Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Mexican Painter

From 1926 until her death, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. Kahlo was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacán.

She did not originally plan to become an artist. A polio survivor, at 15 Kahlo entered the premedical program at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City. However, this training ended three years later when Kahlo was gravely hurt in a bus accident. She spent over a year in bed, recovering from fractures of her back, collarbone, and ribs, as well as a shattered pelvis and shoulder and foot injuries. Despite more than 30 subsequent operations, Kahlo spent the rest of her life in constant pain, finally succumbing to related complications at age 47.

During her convalescence Kahlo had begun to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, whose approach to art and politics suited her own. Although he was 20 years her senior, they were married in 1929; this stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics; she had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938. Kahlo enjoyed considerable success during the 1940s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 1980s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure.

Nick is this week's Postbac in the Spotlight. Nick went to high school and college in Rhode Island, graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 2015 with a major in philosophy and a minor in political science. Originally interested in law, it wasn’t until the very end of his time as an undergraduate that Nick realized he might want to work in medicine. Like many people considering medical school, the process of becoming a physician was at first overwhelming and felt like an impossible barrier. But after shadowing various physicians and learning about one-year postbac programs, Nick decided to delve into the process of becoming a physician at Bennington College.

What made you change your mind from wanting to become a lawyer to becoming a physician?

“During college, I was considering going into law and had an internship at a courthouse. That internship helped me to understand what the work of a lawyer is like, and ultimately I realized that I didn’t want to go into the legal field. As I was finishing my last semester in college, I started shadowing a primary care physician. I was able to compare the relationships between attorney and client and physician and patient, and I realized that the work of a physician suits my personality. Through shadowing, I came to really value the patient-physician relationship and the types of problems that physicians deal with daily.”

Even after you realized that you were interested in medicine, you were still hesitant to go back to school. What finally persuaded you to go for it?

“I started to volunteer at a hospital and I quickly learned that I wanted to be in that type of environment regularly. The hospital felt exciting to me. I continued to shadow physicians and specifically shadowed a pediatrician. Witnessing how physicians can advocate for patients and how they manage various important relationships had an impact on me as well. All of these experiences helped me make up my mind and finally encouraged me to start the premed track.”

Why did you choose the Bennington postbac program?

“Before deciding to do a postbac program, I was very hesitant because the process of becoming a physician felt overwhelming. I didn’t have a science background, and had specifically avoided science classes up until this point. I wanted to go somewhere that guaranteed me a seat in the classes that I needed, and I wanted to get all the prereq courses done in one year as a full-time student. Bennington was in the geographic radius I drew for myself, and as I learned more about the program I was attracted to the small class size and seminar style classes. My visit to Bennington’s campus helped seal the deal for me.”

What was your experience of visiting Bennington’s campus like?

“If you have the opportunity, I would recommend visiting. I was able to sit in on a postbac class, talk to students, and overall, get a feel for the vibe of the program. I could tell that the students were happy and cohesive.”

What have been the highlights of your postbac year?

“Academically, I am motivated by those around me and being part of the postbac group has been great. We have all done a good job of helping each other out. It is not a competitive environment—just the opposite in fact. I live close to Albany, so I have also enjoyed exploring upstate New York this year.”

What did you do during the winter Field Work Term?

“I worked at a medical group in Albany in the clinical quality department. The project I worked on gave me insight into the business of medicine, and public health. I think it was important to learn about the broader system that I’ll eventually be working in. The FWT was a great opportunity to gain further experience in healthcare, and I’m happy I took advantage of the time away from the classroom.”

Any parting words of advice for those considering a postbac program?

“It’s a hard process, but one that thousands of people go through and is completely doable with some dedication. This year, I have embraced learning how to be a better student. The postbac year is perfect practice for medical school. As a postbac, I’ve learned how to learn the sciences, and I’ve realized that this is not a barrier to medical school but the beginning of my medical training.”

Arrival Mission Midwestern University 17 Dental School Student to Peru Cusco. Student comments: "Our coordinator was helpful in guiding us and letting us know plans ahead of time. She was very helpful and organized in that way".

"My homestay experience was great! One cannot go into a mission trip thinking it will be a luxury hotel or home. I had a great bed to sleep in with multiple layers made of blankets with 2 pillows. The food that was cooked for us was wonderful & safe for us to eat".

