As predicted it was cloudy... in fact it was "light fog". I gave up waiting (and hoping) and headed 40 miles east where I managed to find a small gap in the clouds to photograph the eclipse in a tiny village with a nice old church. This explains the crosses.

I took this with my 10 stop Lee Big Stopper filter as it seemed the best way to deal with some of the risks of looking at the sun. I also used the LCD display.

A Gallic druid predicted the meeting of Mona Lisa and Napoleon, 400 BC. This memorable meeting took place at Waterloo, in 1815 and so Napoleon received from Leonardo an object capable of dynamizing communications. I am not authorized to say that it was an Apple cell phone designed by Da Vinci and made in China. And also thee was a revolutionary copy of Charlie Hebdo newspaper of which Mona was editor since remote times. Buthow is contact between people from different eras possible? Well, Albert Einstein said that time and space are relative, but what really intrigues me is: why did Napoleon always keep his hand inside his coat ?

The weather was predicting clear skies in the morning, so my brother-in-law Bob and I headed up to Talkeetna to photograph the sunrise and see Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America. It sure was a good morning for it, with pink light hitting the mountain range and ice flowing down the Susitna River with mist rising from it. It was 6 degrees that morning, and my fingers hurt when they were thawing out, but it was worth it to see this sight. I could have raised the ISO to freeze the flowing ice's motion, but prefer the sense of movement. Talkeetna, Alaska, USA, November 2021

As predicted the hole in the sky let the arctic sun come flooding in. The whole feel of Lilliehöökbreen changed from brooding, steel grey to pure light, whites and blues. I made the decision to remain on the Plancius for just this zodiac trip out to see the glacial front due to my travelling partner feeling unwell and because the views over the glacier and the fjord I predicted would be "Otherworldly" as the sun appeared, I was right!

Surprise!

The predicted snow actually happened!

There hasn't been significant accumulation thus far, nor is there likely to be.

The street was too warm to even get a dusting.

Of course northern New Mexico and the higher elevations are another story. By the time the snow stops tomorrow morning some places up north or at higher elevation could have up to a foot.

The main portion of this storm is heading into the mid-west and is described as a possible mega-storm.

Another break in clouds on the flight to work. Thanks very much for faves and comments!

Wilbur's been wrong every year since God knows when, but we love him anyway. I think when it's too cold, he likes to sleep in, and when it's too warm, well, he likes to sleep in.

Truth be told, I've not spoken to anyone who has actually seen Wilbur before May first and then no one is quite certain its really him.

Snow is predicted tomorrow, will the plows be out?! Hah...not likely...so hedmre is another from the tops of 2018 folder and the one and only time I shot these moving.

The third Nor'Easter in a week dumped 18 inches of fresh snow on the Boston area during mid-March 2018. This misfortune for the citizens of the Commonwealth provided some good fortune to those of us of the rail persuasion in the form of a Keolis plow train operating on the MBTA northside routes.

A pair of rebuilt original ex Boston and Maine double track Russell snowplows dating from 1949 bracketing GMTX GP38-2 2636 (blt. Sep. 1970 as straight GP38 BO 4809) are on home rails as they work westbound on the former B&M Fitchburg Route mainline near MP 9.8 in this view looking west from the Jackson Street overpass. In this going away view the work train is crossing Elm Street and passing the historic Waltham Tower. The tower was built in 1928 and had call sign OD, and when retired 85 years later in June 2013 it was the last manned interlocking tower left in service on the MBTA system and in the state as a whole. The tower was also the location where the Watertown branch joined the mainline, once a through route from West Cambridge to here it was cut in the middle in 1960 and lasted decades longer as the Watertown Branch on the east end and the Bemis Branch on this end, though all of it is now removed.

Castel dell'Ovo is a seafront castle in Naples, located on the former island of Megaride, now a peninsula, on the Gulf of Naples in Italy. The castle's name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation in the Middle Ages as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future. In the legend, Virgil put a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications. It remains there along with his bones, and had this egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disastrous events for Naples would have followed. The castle is located between the districts of San Ferdinando and Chiaia, facing Mergellina across the sea.

The Castel dell'Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples. The island of Megaride was where Greek colonists from Cumae founded the original nucleus of the city in the 6th century BC. Its location offers an excellent view of the Naples waterfront and the surrounding area.

In the 1st century BC, the Roman patrician Lucius Licinius Lucullus built part of the magnificent villa, later called Castellum Lucullanum, on the site.

Fortified by Valentinian III in the mid-5th century, it was the site to which the last western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was exiled in 476. Eugippius founded a monastery on the site after 492.

