Pues para esta foto he hecho artesanía fotográfica. Aunque hubiese podido coger y tirar de Photoshop para añadir, con un croma, la persiana y el neón del fondo, decidí que no quería, en honor a cómo se hacían las cosas antaño, así que me forcé a usar el mínimo procesado posible (el blanco y negro, ruido y poca cosa más). Finalmente, por temas de luz y demás, tuve que oscurecer ciertas zonas que quedaban demasiado vistosas, pero a la postre es un procesado menor.

Para ello, realicé un fondo con unas cuantas capas de Photoshop, texturas, pinceles, capas de ajuste y un texto con silueta de chica facilona trazado con Illustrator para generar el neón. Puse esa imagen como fondo de escritorio en el portátil, que conecté a la televisión por HDMI a modo de fondo para la foto.

Asimismo, para las persianas, recorté una hoja de cartón pluma blanco en tiras (no muy precisas) de unos 3 cm de ancho y luego las cosí por los extremos con hilo y aguja. Até ambos extremos de los hilos a un palo de escoba que pasé a modo de contrapeso detrás del televisor para que la persiana quedase por encima del fondo, y me puse, sentado en el suelo, frente al montaje, disparando la cámara con el control remoto.

Como el comedor de nuestra casa no es que sea muy amplio, tuve que desplazar el sofá (a casi la 1 de la madrugada) para que el 50mm de la cámara estuviese lo suficientemente lejos del televisor para que cupiese entero.

Shakespeare & Hathaway - Private Investigators is a comedy-drama mystery television series set in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is produced by the BBC for afternoon broadcast in the UK by the same production team as Father Brown, The Coroner, and WPC 56.

Ex Detective Inspector Frank Hathaway, now a struggling private investigator, meets Luella Shakespeare, hairdresser, when she employs him to check her fiancé she met on-line. They are thrown together when her husband is murdered shortly after they are wed despite Hathaway's findings her husband is a con-man and she is suspected of murder after having been robbed of her savings from the sale of her hairdressing salon. Upon solving the case she uses her recovered savings to buy into his business.

Suspecting her fiancé, Clive, is having an affair Luella Shakespeare employs Frank Hathaway to investigate. Ignoring his findings she marries and shortly after the wedding at a hotel he is murdered with hairdresser's scissor's, and her savings taken. Together Hathaway and Shakespeare find Clive was a bigamist with an accomplice; an accomplice with an alibi. The investigation returns to the hotel and one of Clive's previous wives.

The only illumination in this scene is what you can see emanating from the flash on the camera I'm holding, which is Paul's; my camera took this actual picture from a tripod (hmm, that's Paul's too). (I'm not sure whether his memory card is still full of blurry close-ups of a wine glass, haha!)

This is Harris Beach in Brookings, Oregon, the office of Richard, a private investigator. Originally from Washington and having lived much of his life in Crescent City, California, Richard had recently retired as a Sergeant in the Prison Service, "I was getting too old, and the job's changed, the prisoners just don't have any respect for authority any more." He'd moved to Brookings ("Taxes are much lower in Oregon!") and had set up as a private investigator. "This is my office," he explained, "I have an ocean view, when clients ring up I tell them the noise in the background is the sea, my office is on the beach. They say 'what you can see the beach from your office' and I tell them 'no, my office is on the beach'" but I tell them my fees don't reflect it" and he laughed.

His phone rings and he excuses himself and answers. I step away a short distance to allow him some privacy and it is clear this is a business call. I can't hear the detail but he is clearly reporting on progress and then makes an appointment to relay his findings.

After his call, we continue to amble along the beach. We discuss the trip, where I've been, where we are going next and he mentions a few things to look out for. At various intervals he pauses and roots around in the sand with his stick. "I'm looking for agates" he says, "they wash up here from somewhere up North. I got a whole jar of 'em at my house." With this small comment, my eye is drawn to the massive variety of different colours, shapes and sizes of pebbles, every colour imaginable, rough, smooth, small and large, dotted on the sands.

I asked him when was the best time of year to be on the beach. He pondered and then said "Winter. When the storms come in off the pacific and the sky is black, the waves are thundering and the sea boils. Yep, we get some amazing storms."

By this point we had turned and ambled back and with best wishes we parted company and I returned to Jeff and Kim. Richard continued to wander along the beach. Thirty minutes later we were all set to leave and as we set off, Richard walked by and I waved him goodbye, off on another circuit of his amazing office.

Kim told me she preferred a tighter crop on just Richard, but his office was so much part of his story, I wanted to show it. I'm sure many of you will have worked out the inspiration for the theme of the video I made on this beach.
