The ARCA Swiss cube is the most practical geared heads for landscape, architecture and macro photographers. It is made in a few different flavors with minor variations.
The finish and quality of the ARCA cube is not as good as the Linhoff geared head with dovetail track, which is ARCA-compatible. Although the ARCA cubes are made very well and with great precision, the Linhof head is in an entirely different class by itself. But it is far less versatile than the ARCA cube and costs about 50% more. For all use except perhaps with full-sized technical cameras, the ARCA cube is the superior practical choice.
Having said that, the ARCA cube suffers from one major design flaw and that has to do with its clamp. Even in a brand new cube, the clamp is a ticking time bomb ready to fall apart at any moment. This poses enormous risks to the camera and lens. This is true for both the lever and surprisingly, even screw knob versions of the clamp.
In my own case, a screw knob version of my ARCA cube just disintegrated, exploding to a dozen tiny parts that scattered in all directions, like a scene out of a cartoon. Luckily, I was still holding my camera and lens with one hand, so I averted an expensive disaster.
So to anyone who uses an ARCA cube, I highly recommend that you replace the OEM clamp with a competent third-party clamp. In my case, I first tried a Novoflex clamp, but it turns out that the ARCA cube has two pegs sticking out at the top that are used to provide the clamp with leverage while panning a camera. So I could not simply screw in a clamp with a flat surface.
So I had two custom holes professionally drilled into my clamp at a local high-tech machine shop with sophisticated NC machines, as you can see from the pictures below. So I ended up with a custom clamp that works beautifully.
It turns out there's a much simpler solution, pointed out by John Ngai below. The Really Right Stuff B2-LR II clamp comes with two extra holes that perfectly align with the pegs on the ARCA cube, and also, perfectly fit them. So all you have to do is to mount the clamp on top of the cube and lock in the center screw.
You can use other clamps that do not have the two extra holes, like the RRS B2-AS II or FLM SRB-60, as long has they have a hollow part on the underside that allow the pegs on the cube to stick into (see the undersides of these clamps in the pictures below). However, these pegs would be in free space and not parked inside form-fitting cavities, and the panning action will not grip the rotating base at the top of the cube by the two pegs. So all the panning movement is conveyed to the cube only via the center screw. This is not optimal and not recommended, although it will work, but you need to pay attention that the clamp is not becoming unscrewed over time.
Hope that's helpful info!

It's very difficult to dress for this changeable weather in something that's not too warm, not too cold, looks OK if it gets wet etc. This morning, I was wearing a rain jacket with this top and skirt but swapped for a cardigan in the afternoon.
(Actually the skirt was not so practical - a cheap eBay purchase, the zip, which is at the back, came undone twice and I ended up going back home and changing rather than have it fall off in public. That's one reason why I like dresses, most styles will at least stay on you).
A very interesting article to me, I'd become involed with the Datsun Owners Club by this time.
I have a copy of the Datsun 1200 photo sen to me by its owners (see below) and 180B was well-known to me as I regularly visited Will back then.
I also knew Bryan Wilson who owned the Celica, somewhere I have a photo of that car when we visited his workshop after a show - wonder if he ever finished it?
A friend a work gifted me with a Latvian mitten kit a couple of years ago. I've waited to start these until I had taken a class. In other traditional colorwork techniques, usually only two colors are worked at once. My teacher said that Latvians weren't afraid to use 3, 4, or event 5 colors at once, which is not the easiest to manage.
I went home and discovered that these mittens used 4 colors in each row. I spoke with my friend (whose family came from Latvia), and she responded, "Well, Latvia is a cold cold country, and Latvians are a practical people. All the strands make for a warm mitten." Which gave me a nice appreciation of all the people knitting warm mittens while making them colorful, cheerful, and beautiful.
I wanted to do this in all trans-clear to be like a stained glass window, but I really only had the red and yellow trans slopes. :-( Everything yellow except the top and bottom rows are floating.
