I walked the entire length of the trails (both east and west sides of the prairie), even the unmarked trails- took me about 4.5 to 5 hours to walk it while stopping to take photos. I walked close to 10 miles in total, I sure was tired by the time I finished.

The pattern on the abdomen of this queen Prairie Yellowjacket, Vespula atropilosa, is aberrant. The two black spots on the second tergite are usually not joined to the central black mark.
This little beauty is known as prairie smoke (Geum triflorum) but in this rendition, prairie fire seems more appropriate.

The sandhills around Burwell, Nebraska are home to a few leks where the Prairie Chickens (and Sharp-tailed Grouse) display in the spring.
Aspidoscelis sexlineatus viridis
August, 2011. Michigan.
An adult Prairie Racerunner from a sand prairie in Michigan, this individual was in the process of digging a burrow. This species is one of only two lizard species which occur in the state, and the Prairie Racerunner is only known to occur at site in the state. The Prairie Racerunner is listed as a Threatened Species in Michigan.

Prairie Kingsnakes
Snakes on display at the Ladybird Wildflower Center during "Nature Night". The snakes were all enclosed in small plastic boxes (with airholes, of course!) and I snapped away as quickly as possible since there were so many people pushing and shoving.
I made a new outfit for the Dress Up Bunch dolls! I'm loving the hedgehog fabric I used for the shirt. :-)
