He stands knee-deep in calm water, net arcing through the air in a practiced sweep. It is a rhythm he knows well: sunlight, silence, and the soft splash of the cast. But today, he has an audience. Two manatees surface just beyond the ripples, watching like curious neighbors who forgot their lawn chairs. They do not judge his technique, but they might be taking notes. Nature has a sense of humor, and sometimes it shows up with flippers.

In the streets of Istanbul, it’s not just fish you can taste. As you walk, the warm smoke of roasted chestnuts and the sweet char of corn greet you. These aromas tell simple stories: of winters gone by, of afternoons shared, of hands working skillfully over the fire.

And then there’s simit: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and covered in sesame seeds. It’s the bread of the street, the walker’s breakfast, the companion of tea. Sold from spotless red carts, their golden rings shine in the sun like edible jewels — or from humble mobile stands.

These street vendors —with their iron scales, wrapping paper, and well-practiced gestures— are part of the city’s everyday soul. There’s no rush here. Only the quiet pleasure of stopping, tasting something warm, looking around, and feeling part of a scene that needs no script.

I thought all the poles of scaffolding, the pillars and the way the light was coming in was going to make an interesting pano-sabotage image in B&W and then this gentleman walked into the middle of the shot in process. "Keeper", I thought. One of those wonderful 'happy accidents'.

Black and White Pano-Sabotage continues. "Pano-Sabotage" is the technique of deliberately MIS-using the smart phone's pano camera function to create marked and unique effects WITH THE CAMERA. Some post processing is done for balance and contrast etc, but the EFFECT of the "facetized" imagery is done IN the camera, AT the moment of shooting.

See the Flickr group, "PANO-Vision" for a gallery of said imagery as practiced by a small roster of dedicated, serious artists who are pushing this medium into fantastic new places.

Another flower indulgence, I have recently discovered these wonderful flowers and have fallen in love with all of the layers of petals. Practiced some macro work and focus stacking this morning, feeling happy about the results.

Have a happy Saturday, we are off to fun springtime activities.

Excerpt from the plaque:

The Troyer Homestead and Cemetery: John Troyer (1753-1842) moved here from Pennsylvania with his family in the late 1780’s. He farmed, built a grist mill, smithy, dock and trading vessel. Reputedly a Tunker – similar to Mennonites – Troyer practiced medicine using herbal remedies. Superstitious, he was nicknamed “Witch Doctor” but was a sane and respected healer.

Kingbirds that had recently fledged waited impatiently for their parents to return with food. They practiced wing-stretches and short flights while waiting.

Sufi whirling is a form of physically active meditation which originated among Sufis, and which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order and other orders such as the Rifa'i-Marufi. It is a customary meditation practice performed within the Sema, or worship ceremony, through which dervishes, aim to reach the source of all perfection, or kamal.

Smudging is a ceremony practiced by various cultures around the world. This ceremony involves the burning of a smudge stick, which is a bundle of dried herbs, most commonly white sage. The smudging employed by New Age movements is based on a Native American practice known as the Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing, with smudging being its common name. www.ancient-origins.net/history-ancient-traditions/ancien...

“The secret of prayer is a hunger for God and for the vision of God, a hunger that lies far deeper than the level of language or affection...when you have practiced meditation for a few years, it is the most spontaneous thing in the world for the will to settle down to its occupation of obscurely and mutely loving God as soon as you compose yourself for prayer...remain in simple attention to God and keep your will peacefully directed to Him in simple desire, while intermittent shadows may go about in the background. The distractions that do harm are the ones that draw our will away from its profound and peaceful occupation with God...it is the will to pray that is the essence of prayer, and the desire to find God, to see Him and to love Him is the one thing that matters. No matter how distracted you may be, center your heart on God, Who is present to you in spite of all that may be going through your mind. His presence does not depend on your thoughts of Him. He is unfailingly there, if He were not, you could not even exist.”

- Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation

Spring is not just the time when nature awakens around us. It is also the time when the farmers till their fields.

I observed and captured this time in the perfect place.

