Our old lightbox at The Sun is covered by about a year's worth of old newspapers and things, so in order to save myself from staring into the fluorescent ceiling lights for long periods of time, I thought I'd try to fire up the Flashlight app I had installed on my iPhone. Works like a charm!
PROTIP: Don't put your moka express on the stove for more than 30 minutes without putting water in it.
Not only will you not get delicious espresso, it will do serious damage to your ring!

#GoPro Featured Photographer - @nickkeating About the shot: This one was a collaboration between @aaronchase and I. It was the second night of shooting GoPro’s Bike Athlete Camp at @Northstar in #Truckee, California and we had tossed around the idea of playing with some long exposure night photography. By 11pm the moon had risen over Northstar’s summit providing us the ambient light needed to fill out the landscape. Along with our GoPro kit, we packed a small LED flashlight for mounting to Chase with the plan to record his moonlit line down one of Northstar’s flow trails. How the shot was captured: When we first found our location, we took a handful of test shots to dial in the settings for the scene - landing on a 30sec shutter, at 400 ISO and a White Balance of 3000K in Night Photo mode. After deciding on the angle we wanted to shoot from, but without a tall enough tripod, we looked to MacGyver and attached a Jaw’s Flex Clamp to the end of a tree branch which we held up by stacking a handful of large nearby rocks around its base. The camera framed up, Chase made his way up the trail to blast a few runs, and with the GoPro synched to a phone, we were able to trigger the camera as well as review and adjust after each shot. It was in this shot that Chase’s light trail made the most striking ark down the run, and the clouds opened up to allow the stars to pop through. The inherent experimentation of photographing by night builds an anticipation and excitement between each exposure, and once this image popped up on the screen, Chase and I were psyched for having made the effort to knock out a little midnight session. #ProTip: When shooting long exposure night photos, I always shoot at the lowest possible ISO for the scene as well as set my in-camera sharpness to Low. The low ISO will provide a much cleaner, less grainy image, and the low sharpness will reduce the risk of magnifying any noise. All sharpening you wish to add can then be done selectively in your favorite software or phone app.
It's Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and the start of Christmas shopping and the holiday season in the US.
Once our landlord turns on the Christmas lights on the fir tree outside, you know it's really happening. This is serious business!
Shot from the living room windowsill, 50mm lens at f/1.8 and SLR gorillapod. Protip: move bug screen before shooting (unless you are going for an interesting "waffle" effect).
("Bokeh (derived from Japanese, a noun boke 暈け, meaning "blurred or fuzzy") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field." [Wikipedia])

Crater Lake, rendered using Blender. Elevation data from SRTM. Prepared raster in QGIS.
Protip / memo-to-self: Blender will happily use geoTIFFs as heightmaps if you use "non-color data". This is far better than using PNGs (which at the moment seem to be limited to 256 values, so you get banding).
Using micro-displacements (adaptive rendering/subdivision surface) in Blender 2.79. DEM was 6000x6000; before adaptive rendering I could only get 2000x2000 with 8Gb RAM, if I was lucky (and patient).
Lit from a low angle, using Blackbody of 3500K to give a 'sunset' feel to the lighting.
The lake surface was added manually so the level might be a bit off ;-)

Hung a bag of water with a pinhole in it above a bowl.
Protip- stick a pen where the water is falling to grab focus
Originally shot for breadth, but I thought it fit better with my concentrations. Took 250+ shots and then narrowed down to about 20 good ones. I'd like to reshoot at some point with food coloring and have a different color in the bowl than the drops, as well as try for a lower angle, more flat with the bowl to see more of the drop.
This is my Ray Harryhausen tribute picture. Okay, admittedly it's more Ed Wood than Ray, but I thought I'd at least try a tribute to the Lord High God of special effects.
PROTIP: if you're doing a Paper Plate Flying Saucer on a String photo - do not pick the windiest place in the city to do it!
Note to self. Monday morning head over to Toshi station to pick up some chicken wire for those exhaust ports.
So, I'm mostly posting this to provide contrast to the photo I posted yesterday. Because most days aren't that bad. I'm functional. I haven't called in to work since my original bereavement leave (although my supervisor said if I need more time off, I can take it, which is nice, considering I've only been there 3 months). I'm not in denial about Casey, I think I go between shoving it down so I can do things and trying to accept it. But sometimes it's too big, and I cry forever. Which I know is okay, given that the girl I gave up everything for just died 2 weeks ago. (Hard to believe though, that it's already been 2 weeks.)
So I invited my mom over for dinner today, and basically used that as a kick in the ass to clean my apartment a bit. It wasn't dirty, just cluttered. I still had some boxes of Casey's things in the living room, and stuff like that. Today was the first truly nice day, so I opened my door and cleaned and dusted, and made soup. Which, by the way, was super good, and I'm gonna throw the recipe at the end of this.
People keep telling me to work out, or get back into a daily photography project. But really, it's really embarrassingly domestic things like cleaning and cooking that just settle me for a little bit. The angry feminist in me is irritated that something so stereotypical works for me, but the grieving sister is going to go with whatever works.
HERE'S THE SOUP I MADE IT IS TASTY.
Ingredients:
2 mild Italian sausages
Olive oil
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped. Feed the rest of the bunch to a hungry rabbit. Because celery is gross.
2 tbsp flour
Cumin, oregano, basil (Seriously, who measures spices, I don't get it.)
3 c chicken broth
1-2 potatoes, unpeeled and diced
1 can corn/ about 1 can's worth frozen corn
1/2 c half and half
1 c grated cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper
Squeeze the sausage out of its casing into a medium saucepan that has been drizzled with oil and set over medium high heat. Add onion and celery, and cook, breaking the meat up, until onion is translucent and the sausage is cooked.
Add the flour and spices and cook, stirring, for another minute. Stir in the broth, add the potatoes, and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat, cover, and cook 8-10 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Don't burn your hand on the steam when you uncover it. Protip, there. I should write recipes.
Stir in the corn, and half and half. Allow to return to a gentle simmer. Don't let boil. Add cheese and stir until it melts. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
You're welcome.

