Dan is this week's Postbac in the Spotlight. Dan is from West Hartford, Connecticut, and studied classics and philosophy at St. John's College in Maryland, graduating in 2013. He spent the next three years in China teaching English and learning Chinese before joining the program. He currently lives with half of the postbac cohort in a shared duplex in downtown Bennington, where he is valued for his unique perspectives, radical honesty, and often Zen-like presence (though the house dog sometimes begs to differ).

When did you decide you wanted to become a doctor?

“The moment I realized this would be a good career for me was when I was in the hospital with my grandmother who passed away last summer. I had always been interested in nutrition and longevity, but spending that long in a hospital as a non-patient, observing the doctors and trying to communicate with them to figure out what was going on, actually gave me the feeling that I would enjoy and benefit from spending a lot of time in that setting.”

Did your experience in China help shape your decision to pursue medicine?

“It wasn't the deciding factor, but I did learn a lot from my month spent shadowing at a Chinese hospital. Probably the most significant takeaway was that a US medical education has a lot of sway abroad.”

What brought you to Bennington's postbac program?

“I think what attracted me, and which has turned out to be true, is that this program is not so much about teaching directly to the MCAT as it is about getting a thorough crash course in science - which for me, as someone who's interested in the research aspects of medicine, has been really valuable. I also really like the small size of the program.”

Where do you see your medical career taking you?

“Ideally, I would like to be a combination of a practicing doctor and a researcher, so I'm looking into doing an MD-PhD program and focusing on aging research, or perhaps even being a doctor at a teaching hospital so I can integrate teaching, practice and research. I also intend to get involved in international medicine, as I'd like to be able to work in both the US and China.”

What advice would you give someone considering a postbac program?

“Again, I feel like this program is less about just teaching to a test and more about getting a comprehensive science education in a small classroom environment. So my advice is to make sure you know what you're looking for in a program. If that description sounds like what you're after, then this program is a great choice.”

Anything to add?

“Whenever I've discussed this program with my family, I keep coming back to this old saying: "Biology is just applied chemistry, chemistry is just applied physics, and physics is just applied math." I used to not really understand the continuity in that chain, especially with regard to chemistry, which seems to be most people's initial weak point in their science education. So one of the best things I've gotten out of this program is the ability to see that continuity: a sense of how physics, chemistry and biology are all a unified science, looking at the same phenomena from different levels. It's really blown my mind.”

Living at Maria Elena´s was very nice, everything thing here was amazing. She had hot water, wifi and the meals were great! My favorite memory of this trip was watching a C Section one of my first days in the surgery unit. The mother had polyhydramnios, so the baby had a severe breathing problem when it was delivered. After watching the delivery and watching the doctors try to get the baby to begin breathing, we sat with the baby in the NICU for hours watching the process of trying to get the baby to live and be okay. A few days later, we went back to the surgery unit and got to see the baby in the NICU and the baby was doing great and was going to get to go home soon. Also, working in Curaciones was amazing because I got to remove so many stitches and clean to many severe wounds that were overwhelmed with infections. It was extremely interesting all around.

"My homestay experience was great! One cannot go into a mission trip thinking it will be a luxury hotel or home. I had a great bed to sleep in with multiple layers made of blankets with 2 pillows. The food that was cooked for us was wonderful & safe for us to eat".

"The type of volunteer work that I was involved in was: visiting the orphanage, filling out an odontogram, performing prophys on patients, and restorations".

"One memory that I will always take with me will be the work in the orphanage. The girls were all very kind and appreciative of the work that we did with them".
