Following the Practical Photography course - Month 1, black and white photography - Decided this shot was too dark with the tree branches becoming lost in the dark cloud.

Shoot a simple landscape photo that incorporates at least one compositional device. Use the rule of thirds as a starting point and include lead-in lines, foreground interest or both if you're feeling adventurous.

That's as simple as it gets - there are some additional suggestions including

• a recommendation to use f16 (APS-C sensor) or f22 (full frame sensors) for a large depth of field.

• consider viewpoint carefully - low viewpoint / standing?

• tripod might help with long exposures and also tends to make you consider a shot in more detail.

Following the Practical Photography course - Month 1, black and white photography - Decided this shot was the best of a poor bunch. Off camera flash in manual mode with aperture stopped down to black out the background. Camera set to save RAW + B&W JPG. This is the unedited JPG file except for some crop and resize.
