It's summer here in Bengal now.
With the Norwesters giving rain every now and then, it's high time for the Toads to breed. You can see hundreds of baby toads in our locality now.
They hop everywhere...some even enter our house. Some get hunted, some get crushed under our foot or the tyres of vehicles.
But they fight to live. Camouflaging themselves in the rocky surroundings, they learn the art of survival and wait patiently for the monsoons to arrive.

During an 8-hour layover in Bangkok, we decided to explore the city, and lucked upon a monk ordination at the Marble Temple. This event happens once a year. At least 100 men and boys from the north of the country were ordained. The ordinations were for periods ranging from, we were told, three weeks to a lifetime.

Part 1:
The front line had been quiet all morning. Our stiff resistance during the fierce fight the night before had forced the Amis to pull back sometime during the very early morning. We reorganized, rearmed, resupplied, and fixed ourselves into our defenses. This position was of value to command and we were ordered to hold it by all means possible.
At around 0940 the silence was broken by the recognizable rumble of American armor. The Amis must have regrouped in the morning and received reinforcements. We all scurried to our positions and crouched down, awaiting the attack. As the rumbles got louder our anti-tank units prepped their guns and got ready to fire at whatever toys the Americans had brought to play with.

In the Mardin bazaar, Turkey, a couple of olive vendors prepare çakıstes (cracked olives). Green olives are cracked with a mallet so they split, but don't loose the stone. This helps curing brine flavoured with fresh herbs to penetrate the fruit. Note the jars of çakıstes, centre frame, which are eaten as meze (appetizers). The men allowed me to practice cracking a few olives, hence the smiling faces.