"The type of volunteer work that I was involved in was: visiting the orphanage, filling out an odontogram, performing prophys on patients, and restorations".

"One memory that I will always take with me will be the work in the orphanage. The girls were all very kind and appreciative of the work that we did with them".

Haven't shot in awhile, so I just used this flowers, that I have no idea what it's named (to think I my premedical course was B.S. Biology), but interestingly, this has dried to preservation on its own that it doesn't seem to ever wilt away completely.

Launch of the First Undergraduate Neuroscience Major in the Country

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awarded Amherst a $400,000 grant to begin a neuroscience program that would combine premedical courses with those on electronics, psychology and more. The grant allowed Amherst to purchase new equipment, hire a neurobiology professor and recruit visiting faculty. After three years, the College funded the program independently.

A Broader View volunteers just open a new program in Honduras La Ceiba for PreMed and PreNurse students to work in Clinics and Hospitals, from 1 week to 8 weeks we offer translators for volunteers without Spanish and Immersion lessons.

Here is a synopsis of the program:

There are two public hospitals in La Ceiba which serve the most impoverished people in the community. For undergraduates on a healthcare career path this project will have you shadowing local doctors and nurses in their daily routines. Your tasks will vary depending on your current skills, experience and Spanish language proficiency.

Assigned placements include but not limited to:

· assisting with non-evasive procedures like taking vital signs, taking blood pressure, weight and height of patients

· Observation of cleaning wounds, removing sutures, draining abscesses

· Accompanying doctors on rounds and during consultations

This is a great chance to improve your skills, build your resume by learn about medicine in a developing nation and improve your Spanish. We recommend our language immersion option for those less than proficient in Spanish. However, translator are available ($15 per day) to help you get acclimated into the project. All volunteers need to bring their own supplies such as scrubs, gloves, mask, stethoscope.

College Professor

In 1935, Earhart became a visiting professor at Purdue University at the invitation of Purdue president Edward Elliott, an advocate of higher education for women, especially in engineering and science. Earhart, a former premedical student, served as a counselor for women and a lecturer in aeronautics. Elliott was also interested in supporting Earhart's flying career and convinced Purdue benefactors to purchase a twin-engine Lockheed 10-E Electra for her.

Amelia Earhart served as a counselor for women at Purdue University in 1935. (Purdue University Libraries, Karnes Archives and Special Collections)

high resolution-Amelia Earhart became a visiting professor at Purdue University in 1935 at the invitation of Purdue president Edward Elliott, an advocate of higher education for women, especially in engineering and science. Earhart, a former premedical student, served as a counselor for women and a lecturer in aeronautics-un-edited-Not part of my personal collection

“I came to Bennington in part because it wasn’t a typical place to study pre-med. After all, with an undergraduate degree in English, I wasn’t a typical pre-med student. Having gone to a larger university for my bachelor’s degree, I had to get used to being on a first-name basis with the faculty. Getting to know them well was a real strength of the program for me—if I had questions about the material or concerns about courses, I could go straight to the professor, and when it came time to write my letters of recommendation, I felt like they knew more about me than what my coursework and lab work showed.

“Bennington’s single greatest strength is the program’s commitment to go beyond rote memorization, to go past a formulaic understanding of basic science. In classes, in lab, and on tests, our professors insisted that we learn to understand the material intuitively, that we learn to think like scientists. The faculty really puts in the time with students to foster that level of learning.

“I loved my time on the Bennington campus. I was always amazed at what the student community was up to. When I needed to take a break from studying, I could go for a walk around campus, just as likely to encounter an outdoor performance as anything. On the weekends there were always bands playing, shows in the theaters, exhibits opening. I formed strong bonds in the undergraduate community that had nothing to do with my science study. It was a great counterpoint to my premedical education. Also, Bennington is a big orchard. Apples are free for four months out of the year.

“Bennington, Vermont, is a small town. That worked out well for me, because Bennington is exactly the type of place I want to practice medicine. My classmates worked at the free clinic at the Baptist church downtown, at a local retirement home, and at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center just a few miles away from campus. I shadowed a pediatrician in town, as well as Bennington’s campus doctor. It helped me to get a feel for what a community medical practice looks like, in ways that you just can’t find in city clinics.

