits and seeds, avocados, chocolate, and caffeine are among the foods toxic to parrots. Chocolate and caffeine are not metabolized by birds the same way they are in humans. Rosaceae seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, and avocados contain persin which are both toxic compounds to birds. Safe foods include oranges, apples, grapes, peanuts, walnuts, and sunflower seeds.

Mrs. Flibble said I should shred some confidential stuff, lest it fall into the wrong hands. That would be... er... problematic and embarrassing - and not just for the llamas. Now normally I'm good at shredding, but today I forgot to heed the warning of "shred with a tie and you're dead".

It was going great, but just as I reached for the latest stack of llama sex orgy paperwork, my tie flopped into the diamond cut steel grinding gears of the shredder of death.

This is moments before my grizzly end.

Splendid.

A NYPD officer leans against a sunny wall during the 2022 “Columbus Day” parade.

Back in early October, following our New England fall color expedition, we spent a couple of days in Manhattan. The main reason was to visit family — since we were already on the East Coast it seemed like we should do so. But it was also an excuse to spend a little more time in Manhattan, and during a more pleasant time of the year than our traditional August visits. The city felt more and more like it was coming back to life. There was a street fair outside our hotel when we arrived, and since the last day of our visit coincided with a national holiday there was a parade.

It was what New York apparently still calls the “Columbus Day” parade, though that problematic naming is sometimes combined with “Indigenous Peoples Day” and/ or “Italian Heritage Day.” New York politics are fascinating.. I photographed the police officer during the parade. I actually made several photographs as he hung out against this sunny wall, alternately chatting up passers-by, watching the parade, and maybe just enjoying the warm sunlight.

Spanish slug during the evening walk. There were a lot of them!

The Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris) is a species of air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. This is a highly invasive slug species. It is often considered a pest, not only in areas where it has been accidentally introduced, but even in places where it is indigenous. The size of the adult slug is 80–120 mm. The colour of the Spanish slug is brown or reddish brown, or brightly orange. Arion vulgaris is considered among the 100 worst alien species in Europe in DAISIE European Invasive Alien Species Gateway. The main reason behind problematic invasions of gardens by the Spanish slug is that it has adapted to a dry climate, where most eggs will dry out before hatching. The slug lays hundreds of eggs so that at least some may hatch. Like all pulmonate snails and slugs, it is a hermaphrodite, meaning that one single slug can start an infestation. In recent years, it has been observed that the Spanish slug has bred with the indigenous black slug Arion ater to produce a more frost-resistant variety in the more northerly regions.

From the exhibition catalogue:

"During a trip to Europe, Liu Ruowang bought a Pinocchio toy as a gift to his child. After telling the story of Pinocchio, the words "puppet" and "lie" continued to torment him. In 2019, he began the sculpture group "Mr Pinocchio". The artist uses extraordinary spatial scale, full of symbolism and metaphors, to express problematic relationships in our modern society. With Pinocchio's character at the centre and a group of contemporaries marching unaware in the endless circle,

the manipulator and manipulated reverse their conventional roles. The soulless "people" have lost control over the soulless "thing". It is becoming impossible to jump out of the strange circle of control and manipulation by "things" in modern society where materialism and money worship prevail. The artist warns people about the seamless lies that encourage material desires, to shake off the shackles of materialism and return to the authentic state of life. Liu hopes to inspire people to think about the origin and nature of lies. Who is the puppeteer? Can manipulated people recognize the lies and, if they do, have they got the will to withstand the puppet's manipulation?"

The very first attempt of Eruei to build Aigara's personal automaton, its programming was defective, turning out so problematic that the Great Being was forced to leave his laboratory. Aigara and the Marendar Units arrived thousands of years later while searching for her father, and she discovered about the other Dolls after meeting this model. Her powers managed to affect the conduct problems of the Doll and Aigara made friends her, yet it decided to not leave the laboratory.

Candles lit in honour of the millions of butchered Bangladeshi's massacred by the Pakistani army and their cohorts during Bangladesh's liberation war for freedom in 1971.

The Shahbag Mass Movement of 2013 in Bangladesh began on February 5, 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with the demand of capital punishment for Abdul Quader Mollah and all other accused war criminals of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

On February 5, 2013, the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Mollah to life in prison because he was proved guilty of committing genocide, murder and rape (including rape of underage girls) during the liberation war. International human rights groups have, however, raised questions about the conduct of the tribunals.

Human Rights Watch has said, "The trials against (...) the alleged war criminals are deeply problematic, riddled with questions about the independence and impartiality of the judges and fairness of the process; and that they had found that "glaring violations of fair trial standards" became apparent in the course of 2012.