Tekapo derives from the Maori words for sleeping mat (teka) and night (po), so it seemed like a good place to spend the night. The ducks think so too. Now all we need is for Sierra Design to give us a new rain fly :P.
Protip: if you're staying at the Lake Tekapo Holiday Park, reserve one of these prime powered sites with the gorgeous lakeview! Worth the extra 10NZD over the tent sites, which are blocked by cabins and construction. And includes wifi.

I meant to take other pictures but the carpet in our building is being replaced so I dashed out and took advantage of the atypical backdrop...

In the end he doesn't look that different from a regular zombie, until you try to kill him with a crowbar.
Protip: It won't work.
Well yes, these are my protips, I had 4 others, but those are gone to my buddies.
Also getting some more rayguns, and a BLC Space Trooper.

Throw some extra es on there and it'll all work out.
Protip I do not like The Faerie Queene but the ladylove is named Una so there's that. Also I'm re-re-re-whatever-writing my doll story again and Françoise gets to be a fairy this time. Probably not the queen, though.
These aren't protips. They are overpriced production items. Toywiz, thanks a lot.

I weathered and un-masked the green bits, then applied the foil stickers and fitted them in place. Protip: Don't burnish them as the printing is not what you'd call robust!

Here's a money saving tip. If you have a jar of Doritos Mild Salsa Dip, you can use it as a pen holder. This becomes a cheap 3 GBP pen holder instead of a 1 GBP pen holder that you would normally buy elsewhere.
Not that this only holds up to 326 grams of pens (that's 28 stones and 2 witchfeet, converting for my backwater American friends). The jar must also be a mild Doritos salsa dip jar, anything else won't taste as nice.
PROTIP: If you want to do a photostory about your dolls hanging out on the roof, don't actually shoot it on the roof, because everything will come out all blurry because you are too nearsighted to operate the manual focus and the automatic can't handle flying dolly hair.
GoPro Featured Photographer - @nickkeating About the shot: Day two of the #GoPro Athlete Camp this year, we spent most of the afternoon paddling Bow Lake in the northern reaches of Banff National Park, Alberta. Like many of Banff’s glacier fed lakes, the water is a brilliant turquoise and even in the late summer hovers around 10 degrees above freezing. Atop our boards and wearing full wetsuits we were more than warm, but @izzi.gomez and I had a few shots in mind that required we jump in. How the shot was captured: Armed with an armada of #HERO4Blacks, Izzi and I paddled our way out to the middle of the lake to get some distance from the shore. Along with some board and paddle mounted shots, our goal was to nail a few over/under moments that captured at once the incredibly clear water and the fresh dusting of snow that had covered the peaks around us. Despite the slower action, I relied on 30/3 Burst mode throughout the day to ensure I nailed the perfect moment. With the choppy, wind swept water constantly crashing against the lens, the extra frames also helped in choosing the one instant in which Izzi’s expression and interaction with the water came together perfectly. #ProTip: Color has perhaps one of the strongest impacts on our initial reading of an image - and with that bright orange wetsuit, Izzi instantly becomes the focal point, letting the rest of the scene slowly unfold in our periphery. Use color to not only make an image more dynamic, but as a tool in directing the viewers eye through a scene.
The storm that blew in over the ocean intensified during the night -- steady rain, and I think the news reported gusts over 100kmh (protip: rain slamming into your hotel window at 60mph is not the best white noise machine). As we headed south down the west coast of the southern island, we stopped at a few random beach areas to take pictures of the remainders of the storm/the leading edge of the next one -- fortunately, we did not experience any crazy gusts like that while driving!
Yes, this is my brickarms collection. I went to Brick Fair with The Brick Bomb so thats why i got so much more.
Protip: the thin material makes it easy to wash in the sink and it hang dries in 3 hrs in high humidity (I also recommend Turkish towels!)

Lancer Tactical Rubber M9, Killer Kitty Patch, Phantom Gear triple open-top mag pouch, and five Elite Force 140rd mid-capacity clipazines. Also pictured is my Emerson JPC and ARES "Evike Airsoftcon" M4.
Quick Review on Midcaps:
Excellent for the price. Generous capacity, and once broken in they feed like a dream. Polymer construction might not please everyone, but these mags won't weigh down your gear as much as metal ones. They work amazing in both my M4s, I highly recommend these midcaps.
PROTIP: Don't load them to full capacity, as the spring won't have enough tension to feed all the BBs and you will have frequent misfeeds - I only load them to about 100 rounds (or one speedloader's worth of BBs), and there are no hiccups whatsoever.
