Helena Frances (Anders) Reimer Field's Ice Cream Parlor and Confectionary

Wheeler, Indiana

Date: Circa 1920

Source Type: Photograph

Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Unknown

Postmark: Not Applicable

Collection: Clarence and Helen (Reimer) Brown

Remark: Shown here is Helena Frances (Anders) Reimer Field at the Wheeler Ice Cream Parlor and Confectionary. Helena's first husband was Fredrich Reimer, who died in 1906 at the age of 38. Helena later married Robert L. Field. Helena was born April 29, 1871, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and died on March 14, 1953, in Wheeler, Porter County, Indiana.

The following newspaper item mentions the ice cream parlor in Wheeler and was published in The Vidette-Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, on August 18, 1936 [Volume 10, Section 3, Page 4]:

"At the present time there are three stores and an ice cream parlor. Wilbur's Grocery store was stated in 1919; however, in 1911 the building was built and used as a post office and telephone office. Later it was used as a printing office and store combined. It has been run by the Wilbur family since 1919. John Reimers owns the building at the present time. Our present ice cream parlor was established thirty years ago; however, it began thirty-seven years ago as a meat market and grocery store combined. Seven years later it became an ice cream parlor, but has been improved continually until the present time."

I am a lot of things. One of things I am most proud of is that I am a Andy's wife. He is kind, funny, passionate, smart, hard-working and pretty darn cute. He is also a printer.

I am hoping that me and this printing press might turn him on a little!

Our old Canon printer was failing and yesterday we got an all-in-one printer-scanner. Millie just loves printers and she patiently sat by it, whilst I was going through all the set-up routine to get it printing wireless. When Millie hears a printer firing up she will race from anywhere in the house to jump up and gaze adoringly at it. We have to put a hand in front of her when it is printing, to stop her batting the paper. She is also fascinated by double-sided printing and gazes up inside the printer when the paper goes back inside to print the second side! Madam Millie does make us laugh! more fun was had with her climbing inside the printer box and packing materials.

The printer was going to go on a shelf but the amount of space and the fact that we are both right handed allowed us to keep the printer on top of the desk.

A young photographer captures the moment at the 27th Annual Chicago Tribune Printer's Row Literary Festival. She came up kind of close behind me at the lit fest and took a pic of my dreadlocks - I'd love to see how the pic turned out.

My printer died a sudden, unexpected death yesterday, so today I bought a new one. (The old one was 9 years old so I didn’t feel too bad about it.) Gary the computer nerd is going to help me get it set up.

Our heavily-stickered printer made the move ok.

Several tech people have been up here trying to repair this thing, but no one has succeeded yet.

We bought this printer's tray about 5 years ago from an antique shop in St. Jacobs, Ontario and have gradually been filling it with little bits of things that we find or have had stashed away. Some on them are old, some are new, and most have a story behind it.
