Behind the old building in North Melbourne, Victoria the actual school was located. It was used way back in the 70s when there was a four year apprenticeship to learn the trade of printing. It hasn't been used for over ten years and now with only a few weeks to go the four story building is being pulled down.
PTASHKY is the Ukrainian word for ‘birds’. The set contains different objects with images of peafowl, mallard and pheasant – distinctive birds from Ukrainian folklore and fairytales. This project was inspired by traditional Ukrainian stitching pattens which we reinvented and represented in a form of contemporary and meticulous graphic and binding.

I’ve avoided collecting small-scale maps but this is the best map in my collection … it’s a work of art. Every feature was hand-engraved onto a copper plate, in reverse. There’s a slightly odd cartographic mystery on sheet 11. If you look in the south eastern corner, below Southsea and Hayling Island, the neat line (map border) isn’t present. It is as if the finely engraved lines representing the sea have been allowed to spill out of the map slightly. There seems to be no cogent reason for it …

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, visual artist Sunaina Bhalla led a hands-on worksop and taught how to lay out and print using a stamping process. Participants got an overview of various contemporary applications of block printing and created prints using their own ideas about placement, color, and design.