It is a landscape characterized by wide valleys and rolling hills and is known for its extremely fertile soil. That's why intensive agriculture is practiced everywhere here,

This region, located in the Czech Republic, near the city of Brno, is often referred to as Czech Tuscany. Since I was there (which I had been planning to do for several years) I know why. By the way, the name of this region is Moravia. And so the area is sometimes called Moravian Tuscany.

Especially in the morning and evening hours, the landscape here looks as if it had been painted with watercolors. And yet it's all real. By the way, I reduced the color saturation in my photos. Because no one else would believe me that it really looks like that there. Today I'll show you an overview of one of the valleys that I drove through here to visit the hotspots that you'll see shortly.

The White Lolë Yoga Tour ™ was a meeting of 5,000 people who practiced yoga all together on the site of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal last Saturday.

A crosswalk in downtown Calgary serves as my pallet for a slow shutter speed. I do admit that I practiced many times.

My guide and I watched these lionesses for about an hour. They lounged around, played with their cubs, practiced a stand off with elephants three times their size, did trial runs showing off their hunting maneuvers and then one stated to dig this hole.

She was digging very fast and it quickly was becoming a very large and deep hole. Then the others stood guard. I asked my guide what she was digging for and he was uncertain. "Google" says she was perhaps trying to catch a small burrowing animal or maybe even looking for water. I fantasized that they were planning a barbecue after finally going hunting.

"Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries, the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this practice are called street performers or buskers in the United Kingdom. Outside of New York, buskers is not a term generally used in American English." - Wikipedia

Please excuse my going off on a tangent, but this might be of interest to some people. As I was processing this picture I realized that what I was doing was equivalent to an informal mindfulness meditation practice Years ago I practiced meditation, but I quit after a few years; then in 2020 I listened to a couple of lecture series on Mindfulness, but I kept falling asleep when I tried to meditate.. I have recently listened to those lectures again and started meditating. As I was processing this picture I realized what I was doing was exactly what the lecturers describe as the objective of a mindfulness practice. In both formal and informal mindfulness the objective is to focus only on the present. Some tasks that are used for informal mindfulness meditation are eating, driving and walking. For example when I do my walking meditation I focus on my steps, which is easy as my walking shoes squeak badly. When I’m processing a picture I tend to hyper focus on what I’m doing to the exclusion of everything else. I lose track of time and completely ignore my surroundings; I will often miss a meal even though I can see the time on my computer. There is a great deal of research that shows that this type of activity is very beneficial to your mental wellbeing. I’m currently meditating 26 minutes five days a week and trying to work up to 45 minutes, but the quality of my meditation is not nearly as good as I get when processing a picture, although it is getting better. Perhaps I should just spend more time processing my pictures.

I walk where my mother once walked,

where her footprints learned to fade quickly,

where the ground keeps no memories.

only sky fallen upside down

the pan holds you there,

perched upon your mirror self

neck bent slowly,

a question written in the shape of hunger.

I think of my sisters,

how we practiced balance on hot stones,

how we learned early

which parts of ourselves to lift from the ground.

when I turn away,

the pan keeps you,

the sky keeps you,

and my eyes keep you even longer

tonight I will sleep on the edge of the village,

salt still white on my calves,

and share your dreams

of wide horizons.

I took a butterfly Photography class sponsored by Desert Botanical Garden and taught by Joanne West. I learned a lot and practiced a lot. I really feel that I had improved significantly by the end of the class.

We had a classroom presentation followed by private hands-on practice in the Butterfly Pavilion.

Siproeta stelenes (malachite) is a Neotropical brush-footed butterfly (family Nymphalidae). The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings. Typically, the wingspread is between 8.5 and 10 cm (3.3 and 3.9 in). The malachite is found throughout Central and northern South America, where it is one of the most common butterfly species. Its distribution extends as far north as southern Texas and the tip of Florida,

I wore my shadow like a second skin,

A careful mask, a practiced grin.

I bent my voice, I dulled my flame,

To keep the world from calling my name.

Through narrow halls of whispered doubt,

I locked my truest self without.

