Designed by American George Clymer, this magnificent cast iron printing press dates from the 1820s - making it almost twice as old as the Library.
Printing presses revolutionised the spread of knowledge by enabling books to be produced faster and cheaper than ever before.
Just playing in the press room with the mixing of process ink. I used cyan, magenta, yellow and transparent white in this series.
NOTE: the ink shots are named for the order that I shot them. The higher numbers are the same ink, just more mixed than the lower numbers.
Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the Holy Roman Empire in 1440. The invention and spreading of the printing press is widely regarded as the one of the most influential developments in the second millennium AD. The reason for this was that the printing press allowed texts to be printing and distributed en masse, effectively perpetuating ideologies and ideas that invigorated thought and inspired political and social change.