The remains of the Roman-era structures and later fortifications were demolished by local residents in the 9th century to prevent their use by Saracen raiders. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans in the 12th century. Roger the Norman, conquering Naples in 1140, made Castel dell'Ovo his seat. The importance of the Castel dell'Ovo began to decline when king Charles I of Anjou (r. 1266–85) built a new castle, Castel Nuovo, and moved his court there. Castel dell'Ovo became the seat of the Royal Chamber and of the State Treasury. It also served as a prison. In 1191, Empress Constance of the Holy Roman Empire, daughter of Roger, was captured during her struggle with her nephew Tancred, King of Sicily for the crown of Sicily, and Sicilian Chancellor Matthew d'Ajello wrote to Tancred persuading him to lock her in the island Castel dell'Ovo to be better-guarded and secluded from people, and wrote to nobleman Aligerno Cottone in charge of defending Naples ordering him to "ut imperatricem in Castro Salvatoris ad mare benè custodiat" (guard the empress in "Castle of the Savior" (i. e. Castel dell'Ovo) in the sea properly). However, Constance was released the next year and finally became Queen of Sicily. In 1268, King Conradin was imprisoned here before his trial and execution. Also imprisoned here were children of Manfred, King of Sicily after his failure. In 1381, Queen Joanna I of Naples was also imprisoned there for a time after having been forced to surrender to her enemy Charles of Durazzo, the future Charles III of Naples, before her assassination.

The current appearance dates from the Aragonese domination (15th century). It was struck by French and Spanish artillery during the Italian Wars; in the Neapolitan Republic of 1799 its guns were used by rebels to deter the philo-Bourbon population of the city.

After a long period of decay, the site got its current appearance following an extensive renovation project started in 1975.

In the 19th century, a small fishing village called Borgo Marinaro, which is still extant, developed around the castle's eastern wall. It is now known for its marina and restaurants. The castle is rectangular in plan, approximately 200 by 45 metres at its widest, with a high bastion overlooking the causeway that connects it to the shore; the causeway is more than 100 metres long and a popular location for newlyweds to have their wedding photos taken. Several buildings are often used for exhibitions and other special events inside the castle walls. Behind the castle, there is a long promontory once probably used as a docking area. A large round tower stands outside the castle walls to the southeast.

Underwater archaeologists have discovered what appears to be a 2500-year-old harbor associated with the origins of the first Greek settlement of Paleopolis (which preceded the ancient city of Neapolis, now Naples) in the sea next to the castle. Four tunnels, a 10-foot-wide street demonstrating furrows consistent with cart traffic, and a trench likely built as a defensive structure for soldiers were submerged immediately adjacent to the castle. The discovery was announced in March 2018, after the September 2017 identification of the original port of Neapolis.

While it's not unheard of, it was still a rude shock. It was actually predicted but I didn't pay much attention. In a time of self-isolation I wasn't going anyplace anyway. :-/

As you can see on my balcony thermometer, it was cold enough to stick for a while. Luckily it did not. A couple of hours later the snow was all gone except for on hilltops and grassy lawns. A week later, we have highs of 18 - 20 degrees Celsius.

In anticipation of the cool front that was predicted for yesterday morning I made a trip out to Smith Point, a little peninsula that sticks out between Galveston Bay and Trinity Bay where the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory conducts three and a half months of raptor surveys each fall to monitor the migration of raptors as they travel south for the winter. At the peak of the migration it can be an unbelievable spectacle with tens of thousands of hawks in the sky above the “hawk tower.” It can be a little difficult to predict exactly when the big days will happen but if you are fortunate enough to hit the raptor jackpot, it will likely be something you will never forget.

Yesterday I didn’t hit the jackpot, but I was rewarded with some nice views of several raptor species. This young Sharp-shinned Hawk was one of several birds that made me glad I made the trip out. Even when the skies aren’t loaded with birds it is always fun to catch up with friends; the tower can definitely serve as a fun gathering place to geek out about birds.

John the Baptis - according to the Gospels: the closest predecessor of Jesus Christ, who predicted the coming of the Messiah, lived in the desert as an ascetic, preached and performed sacred ablutions (immersions) of the Jews for the cleansing of sins and repentance. These ablutions later became known as the sacrament of baptism. He washed (baptized) Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River, performing a ritual immersion of Him in the waters of the Jordan River. John the Baptist was beheaded at the request of the Jewish queen Herodias, whose will was conveyed by her daughter Salome (Matthew 14:8, 9). John the Baptist is considered a historical figure and most researchers consider the mention of him in all known manuscripts of Josephus Flavius's "Jewish Antiquities" to be an authentic text, and not a later insertion by Christian copyists.

Glossy Ibis

Scientific name

Plegadis falcinellus

The glossy ibis is a heron-like bird with a long, curving beak. They breed in parts of southern and southeast Europe and are occasional visitors to the UK. However, in recent decades sightings here have become more common, mirroring an increase in their breeding population in southwest Europe. Glossy ibises made a couple of breeding attempts in England in 2014 and 2016, with the first confirmed successful nest in 2022. It's predicted that breeding may become more common as climate change results in drier summers in southwest Europe and milder winters in the UK.

For the first time in seemingly weeks Friday was predicted to be perfect bluebird weather. Coupled with the news just released the day prior that the Pan Am Railways acquisition by CSXT had been approved I figured I should skip my beloved ex Boston and Albany for once and go to the old Boston and Maine before the changes come. While it won't happen overnight, it will be quicker than we expect before blue dip or ugly patched GEs are rare and intermodal trains on District 3 are but a memory.