The years were heavy, silence long,

A muted heart, an unsung song.

But one bright dawn, I loosed the chain,

And felt the warmth dissolve my pain.

The sun rose gentle on my face,

And I stood unhidden, in my place.

No shame, no veil, no need to run,

At last I live beneath the sun.

The truth once buried, now can rise,

Alive, unbroken, in open skies.

Sufi whirling (or Sufi turning) is a form of physically active meditation that originated among certain Sufi groups and is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a customary meditation practice performed within the Sema, or worship ceremony, through which dervishes aim to reach a greater connection with Allah. This is sought through abandoning one's ego or personal desires by listening to music, focusing on God, and spinning one's body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the Sun.

Happy Father's Day! Lacking a garage, they practiced out in the field so that they did not annoy the neighbors.

The Trinity Monastery (Ukrainian: Троїцько-Іллінський монастир, romanized: Troits’ko-Illins’kyi monastyr) is a former Orthodox monastery in the city of Chernihiv in northeastern Ukraine.

The original monastery of St. Elijah the Prophet on Boldina Hill seems to have been founded by Saint Anthony of Pechersk in the 11th century, but was abandoned after the Mongol invasion of 1239. One tiny church survives from that period.

The new Trinity monastery was founded nearby by Bishop Lazar Baranovych in 1649. In the neighbouring city of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Baranovych founded a printing press, which was rare at the time. He later transferred the printing press to the Trinity Monastery. The monastery's adjacent printing press was famed for their production of engravings, and its library — for containing more than 11,000 books.

The main church, or the katholikon, was constructed between 1679 and 1695 to designs by Johann Baptist Sauer, a master builder from Wilno. This church has seven pear-shaped cupolas. It is considered a high point of Ukrainian Baroque architecture (as practiced under the auspices of Hetman Ivan Mazepa).

After the monastery was closed in 1786, the Trinity cathedral was considerably rebuilt, losing four domes and most Baroque details. Its current appearance is the result of a 1980s reconstruction campaign. It has been the seat of a local bishopric since 1991.

As I have practiced it, photography produces pleasure by simplicity.

I see something special and show it to the camera.

We are at 3,445 m (11,302 ft) altitude, in Mittelallalin, outlet of the “Alpine metro”. On arrival, a landscape of great beauty is revealed before our amazed eyes. We have a front row seat to admire the nearby Allalinhorn (4,027 m - 13,212 ft). Summer skiing is practiced here. It was late morning, it was mild and the weather was radiant. We met lots of returning skiers there (from the end of the morning, skiing was no longer allowed, because it was too mild).

The “Alpine metro” is an underground funicular, the highest in Europe. Built in 1984, it extends the cable car which goes from Saas-Fee to Felskinn (2,980 m - 9,977 ft). Its tunnel is 1,447 meters (4,747 feet) long, with a height difference of 465 meters and a maximum slope of 48%. In about 3 minutes (source: Wikipedia), we go from 2,980 m (9,843ft) to 3,445 meters (11,302 ft).

“Attracted and fascinated by Japan, the NEO-Japan SL event is the one for me! For this challenge, I was inspired by the Japanese Kabuki theater, practiced since the beginning of the seventeenth century, a show that frees the imagination as an enchantment of magic. The word Kabuki is made up of three ideograms: 歌 ka (song), 舞 bu (dance), 伎 ki (skill). The charm of these dancing masks amazes the public with all their splendor and particularity. The colors I used are red and white to create a poem of harmony and simplicity in my heart. I imagine that I'm a mask dancing, feeling indescribable emotions. Seeing is believing.”

HBW! Peace Now!

The day comes when the instructor says

“Do you want to take it by yourself?”

You’ve dreamed of this moment for a long time.

Have been anticipating it for a long time.

Studied hard, practiced hard, for a long time, it seems.

But its only been a few short weeks.

A few short hours in the airplane.

And always with someone who can keep me out of trouble

Am I really ready?

The Instructor thinks I am,

or else he wouldn’t turn me loose like this.

I gotta do this so I summon up some courage.

