Tom Richard in the highly modified Griffon engine Unlimited Air Racer P-51XR; N6WJ, Race #38 "Precious Metal" taxis out for the start of Unlimited Gold Heat 2A on 15 September 2012. Richard's finished in 4th place at 425.216 mph.

 

Note: On Sept 8, 2015, after a fuel stop at Marianna Municipal Airport in Jackson County, Florida while in route to the 2015 Reno Air Races Precious Metal caught fire on the ground in the engine area and suffered moderate-major fire damage which will put it out of racing for the 2015 Reno Air Races. Pilot Thom Richards was uninjured in the incident.

 

This is from my latest shoot with Danielle. I'm really happy with how these photos turned out because I did all the hair and makeup myself :) I am up-ing my game a bit.

North American P-51D "Mustang" - "Precious Metal"

 

History

1944: Constructed as a P-51D.

Survived as a derelict center section that was an ex-MGM cockpit movie prop that had been obtained from the Tallmantz collection.

1988: Converted to a P-51XR by Whittington.

New construction number, 44-88, assigned to the airframe.

The ex-MGM center section was mated to a rebuilt wing of unknown provenance from Teeters. Also fitted with a Rolls Royce Griffon from the Miss Budweiser unlimited hydroplane.

1988: Assigned civil registration: N5483V

A P-51H tail borrowed from P-51D s/n 44-73518 c/r N5483V. It was flown with this registration, temporarily adopting the ID of this aircraft.

1988: First flight. Flown with the standard P-51H tail.

1988: Raced as #09, named Precious Metal.

1988: Crashed. Crash landing and badly damaged at Reno, NV.

1988: The P-51H tail was returned to USAAF s/n 44-73518.

1990: To World Jet Inc/Don Whittington, Fort Lauderdale, FL with new c/r N6WJ.

1990: Fitted with it is own P-51D low tail.

1995: Raced as #38. Raced at Phoenix.

1995: Raced as #38.

2000: To Lake Air Inc/Ron Buccarelli, Fort Lauderdale, FL keeping c/r N6WJ.

2002: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2003: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2004: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2006: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2007: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2011: To Mustang51 Llc, Kissimmee, FL keeping c/r N6WJ. Abandoned.

2012: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2013: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2014: Raced as #38, named Precious Metal.

2015: Damaged. Caught fire at a fuel stop at Marianna Municipal Airport at Jackson County, FL, while on the way to Stead, NV, for the air races. The airframe was severely damaged but repairable.

2020: To Mustang51 Llc, Kissimmee, FL keeping c/r N6WJ.

I wanted this for an upcoming blog entry. I made the "investment" years ago when I thought I'd "diversify" our investments. The result was one ounce. Woo hoo! And yes, I've put it back in the safe deposit box.

Republic National Bank of New York was founded by Edmond Safra in 1966. Mr. Safra was a Lebanese-Brazilian Jewish banker. His holding company Republic New York Corp. also controlled Safra National Bank.

 

Edmond Safra tragically died in a fire in his own home in Monaco in 1999. Soon after his death, the parties who inherited Republic National Bank sold it to HSBC Bank USA for USD $9.8-billion. At the time, Republic National had over 80 branches in the New York City area, the third largest branch network in the metropolis.

On May 26 I posted a photo of a gold mine in Mahdia, Guyana: now here's some of the stuff that came out of it, mixed with some chemical that causes it to cake and allows it to be formed into this little medallion.

 

A heavy little sucker--I'm bad at estimating weight, but I'd say at least 12 ounces, maybe more--but unfortunately not so small I could've slipped it into my pocket without being caught by a mine operative.