With that in mind a look at the turnover revealed that a 22K was tied down at Fitchburg scheduled for an early recrew to bring into Ayer and that an EDPO was out of East Deerfield headed east and counterpart POED was moving with work at Graniteville before going west. Throw in regular AYPO building in Ayer and it was an unusual busy morning to the point that you actually had to make a choice what you wanted to focus on!

After getting some nice morning shots of tied down 22K and a few MBTA trains a friend in Ayer said POED was going west first before the two eastbound freights and he recommended this spot that I'd never shot at before. Here is a big POED manifest hustling west on Main 1 through the interlocking at CPF Derby (MP 42.8/322.8) behind three C40-8s. The spring buds are just beginning to offer some color to the scene as a harbinger for tbr vast changes this railroad will see in the ensuing months.

When people think of a wooly bear caterpillar they immediately think of the banded wooly bear, which according to folklore can predict the severity of winter weather. But there are actually eight or more species that could be called wooly bears. The wooly bear caterpillar is the larval stage of the adult tiger moth. I'm not sure which species of wooly bear/tiger moth this one represents. it was feasting on weeds in our backyard.

Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom for 2018 is predicted to be March 27-31 by the National Park Service. This photo was taken a few years ago - the cherry blossoms are beautiful even under cloudy skies.

Rain is predicted today here in the Chattanooga area (where I'm visiting my dad) for the first time in over a month, so that seems like a good time to post a bright sunny spider. This girl was lucky I spotted her web stretched across 11 feet of space between my dad's yard and the neighbor's! But then, she had a hand in making it obvious with her decorative tufts, a few of which you can see here. I'm posting a couple web shots, too, to show her extensive construction.

A toddle along the old Road to the Isles this morning before the predicted rain arrived mid morning. Saw (Smudge and Paddy first in that order .. poor old elk who is now half sighted didn't but could smell them) several red deer stags who themselves had spotted the collieitus going on .. one of the advantages of them is that it does make the deer unfailingly lock on you making for plenty of time to get a photo.

The impressive peaks of the north are calling.

In between snowstorms a possibly beautiful sunrise is predicted. You get up early and end up on a tiny beach, with snow, ice, sand, rocks, a little creek and ocean waves. All this surrounded by massive snowcovered peaks that turn pink, one after the other.

A little paradise.

I love places like that!

And conditions like these.

wandering through the quiet streets of alcudia, i spotted a man standing by his door. intrigued by the rustic entrance, i asked if i could photograph it. little did i know, this simple request would lead to a spontaneous portrait session inside his home. he revealed himself to be a painter and writer, living without the convenience of the internet or a mobile phone. the conversation flowed, and as he posed with the chessboard, i promised him a print of this portrait. in return, he said he would paint me. sometimes, photography opens doors to more than just images â it connects people in ways you can't predict.

A few days ago, I was hoping for snow. Now we got more than we were hoping for. Am guessing that we have about 1m ( ca. 40 inches) or more. The breaks between the snow showers/.storms are short and yours truly was stir crazy. So I had to head out there and try to get some captures before another blizzard hit again. Not many people out there as you can imagine. Hard to find a path to walk. This is one of them. And guess what? They predicted more snow.

You all have a great week ahead. Thank you for stopping by, having a look and possibly commenting, faving or inviting. Very much appreciated.

Timelapse video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD1cJzsTHMo

Since 2019, I've had the idea of photographing a moonbow on Yosemite Falls while a hiker created a light trail up the trail next to it. My first attempt at this shot was canceled by the pandemic, and then the next few years were too dry for good moonbows. This year's record snowpack finally enabled this photo.

I wrote a Python code to predict where and when rainbows and moonbows could be possible. This involved some fun spherical trigonometry and vector math that I hadn't needed in a while. I was worried that I might have made an error and a whole group of people might make a trip based upon my erroneous predictions. Fortunately, my predictions were accurate, the moonbow appeared right on schedule, and it lasted about 20 minutes when viewed from Sentinel Dome.

Jon-Kyle Mohr and I carried six cameras up to Sentinel Dome, across the valley from Yosemite Falls. Griff Joyce and Mark Vierra, of the Half Dome 50/50/50 adventure and the Yosemite lunar eclipse trip, hiked up Yosemite Falls at the right time. An 82% moon illuminated the scene.

Clouds obscured the sky above, blocking the moon, and filled the valley, blocking my view of the falls. Following some desperate prayers, they cleared exactly as the moonbow occurred. The photo was possible after all!

I stacked a bunch of 30-second exposures to produce the light trail. A single exposure was used for the moonbow.

So...Fog was predicted at Epping. So I made the two hour drive to get there and when I arrived there was none.

Not the end of the world, Ive learnt to take the weather forecast with a pinch of salt.

Still....had a nice morning there, and its a really lovely place to shoot. Mist or no mist.
