One new addition to this year's 24-Hour Science Fiction Film Marathon up in greater Boston - the 31st annual! - is the foil hat competition. The discerning sci-fi fan, after all, needs protection from evil emanations in the wee hours of the festival, when our brains are at their most vulnerable.
It's in the spirit of the old paper-airplane contest, by which we can mean both that it's good wacky fun and that when push comes to shove, everyone talks big and most people don't actually make any hats. I had a grand plan involving a cucumber and a predictable Spinal Tap scenario, but the late-night bus ride renders it pretty impractical, and at the last minute I forget.
This is one of the contest winners from Cinema 2.
Tech specs: Canon Digital Rebel XT, 1/60 second, f/1.8, ISO 400, 50mm lens. Shot in serious darkness in RAW.
Been out and about today scouting locations for the Practical Photography Camera School landscapes module.
This wouldn't be eligible for submission for the module as it's been cropped and the saturation altered in lightroom.

Practical Truths includes the work of Jacob Cartwright & Nick Jordan, Jenna Collins, G. Leddington, Olivia Plender and Ben Rivers whose work is represented in film, sculpture and photography. The show explores issues around methods of documentation that attempt to grasp the dichotomy of the individual and the universal revealing various truths about human culture. The works in Practical Truths often use narratives that focus on individuals or communities that sit uncomfortably with the demands of conventional living and thereby convey a timeless sentiment that is neither defined within the present-day nor within a specific historic decade.
Practical Nursing students participated in the PN Pinning Ceremony on Wednesday, July 19, in the Crist Student Center at the Main Campus in Galesburg. The annual event for recent graduates is a celebration of the culmination of their efforts from their time in the program and includes the opportunity for family members and loved ones to participate in the ceremony.
After a long day nursing or teaching unruly children, the last thing a middle class lady wants is to bind herself down in layers of frills. This dress was designed to be practical in every sense, including the lack of many of the unnecessary frills that hinder the wealthier ladies. With this dress, the Victorian lady can play croquet and other genteel and healthful games, while protecting one's modest image.