“For Field Work Term, I went back to Texas to shadow physicians at a hospital near the Mexican border. I was also lucky enough to find a spot in a community health research lab in San Antonio, working on a study of domestic violence. The experiences I had over FWT did more than provide me with much-needed time to immerse myself in medical culture. They cemented my resolve to become a family practice physician and assured me that I was making the right choice for my career.”

We’ll kick off 2017 with a Postbac in the Spotlight story. Hope everyone had wonderful holidays! Here’s Edward, postbac ‘17’s story:

A long-term Los Angeles resident, Edward’s desire to prepare for medical school within an intimate class setting, and a single year, drew him to the hills of Vermont for the Bennington Postbac Premed Program. Edward has worked as a pastor for the past 18 years and is also concurrently finishing a PhD in Systematic Theology on the topic of human flourishing in the contemporary world. Eager to serve others in a practical and holistic way, Edward is pursuing medical training to deepen his ability to impact people’s lives both here and abroad. Edward describes his journey to Bennington and experience with the program, thus far, in his own words below.

Why become a doc?

“As a college student at UC San Diego, I was in a hurry to get out into the world and make a difference. Immediately after graduating, I spent a few years in Asia working with the poor trying to help break generational cycles of poverty by mentoring and educating the children of impoverished families. Upon returning to the States, I continued that work as a pastor to the best of my ability. But the longer I worked with people, the more I came to see my need for deeper understanding to genuinely help people find wholeness and wellbeing in their lives. My burning quest to be a better resource for the wellbeing of others was one of the key factors that led me to this medical path.

“The other major factor that galvanized my resolve to become a physician was the work of some of my close friends who have gained access to the most remote places and states in the world because of their medical proficiencies. As a result of this access, their ability to make an impact for lasting change in these societies is very real—certainly beyond what I can currently offer. I believe that a medical degree will open many doors in my work to help others.”

Why Bennington?

“The Bennington program was my first choice! I hadn’t taken a math or science class in 20 years, and I was looking for a program that would offer lots of personal time with professors. I was primarily attracted to the small class size, where I would be encouraged to ask lots of questions. And the one-year completion timeframe sealed the deal for me.”

Favorite part of the program?

“The small class and intimate setting of the Bennington program has truly met my expectations. Even with a few undergraduates in our classes, our classes have remained very small and personal. Contrast that with my undergrad years where some basic science courses had 500 students at a time, and lab time was strictly limited with little personal help provided. Other postbac programs I considered boasted of small postbac cohorts during the summer, but once the fall semester came around, the postbacs would be placed in classes dominated by undergrads. At Bennington, all of the classes feel designed with the postbacs in mind and the postbacs are the dominant presence in the classroom. There are just so many opportunities to use the labs, ask professors for support, and work with fellow students. I don’t feel like just a number at Bennington.”

Most challenging part of the program?

“Although the summer session was very intense, I liked focusing on just one class at a time (chemistry). I found the fall semester to be more challenging, as we took three classes at once. Physics, in particular, was a completely new topic for me that required a very different problem-solving approach than the absolute focus needed for PhD work. Physics requires a more flexible approach that takes some time and practice to master. Although that aspect of physics was challenging, I loved it because it was such a stretch from the way I had programmed my mind to operate for years. I believe it will better prepare me for the future with a variety of problem-solving techniques in my back pocket.”

Plan for Field Work Term and glide year?

“I will primarily be writing a chapter of my dissertation during the field work term and completing my PhD during the glide year, as well as spending time with my wife and four children.”

Pearls of wisdom for others considering this path…

“If it is your dream to become a physician, then you should find a way to do it. Being in my early forties, it is rather late to pursue this path. But I will bring a wealth of previous experience and perspective to my practice, and if I get to practice for the next 25 or 30 years, then it’s absolutely worth it. Because it is my lifelong passion to help others find wellbeing in their lives, I anticipate I will do that until my very last breath on this good earth.

“In order to succeed in a postbac program you need to love learning, and challenges, and be self-motivated. For somebody who is willing to grab hold of opportunities, Bennington offers a depth that is unique.”

