The oppressive visual onset of a storm is often occasioned by a rapid drop in barometric pressure. Studies have associated this drop with negative physical and emotional effects on living beings. Everything from rising blood pressure and headaches to restlessness and irritability. I suppose irritability is rather subjective when, for many people, we're merely attempting to distinguish between degrees. But I can attest to the restlessness as storms approach. It's based on an intense desire to experience the sensory aspects (winds, clouds, temperature change, advancing darkness, etc). It goes back to that boundary obsession I have, of standing on the edge between two realms. For me it's not enough to simply witness such an event. I yearn to document it, and each storm is like the first one. The excitement and the pull never seem to diminish over time. I think this is yet another opportunity to channel the energy from some external source and direct it into a creative bent. On this magical day I found myself in an old burial ground beneath an advancing system. The clouds seethed with dark energy that could be felt at ground level. The weather boundary echoed by the physical boundary, the old stone wall separating the dead from the living. Never felt more alive.

A bit sad, but I decided to sort through all the bottle tops I'd been chucking in a jar over the last few years. Only the unique ones here.

The morning after the Blizzard of January 2022:

There was a beautiful sunrise and clear skies to follow, making it a nice day for shooting. Temps were still in the teens and the wind was whipping. The power would remain out until just about 1:00 pm today, coming back just in time because the inside house temperature was barley holding above 40 degrees F.

I was once devoted to The Clash. In USA, I saw them play 5 times. The first time was one of the best, the last time was . . . . . . . depressing. www.thedailyswarm.com/watch/clash-pressure-drop-nissan/

The Rolling Stones plied the Blues, while The Clash emulated everything, and perhaps, tried to do too much. The Clash had better dub (“One More Time” with Mikey Dread), but The Stones have the better riff. Even Mick Jones says the first Clash album was the best.

Yet, Mick Jones still makes the grade:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=37MENt8cvRg

These two 45 rpms flatten the distinction between “Punk Rock” and “Classic Rock” as both sides of the fray try “the new stuff”, with neither attempt really coming off.

In fact the two songs are “oldies”, canonical Reggae for the connoisseur or the totally clueless.

Continuing the dissolution of genres, on a later reissue of “Run Rudolph Run” (the above single’s flipside) Richards replaced “The Harder They Come” with “Pressure Drop”.

I’ll give Keith the final word (on Reggae covers) as it is his single above (not The Rolling Stones): "I was convinced that (Start Me Up) was a reggae song. Everybody else was convinced of that. “It’s reggae, man.” We did 45 takes like that. But then on a break I just played that guitar riff, not even really thinking much about it; we did a take rocking away and then went back to work and did another 15 reggae takes. Five years later, Mick discovered that one rock take in the middle of the tape and realized how good it was. The fact that I missed “Start Me Up” for five years is one of my disappointments. It just went straight over my head. But you can’t catch everything." www.guitarworld.com/article/keith_richards_hot_stuff

My good friend Cary Wessel has been touring around BC for the last week and a bit attending weddings, riding bikes and killing time before his family reunion next weekend, and on Wednesday night he made his way out to the Best Coast to spend some time shredding the delightful Vancouver area trails.

Unfortunately, as often happens with the best laid plans, he was severely delayed by the traffic in Surrey on his way into town and got here much too late to meet up with Morgan for a lap of Fromme.

Thursday morning we woke up at a reasonable hour and made our way out to Horseshoe Bay to catch the Ferry to Gibsons / Langdale / Sunshine Coast.

We wound up pushing up Pressure Drop and trying to find the "White Trail" that makes its way back down and around to Sidewinder, but we took a wrong turn and wound up surfing on top of the rocks and branches down cable vision to Sidewinder. Then we rode up Sidewinder to the junction with Hwy 102 before turning back around and hitting up Sidewinder back to the pump track in the Sprockids Park.

Then after almost getting eaten by a giant dog when we took a wrong turn trying to find a trail that went from the park back down to the ferry terminal (which I've been searching for on every trip out there to avoid the coast back down the highway), it dawned upon me that the BC Bike Race MUST have a trail to take back down to the finish line at the ferry terminal (we saw the finish line as we got off the ferry, and crossed paths with some riders on Lower Flume on our way up). So after riding back into the Sprockids park we just followed the BC Bike Race flags and it wound up taking us on an awesome-ly lush and epic single track ride back into the first set of houses up the road from the ferry terminal.

Great success!

Also, Cary brought out his little Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 on the trip that shoots in a native 16:9 widescreen format. What I like most about the camera was that although it had it's own little point and shoot limitations, it still let you shoot in raw with full manual controls. Pretty cool. Here's Cary railing a singletrack corner cut through the lush ferns in the temperate rainforest of the Sunshine Coast. In case you can't tell, I've been all about these photos recently.

A bottle of Wu Gang Chops The Tree from Pressure Drop in London, England, at The Earl of Essex in Islington, London.

Pressure Drop, which commenced brewing in 2012, is one of many new micros to open up in London in the last couple of years. Their strange sounding Wu Gang Chops The Tree is a German style hefeweizen spiced with herbs. I must admit that this was a little too much for me, even though I love a good hefeweizen, it tasted like a weird mojito with its mint and lemon flavors.

Wu Gang is a chap from Chinese mythology and was sent to the moon to chop down a tree. It was a punishment though as the tree always healed straight away and popped up again so Wu Gang was on an endless task.

The beer is from Pressure Drop Brewing who started in early 2013 and partly celebrates the problems that seemed to be popping up for them. The phrase has started to get used a lot in the brewery, eg when faced with hand bottling of 800 litres of beer.