Mollah was found guilty by this tribunal of being behind a series of killings including large-scale massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka, which earned him the nickname of "Mirpurer Koshai (মিরপুরের কসাই)" - Butcher of Mirpur.

The movement began at the Shahbag intersection in the heart of Dhaka city. The intersection was soon referred by participants and media as Projonmo Chottor (প্রজন্ম চত্ত্বর), or Generation Square (English translation), which hints at the spontaneous protests and mass movement of youth.

Tens of thousands have been holding vigil at Shahbag demanding that they will not leave the streets until Mollah receives capital punishment.

In 1939, the now defunct Wayne Works of Fort Wayne, Indiana launched its first flying school bus. The operator required only an ordinary driver's license to fly the aircraft. No confining seat belts were required. Foul weather was no problem, despite the lack of radar or avionics; the plane boasted a 6% safe-landing rate which became a problematic factor in new bus contracts and contract retention for the firm in subsequent years. Wayne went out of business shortly after launching the flying bus.

Back to the Ventura pier, love the light although the processing was problematic because of it.

Carrying the big lenses is more problematic, my alternative kit.

Voightlander 21 mm and 90 mm lenses, and a Light Lens Lab Rigid all adapted from M mount. All E39 filter so only a single polarizer needed for all. Best of all it fits nicely in my beloved thirty year old Domke 5XB shoulder bag. This replicates my rangefinder set up of 30 years ago with a non-rangefinder camera that fixes the problem of challenging old eyes.

This set up will not do for animals and birds (big lens, 20 fps Nikon Z8 is my preference), but for scenery and tourism it will do nicely.

Stuart McClurg's 440 Maico, an alternative to his 250 Bultaco. The short gear lever on the Bultaco proved problematical leading to him riding the Maico in the later heats. The Ulster Classic Motorcycle Club's Dundrod classic scramble.

This set of 8 taken in a street called 'Undershaft'. I found that editing was problematic in trying to find a satisfactory composition . Tried some in B&W, but thought not work as not enough contrast, shapes etc.

Anyhow, these are the results, .

On the beach at Walton. There isn't much beach left at high tide.

I probably won't be posting much - or indeed doing much new photography - over the next few days while I build a new computer... I hope it won't be too problematic!

A feisty young bull elephant, in musth, makes his feelings known in the Marataba Game Reserve near Thabazimbi in South Africa.

Musth or must is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behaviour and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. However, whether this hormonal surge is the sole cause of musth, or merely a contributing factor, is unknown. Scientific investigation of musth is problematic because even the most placid elephants become highly violent toward humans and other elephants during musth.

from the assessment workbook for my bee keeping course

Very hard to remember these!

Not actually necessary in the course curriculum I think. but I thought I might just just take a photo and label it anyway and have it as a reference if needed in future.

the hind wing is behind the plane of the fore wing but it does introduce some vein like artifacts in the picture.

Figure 1.3.12 photograph of the wing: This is a photograph of one of my bees (dead). The forewing is featured, the hind wing has been detached and is in a focal plane behind the forewing and is out focus and difficult to see. It is not attached to the forewing.

The veins of the wings are the channels through which in the newly emerged bee, haemolymph was pumped through to inflate the wing. The hollow veins that are left have a distinctive pattern. Traditionally, before sequence-based DNA analysis became cheap and readily available, the study of this pattern and calculating things like “cuboidal index” was used in the study of wing morphometrics as a key phenotypic analysis method for indicating subspecies in honeybees. Although this is still practiced to some extent it is becoming clear that relying in wing morphometry to determine subspecies is problematic and potentially misleading and that any serious analysis has to be on genetic sequence basis

Here are a couple pictures of my entry to the Style it up! challenge. Not very good, and very problematic, but I guess I don't really care. I hope you enjoy! I have a few more pictures for tomorrow, really fiddling to see if I can strike an impressive look somehow.

The oldest part of the public Hofgarten was laid out as early as 1769. This makes the Düsseldorf Hofgarten Germany's first and oldest public garden.

The park has a total area of 27.73 ha, of which 13 ha are meadow areas.

The wild birds contaminate buildings and open spaces with their droppings. They are a big issue in this city. Especially problematic are pigeons and Canada geese.

At this place in the park, a few minutes earlier, some birdseed was scattered. Whether this was done by a city employee or a private person is not known to me.

With a solid half mile of 3-4% grade just ahead, this southbound WW&F Mixed Train is building momentum as it approaches the Boxed Pony Truss Bridge over Trout Brook. Without a running start, climbing the hill ahead would be problematic for even this 3-car train, especially if it were raining.

This long, telephoto image of WW&F #9 and her mixed train was captured from the south end of the Trout Brook Bridge during a September 2024 photo shoot organized by Dynamo Productions at the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum in Alna, Maine.