Volunteer in Honduras La Ceiba Katherine Mullery for the PreMedical program. " I am in school right now, getting my bachelors degree in exercise science and plan to either go into Nursing or Medical school when I graduate. I have actually been looking for a program just like this for some time, a place where I can really be immersed in the Spanish culture, the language and the learning experiences that working in a hospital setting will bring me. I want to do mission work and work in orphanages in developing nations once I have my Nursing/Np or med degree. My dream is to travel Central and South American working with Nurses Without Borders or Doctors Without Borders in order to help as much as I can and use my education in the best way. I Want to be in this program to learn as much as I can about the medical field, particularly in developing nations and other parts of the world. Also, my boyfriend is from Honduras, nearby La Ceiba so that is part of why I picked La Ceiba specifically, as I will have the opportunity to meet his family after my volunteer trip".

The year was 1972 and I was in Islamabad taking time out from my premedical HSc studies during the break. Though the period of the break was very short, it was nevertheless educational. As my father was 'just' a Joint Secretary at that time, being a Member of the Central Board of Revenue, we lived in an 'I' type house. Those houses are the ones near Kohsar Market, over which secretaries routinely fight nowadays. Some Additional Secretaries also preferred to live in those houses, while most secretaries and above opted for private houses.

An exception was Health Minister Shaikh Rasheed who lived down at the end of our lane lending dignity to the street with a national flag on his house. Minister Rasheed spearheaded the generic drugs scheme long before Alma Ata in 1978. Next door was a close friend of my father who was Joint Secretary Kashmir Affairs. That office constituted the reporting authority for the President AJK or at least that's what people think. A big occasion in the house was when the Secretary Interior called.

One day there was a small dinner party next door and there were just four or five of us. A gentleman I did not know but who later became Chief Secretary of a province was there, quite fidgety and kept pulling himself up. On returning home (it was easier to jump the low walls in those days but we preferred to take the gate), I asked my father why the gentleman was so nervous. My father was not sure but thought it had something to do with his being a deputy secretary in the presence of three joint secretaries. I trusted my father's judgment in those things. Once some years ago during the late sixties, I had seen Finance Secretary Ghulam Ishaq Khan in an airport lounge. I asked my father later whether he had a constant headache. My father replied that he was just being snooty in front of some foreign delegates. Now that was educational! Many years later he came to Karachi as governor state bank on retirement, while my father was an active secretary. Ishaq Khan, as I later found out, was quite a haughty bureaucrat before he became Zia's finance minister, chairman of senate and finally President of Pakistan.

Islamabad in those days was like a village. Everyone knew almost everyone else. The same was the case in the club which had a huge portrait of S M Yusuf who in addition to being President Ayub's principal secretary was also the foreign secretary during the disastrous first Islamic Summit in Rabat. He was the first president of the Islamabad Club. Ostensibly one sixth of the membership of the club was for diplomats who had few security concerns at that time.

While I was in Islamabad, I bumped on a speech sent to us from the US embassy. During March 1972, President Nixon mentioned to a joint session of Congress that he had moved the Seventh Fleet just to show the Indians that while they had virtually got East Pakistan, they could not get West Pakistan. This declaration of enormous significance has hardly ever been mentioned anywhere. We live in a world of our own; our rulers have always decided what we should know. The trend continues till the present day. Truth is often hidden in so many layers, that when we accidently bump upon it, we think it must be false! We are beginning to reap the bitter harvest of our actions and do not realize who or what is to blame.

Anyway the talk of the town in Islamabad during 1972 specially in my generation, and particularly amongst females, was the handsome Education or Law Minister Abdul Hafeez Pirzada. Bhutto was himself young and relied mainly on young men be it Pirzada, Sherpao or Khar. He did have a few senior ministers in his cabinet like Justice Faizullah Kundi or Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan though. And what a National Assembly that was across both sides of the house. The Speaker Fazal Ellahi Chaudhry was such a darling that nobody could argue with him. He was flanked by an officer's gallery and the President's box. Lesser mortals like me sat in the distinguished visitor's gallery with the diplomats and press corps above the members in the hall so improvised in the State Bank building that looked like a matchbox. We only heard tales of a president's palace, prime minister's secretariat and parliament building in those days.