“Yes” I say, “I want to take it.”

“OK!” he says. He unbuckles the shoulder strap.

The door unlatches and he says

“Give me four touch and goes, then back to the ramp”.

“OK” I say.

The door opens, and he exits.

Engine is still running, propeller still turning.

He stands clear of the aircraft.

I latch the door, thinking, “I gotta do this right.”

“I gotta do this just like I’ve been taught and no other way.”

“I gotta do this as perfect as I can.”

Release the brakes, ease the throttle forward, I’m moving.

I steer it around the ramp watching the clearances.

Out onto the taxiway, down that narrow strip of concrete,

down to the end of the runway, moving to the hold point.

Final check list, always do these, no matter what.

Hold the brakes, run up the engine, all is good.

Switch the magnetos, 1, 2 and back to both, all is good.

Fuel tanks on both, all is good,

Flaps set, trim set, checklist complete, all is good.

Move onto the runway, get centered up, nose wheel locked,

Look around, all is clear, here we go.

Speed picks up, keep it centered.

Speed picks up, controls feel live, ground noise falls away,

And I’m up. That was the easy part.

Steady climb, everything running good.

No time for self-elation.

Gotta keep ahead of things.

Gotta keep thinking ahead.

Bank left, back down to the field’s end,

Gentle descent, get set up for landing.

Eyes on the touchdown point,

Watch the speed, watch the speed,

down down down, down—Flare!

We quit flying. Tires screech as they start turning.

No Bounces!

That’s one, three more to go.

Throttle advances again, off again, climbing again,

Perfect as I can.

Around we go again. Keep ahead of it, keep ahead of it.

Landing four coming up, no bounces so far,

Perfect as I can –Flare! Screech! No bounce!

Not over yet.

Slow down to taxi speed, make that turn off the runway smartly,

Perfect as I can.

Stroll the airplane back to the apron, watch the clearances, things have changed a bit….

Ease it into the spot, brakes set, checklist in my hand.

Engine off, fuel off, shutdown and secure all. Headset off.

Unbuckle the belt, unlatch the door, climb out with confidence.

Now I can breathe deep, now I can smile.

My support group swarms me.

I did it.

Perfect as I can.

A trip to Roundhay, W yorks, for the Confiding Common Scoter that had been there for nearly 2 weeks proved unfruitful as it departed....However a family of 4 young Kingfishers certainly helped ease the pain..... Unconcerned by the crowds as they practiced to fish... Occasionally dropping the fish..

I practiced a little light painting by wrapping my Ice light with rainbow gels. Although this could have been done just as easily with an I-pad. Sending love and peace out into the world today, we could all use more so please feel it, pass it along and make the world a bit better.

The theme for the catchy colors group this week is pink. In my craft supplies I found a pink fluffy feather and practiced more macro work today.

In February I gave a photography class at the Embarcadero in San Francisco on behalf of the Digital Photo Academy. We first learned different types of composition, then we practiced in the field. We walked in the halls of the Ferry Building to try one-point perspective shots, we walked along the piers, then we went to the Hyatt Regency hotel to practice bokeh shots and abstracts at the indoor fountain in the hotel lobby.

This Mayan Mother, is lighting Candles, a Mayan ritual, in a Catholic Church, to bring good fortune to her many family members. Ancient Pagan and recent (1630's) Christian religious beliefs are practiced, and even combined in Guatemala. This Church in Chichicastenango was full of a mix of Mayan and Catholic worshipers during Semana Santa Week.

It was captured during Pavarana Purnima festival. Pavarana is a Buddhist holy day celebrated on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month. It marks the end of the month of Vassa, sometimes called "Buddhist Lent." This day marks the end of the rainy season in some Asian countries like Thailand, where Theravada Buddhism is practiced. On this day, each monk (Pali: bhikkhu) must come before the community of monks (Sangha) and atone for an offense he may have committed during the Vassa.

In Bangladesh Buddhist devotees fire candles & fly Fanush (Hot Air Balloon) to honor Lord Buddha and all the departed soul during the eve of Pavarana Purnima.
