In August 2023, history was made. USAID’s Administrator Samantha Power officially opened the USAID Pacific Islands Mission in Fiji to help advance a more democratic, prosperous, and resilient Pacific Island region. The USAID Pacific Islands Mission is supporting the agency’s development work in Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The opening of the new Mission demonstrated the United States' commitment to partnering with the Pacific Island countries and fulfilling the commitment made by U.S. President Joe Biden in 2022 at the historic Summit with Pacific Islands Leaders. As USAID continues to expand its presence in the region, the Mission’s strategic approach is to listen, partner and deliver so as to help build resilient communities, resilient economies, and resilient democracies in relation to the region’s 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy.