Once during question hour, the issue of wheat shortage came up, and a member of the opposition remarked that this was because the Honorable minister for interior had eaten it all up. The rolly polly Khan Abdul Qayum Khan immediately rose and informed the House, "The honorable minister for interior takes only one slice of bread at breakfast". The entire house burst into laughter.

Nevertheless in these spartan conditions, two constitutions were unanimously passed; an interim constitution in April 1972 and a permanent one in August 1973. Watching from the DV gallery, I found the speaker's references to the Rules of Business strange. I wondered what business or trade could have to do with the assembly! I had a lot to learn in many ways. With the ministers, minsters of state or without portfolio, parliamentary secretaries and members, there were usually less than a hundred people across the floor of the House. I knew only a third of them perhaps but would listen to people chatting: "there goes Hakim Ali Zardari owner of the Bambino cinema in Karachi." Those comments did help.

My father liked working with the outspoken finance minister Dr Mubashir Hassan and Economic Adviser Feroze Qaiser, the latter was also an old friend of his. Both gentlemen are still alive. The good doctor seemed pleased to hear from me when I called him three years ago. He asked about my uncle AGN Kazi and when I told him he was not well, he asked me to remind him that at 95 he was only two years younger to him.

One day while I was there, the opposition was agitating because state owned newspapers had published some news of a London plan being hatched by opposition leaders. Soon five prominent personalities of the opposition were on their feet including Sherbaz Mazari and Shaukat Hayat Khan. They essentially told the government to prove what they were saying or go to hell! One member was talking on a point of order when another got up and started to say something. A third member rose to speak and said "Point of Order Sir". This is where the genius Pirzada came in: "There cannot be a point of order on a point of order!" he literally roared. Speaker Chaudhry was in his usual "please let me speak too" mode and actually did a good job by controlling tempers by his passive temperament. Just then the lights went off and came back in a minute or so. When the lights and sounds came back, Shaukat Hayat got up and said,"Mr. Speaker that darkness is symbolic of what will happen if we continue to make allegations against the opposition like this". Talking of presence of mind, it was undoubtedly on both sides of the house.

When the interim constitution was being passed, it was late night. Bhutto spoke eloquently for 2 hours or more non stop. My father heard the speech standing up as no seat was vacant in the officer's gallery. Wali Khan said something like 'peetay jaatey hain' but when more serious he said the opposition had the Hobson's choice, either to accept the constitution or have martial law for a longer time. Bhutto responded, "Yes we drink but we are not drunkards (a reference to his predecessor), nor do we drink the blood of the people (a reference to the rest of the world)!" The constitution was passed unanimously. It was the first passed by any assembly elected on the basis of direct franchise (at least what was left of it) in the country.

Looking at the parliamentarians of the present day - the less said the better - they are a total void with the possible exception of Aitzaz Ahsan who thrilled me with his speech a couple of years ago, giving a taste of the vintage assembly of the seventies.

The picture shows the Speaker and later President Fazal Elahi Chaudhry who was head of state from August 1973 till September 1978 - one month and two days longer than his constitutional term.

I think this was a great experience/opportunity for me. I worked at the dental hospital and it was great to see how different they treat their patients and the different accommodations they have to make. Living at Maria Elena´s was very nice, everything thing here was amazing. She had hot water, wifi and the meals were great! VIDA - University of Washington students interview their patient with the help of their translator Jenny Vargas, VIDA Staff during the August 2008 clinics in Costa Rica

Bennington's featured Postbac in the Spotlight this week is Gabrielle, who is 24 and from Albany, NY. She graduated in 2010 from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Health Policy and Law and a minor in Political Science. Here, she describes her path to a career in medicine as well as some of her experiences at Bennington.

What influenced your decision to pursue a career in medicine?

“Since my freshman year at Penn I found myself interweaving healthcare and disease into every paper or project—it only made sense to continue on this path of study and see where it leads me! Before pursuing my post bac, I was the Program Assistant for the Health System Quality and Efficiency program at the Commonwealth Fund.”

What’s your favorite aspect of the program and/or Bennington College?

