Today, we visited the Whitewater Preserve, a wilderness area managed by the The Wildlands Conservancy. We took a ranger-led tour looking for wildflowers, of which we found an abundance. This plant, a brittle bush, was the most common. The yellow on the hillside is all brittle bush. And the mountain in the background is San Jacinto Peak. Last year, we took the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the top of that mountain (see the comments :-).

During our road trip last month, we made a stop in Jonesborough, the oldest town in Tennessee, and a place with lots of well-preserved history. It was the capital of the State of Franklin, which was never recognized by Congress, but existed for about five years in the 1780s before becoming part of Tennessee.
The 1778 landmark that you see here was the home of Captain Christopher Taylor, Revolutionary War officer and a State of Franklin leader. Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, boarded here in 1788 while practicing law in Jonesborough.

Last weekend we harvested the last of our lemons (see photo in the first comment) and we had to figure out stuff we could do with the bounty. This brought Jasper back to when he served in North Africa. He said the locals would preserve lemons with salt. So a couple of YouTubes later, we gave it a shot. They should be fully cured in about 4 weeks. I've never tried preserved lemons before, but they say that the rind provides a wonderful citrus umami to vinaigrettes, salads, etc.
(Jasper served in North Africa? Yes. He's a very worldly dog. He served in the Special Forces, so he can't really talk about his missions, but we're proud of his service)

Small nature preserve in Palmetto, Florida. Water levels are low in both lakes here due to the lack of rain in our area.

The Cosumnes River Preserve is a nature preserve of 46,000 acres (190 km2) located 20 miles (30 km) south of Sacramento, in the US state of California. The preserve protects a Central Valley remnant that once contained one of the largest expanses of oak tree savanna, riparian oak forest and wetland habitat in North America.[1] Agricultural development has changed the landscape from groves of oaks and tule marshes to productive farmlands.
The Cosumnes River is the last remaining free-flowing river in California's Central Valley, with the preserve located on the river's lower reach where it joins the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta tidelands. The area supports a diverse range of plant and animal life, including three species of oak as well as rare plants like the endemic northern California black walnut (Juglans californica var. hindsii).[3] Notable features include the sandhill crane fall migration and the Tall Forest in Wood Duck Slough. More than 250 bird species, more than 40 fish species, and some 230 plant species have been identified here.
Located on the bird migration route, the Pacific Flyway, the preserve is designated an Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy and National Audubon Society. Several rare birds, such as the Tri-colored Blackbird and the Greater Sandhill Crane, have been identified. Bear Rocks are a widely recognized symbol of West Virginia wilderness and among the most frequently photographed places in the state. They are a well-known landmark on the eastern edge of the plateau that includes the Dolly Sods Wilderness. They sit in a high-elevation heathland punctuated with wind-carved sandstone outcrops and is home to more than a dozen rare plant and animal species. Situated on the crest of the Allegheny Front, Bear Rocks afford vistas over the South Branch Potomac River. Visibility can extend eastward to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
The Bear Rocks Preserve is a 477-acre (1.93 km2) tract that is owned and preserved by The Nature Conservancy. Bear Rocks' natural heathlands and open grass balds were originally recorded in 1746 by a survey party that included Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson.
Bear Rocks is a remarkably scenic, windswept summit atop one of West Virginia's highest mountains. It is perched on a ridge of sandstone cliffs and is a rock outcropping on the Allegheny Front with a 2,000 to 3,000-foot (600 to 1,000 m) drop below that forms the Eastern Continental Divide. To the east, looking out over the South Branch of the Potomac River, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean via the Chesapeake Bay, there are breathtaking 35-mile (56 km) views where seven mountain ridges are visible on a clear day extending into Virginia. On the clearest days you can see Hawksbill Mountain and Stony Man, the highest peaks in Shenandoah National Park. To the west, water drains into Dolly Sods towards Red Creek, which eventually flows to the Gulf of Mexico via the Dry Fork River, Black Fork, Cheat, Mongahela, Ohio and Mississippi River.
