Great Blue Heron perched above the waters of Choctawhatchee Bay preparing for imminent departure.

Corylus avellana 'contorta' in our garden.

It's over - the summer visitors collect on the telegraph wires in the dawn light, and prepare for their long journey to southern Africa. The barn swallows are a regular feature under the eaves of our house - and countless other nesting sites in the farms and houses around here. A marker of the change of the seasons, as regular as harvesting.

Happy Telegraph Tuesday 😊

An Atlantic puffin stands on the edge of a rocky cliff at Sumburgh Head with its wings partially raised, preparing to launch off the cliff down to the water. The bird stands with its orange feet on a small grass tuft and is surrounded by blooming sea pinks. Shetland, Scotland.

Coming to a stop just short of the South switch at Wasa, the way freight's conductor exits the comfort of his freshy refurbished SD40-2 to line the switch for his route which had been previously left in reverse by a meet that took place earlier in the day.

Adult Kingfisher preparing his catch.

Let the show begin. Alice in Wonderland this summer's show for the New York Botanical Garden opens Saturday. It looks like it’s going to be a very good show.

It's funny I'm uploading this one of the two I took of the balloons heating up to lift off. Every time I though of one pic over the other I keep switching on which one to put up, so I guess I'm just going to stick both up and let them duke it out in the views/favs. Let the battle begin.

Das Vorziehen in der Wärme der Pflanzen, die später ausgebracht werden sollen, lässt schon mal die Vorfreude auf die Blumen aufkommen. Hier die Bartnelken.

I am getting ready for this festive season! Are you? :)

And it might come by next week! Actually the planning for this came in late May when it looked like there might not be much grass for the cattle. Thus farmer planted more widely. The rains came a just the right time and a fairly significant crop was taken off this field.

Stu brought this Basil home today. He was jamming with some friends and one fellow who he was playing with is an Entomologist (he's a bug expert) who gave Stu this basil. The basil was grown at Cornell University. They were doing experiments on using different forms of light to see how plants react to it. I used the Basil to make some Walnut Pesto.

Pair of SD50-2s (5018, 5019) head back to Port Clinton and will relieve the steam engines for the final dash to Reading. One of the crew members is preparing to dismount.

In this area we first see them (3rd generation) in July. They lay eggs in the milkweed and the 4th generation emerges around late August. Last year there was a terrible infestation of oleander aphids in the milkweed, which did a lot of damage not only to the plants, but also to the monarch caterpillars. I feared there would be none this year, and that it might take years for the local population to recover. Then a lone female showed up in July. The milkweed is healthy this year and her offspring are now flying and feeding, getting ready for their part in the epic journey.

... sorry, but i really love this one....

What a mess it is to get new flooring. Everything is in such disarray!!! Hopefully it will be beautiful when it is all put back together.

This ship could not fit under the bridge, so it docked at Circular Quay Sydney where we actually sailed out of 8 days earlier. Our ship being a touch smaller was able to fit under the bridge, trust me only by inches, to dock a bit further away. It was a sight to see this big ship so close on the waters and exciting actually going under the bridge. I was sure the tall pieces on the ship were going to get hooked up in the bridges structure, but deep down I knew the captain knew what he was doing

I love watching gulls, they can be so very entertaining :-) I didn't even need to give them chips hahaha.

I arrived home safe and sound yesterday evening. I miss dad already, i had such a great time seeing him and also going down to Victoria to see grandpa and his partner was great too. The only thing that wasn't great, the complete opposite of great actually was of course... the bush fires.

Mum is very pleased i am home, nothing compared to the cat though. He's super happy i am back!

Doh! Now how did that Moab book get in there. Freudian Slip, perhaps.

Hope you like this one of a goldfinch. Was hoping for an inflight shot, but this surpassed my expectation.