“Bennington has been such a rewarding and fun experience for me. I have always wanted to work at the forefront of healthcare but was uncertain whether I would be successful as a premedical student. Bennington has provided me with a strong foundation in the sciences and has nurtured my interest in medicine. In addition to my coursework, I have had the privilege of being involved in translational research with Dr. Xinjun Zhu and her team in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Albany Medical College.

“Also, I really appreciate Field Work Term, which is a unique opportunity Bennington provides us to spend time during our post bac year exploring any area of healthcare we choose. I am currently enjoying an extremely cold FWT in Milwaukee as an intern for Population Health Management and Payment Innovation at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

“Ultimately what sets Bennington apart from other post bac programs is an ethos of camaraderie and collaboration between students. Two of my favorite memories are from this summer when Alix helped me master “ring flips” with my molecule set and Eva, Karly, and I stayed up late in Longmeadow studying DNA transcription and translation.”

Sabah recently graduated from Emory University with a double major in international studies and psychology. During her time in undergrad, she discovered her strong desire to learn more about the biological underpinnings of psychology, which eventually led her to pursuing a postbac program. Sabah is passionate about working with international communities and hopes to do so as a physician. Below is some more information on Sabah’s background and how she came to choose the Bennington Postbac Premed Program.

Why did you choose to do a postbac premed program?

“When I started college, I thought I wanted to help others through becoming a lawyer, so I decided to major in international studies. Through many experiences, I came to realize the central importance of medicine. Specifically, during trips abroad to Kenya and Scotland, I was exposed to healthcare issues that piqued my interest. In addition, I worked in a clinical psychology lab for 2.5 years, where I was trained to administer neuropsychological evaluations to a diverse range of patients. I also worked in a prenatal clinic via the psychology lab, allowing me to gain hands-on clinical experience in a unique setting. I loved these experiences and the responsibilities they brought with them. Through this work, I became more interested in the hard sciences behind psychology and eventually realized that my calling was to become a medical doctor. I chose to complete my psychology & IS degree before pursuing the premed courses.”

Why did you choose Bennington College for your postbac?

“I saw the primary advantages of Bennington as the small class size and the integration of the premed curriculum into a one-year program that doesn’t feel too rushed. I was able to visit campus prior to making my decision to attend and was able to sit in on a chemistry class, which was very helpful. I really appreciate how supportive the professors are and how much time they are willing to give to help students.”

What have been your favorite parts of the Bennington program?

“I really like my peers who make up the postbac class. It is a very supportive group and others are always willing to help. I’ve also enjoyed the labs, as they allow us to explore concepts of interest to us and apply what we’re learning in class. Field Work Term was a great, immersive experience, as well. I worked at a refugee clinic in Atlanta during FWT. I helped out by working as a scribe, translator, and by taking vital signs of patients and assisting with patient flow. This position helped confirm my decision to become a doctor and it encouraged my passion for working with communities outside of the US.”

Do you have any pearls of wisdom for other people looking at postbac programs?

“Explore all your options! Moving to a small and rural town was outside of my comfort zone - but I’ve come to enjoy the beauty of Bennington and I like the small community here. I think that the small class size of the program is key and can make a big difference in your learning. Finally, its good to start shadowing doctors even before entering a postbac program—it’s important to understand what the job of a physician is actually like before investing the time and resources.”

The fifth installment of my 52 Weeks project. I am going through some kind of rut right now with creativity...

This week wasn't too bad, I had to spend a good amount of time studying throughout the week. I had a quiz in my biochemistry class on Wednesday that I studied my ass off for. It ended up not being that bad of a quiz, but maybe that's because I studied a lot for it. Thursday I went to a meeting for my premedical club AMSA. Friday I visited the Simulation Center where medical/nursing students go, it was so awesome. There was a part where we had to talk with standardized patients (actors) and they kind of graded us on how we conducted ourselves when asking what was going on with them. I was so nervous, but once I walked in the room I let it flow natural. The patient said I did a really good job, I was just a little too far from him. After that I went to UNLV Buddies to tutor my buddy, which was fun like always. Yesterday I went to volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House and conducted a food drive. I studied a little/a lot and then went to get sushi with a few friends as a study break, it was soooo good. Thanks Janie! After that I just stayed home and studied, I have a biochem exam this week. Wish me luck! I turn 21 this week!!
