Master of the skies the powerful white tailed eagle. The UK's largest and most powerful bird making it's final approach.

This bird is a fabulous advert for conservation and a great blueprint for the reintroduction of other former native species..

White tailed eagles were driven to extinction in the UK by the ill advised hand of man, with the last bird being shot on Shetland in 1916.

These gorgeous birds were reintroduced on Rum in 1975 with further releases on Wester Ross in 1993. Since then most of the eagle population has found it's way to Mull where a healthy population is now well established.

Once again the population is starting to spread out across western Scotland and the Isles.

Many thanks to all those who take the time to comment on my photos. It is truly appreciated.

The Aurora gets cooking, seriously, on the morning of March 1, in northern Yukon skies. This was by far the most intense Aurora I've seen in years ... the deep red of the upper curtain just blew me away! The upper red light is generated when highly charged electrons in the solar wind interact with an isotope of oxygen which is found only hundreds of kilometers up in our planet's very tenuous outer layer of atmosphere.

And, this was an unusual and high Aurora to be sure, as throughout the hours we were absolutely transfixed by this astonishing demonstration of nature's power, there was not even a hint of the pink nitrogen line which is normally seen at the very bottom of intensely active Auroral curtains.

In my experience, the deep scarlet of Auroras such as this is usually not particularly obvious to the naked eye, though this varies with different observers. Allowing your eyes to become well dark adapted makes a big difference ... This is easily experienced, since even a very brief exposure to a flashlight beam or a set of vehicle headlights will make it suddenly much harder to visually perceive the deep red. The human eye, in general, is less sensitive to red light than any other wavelength in the spectrum. We have only the tiny microsecond which it takes for a ray of light to travel from the surface of our cornea to our brain's visual cortex, whereas a camera can, of course, accumulate light, as in this 10 second exposure.

Back in the days of film photography, (where I still am, part of the time) photographers sought out film emulsions which were especially red sensitive in order to capture this (Konica films were really good for that).

In this digital age, many beginning Aurora paparazzi make the mistake of adjusting their cameras to a night mode of shooting, lowering the red sensitivity of the camera's sensor.

It turns out that the colors of an active Aurora are more closely akin to what you see in the daytime .... Therefore, the most natural results are achieved by leaving the camera's color temperature at a daytime setting, around 5500K.

(taken using my trusty old Zenitar 16mm f2.8 lens) ..... Much more to come ... Right now I have to go out and watch the sky ........

Powerful bird that I've seen many times but never this close or with a more cooperative bird. Crested Caracara is a tropical falcon and found in only three states; Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Usually found in open country; frequently seen around carrion.

This artist's concept shows an auroral display on a brown dwarf. If you could see an aurora on a brown dwarf, it would be a million times brighter than an aurora on Earth.

Mysterious objects called brown dwarfs are sometimes called "failed stars." They are too small to fuse hydrogen in their cores, the way most stars do, but also too large to be classified as planets. But a new study in the journal Nature suggests they succeed in creating powerful auroral displays, similar to the kind seen around the magnetic poles on Earth.

"This is a whole new manifestation of magnetic activity for that kind of object," said Leon Harding, a technologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, and co-author on the study.

On Earth, auroras are created when charged particles from the solar wind enter our planet's magnetosphere, a region where Earth's magnetic field accelerates and sends them toward the poles. There, they collide with atoms of gas in the atmosphere, resulting in a brilliant display of colors in the sky. Read more: www.nasa.gov/jpl/powerful-auroras-found-at-brown-dwarf

A powerful juxtaposition, I thought, in Belfast city centre.

I see this man often, always alone, head always bowed. I think he's probably homeless.

Another shot of this American Dodge also seen on my Previous Photo.

The Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australia. They have large yellow eyes and no facial-disc with adults reaching 60 cm in length. These owls are in Centennial Park Sydney. With two adults and two owlets, the owlets are the lighter fluffy ones.

The pair of Powerful Owls that I posted recently are successfully rearing two young, which is very heartening to see considering their vulnerable status.

Thanks to birding legend, Alan Morris for guiding us to these.

Today's news from Ukraine is heartbreaking again. Embassies closing, the threat of a powerful attack, russia's experimental launch of new missiles. Who gave you the right to destroy our country, to kill Ukrainians?!

Haven't got this shot right yet. Still working on it.

1. The Glass Prison

[music by Myung, Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess]

[lyrics by Mike Portnoy]

[I. REFLECTION]

Cunning, Baffling, Powerful

Been beaten to a pulp

Vigorous, Irresistable

Sick and tired and laid low

Dominating, Invincible

Black-out, loss of control

Overwhelming, Unquenchable

I'm powerless, have to let go

I can't escape it

It leaves me frail and worn

Can no longer take it

Senses tattered and torn

Hopeless surrender

Obsession's got me beat

Losing the will to live

Admitting complete defeat

Fatal Descent

Spinning around

I've gone too far

To turn back round

Desperate attempt

Stop the progression

At any length

Lift this obsession

Crawling to my glass prison

A place where no one knows

My secret lonely world begins

So much safer here

A place where I can go

To forget about my daily sins

Life here in my glass prison

A place I once called home

Fall in nocturnal bliss again

Chasing a long lost friend

I no longer can control

Just waiting for this hopelessness to end

[II. RESTORATION]

Run - fast from the wreckage of the past

A shattered glass prison wall behind me

Fight - past walking through the ashes

A distant oasis before me

Cry - desperate crawling on my knees

Begging God to please stop the insanity

Help me - I'm trying to believe

Stop wallowing in my own self pity

"We've been waiting for you my friend

The writing's been on the wall

All it takes is a little faith

You know you're the same as us all"

Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone

Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own

Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone

Enter the door

Desperate

Fighting no more

Help me restore

To my sanity

At this temple of hope

I need to learn

Teach me how

Sorrow to burn

Help me return

To humanity

I'll be fearless and thorough

To enter this temple of hope

Believe

Transcend the pain

Living the life

Humility

Opened my eyes

This new odyssey

Of rigorous honesty

Serenity

I never knew

Soundness of mind

Helped me to find

Courage to change

All the things that I can

"We'll help you perform this miracle

But you must set your past free

You dug the hole, but you can't bury your sole

Open your mind and you'll see"

Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone

Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own

Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone

[III. REVELATION]

Way off in the distance I saw a door

I tried to open

I tried forcing with all of my will and still

The door wouldn't open

[replaced with "but" in this line]

Unable to trust in my faith

I turned and walked away

I looked around, felt a chill in the air

Took my will and turned it over

The glass prison which once held me is now gone

["now" is not heard in this line]

A long lost fortress

Armed only with liberty

And the key of my willingness

Fell down on my knees and prayed

"Thy will be done"

I turned around, saw a light shining through

The door was wide open

I flew it as safety pilot from March to November 1981. It was a great flying corporate transport. Brand new Golden Eagle III with RNAV.

In comparison to the 411 on which it was based, the 421 introduced a cabin pressurisation system, more powerful geared and turbocharged GTSIO-520-D engines and a higher max takeoff weight. Deliveries of production 421s began in May 1967, Cessna at the time claiming it as the cheapest pressurised twin on the market.

First improvements to the 421 were offered with the 421A of 1969, but the 421B Golden Eagle of 1970 featured a number of significant improvements including lengthened nose and wing span, while the engines retained their power to higher altitudes than before. The final expression of the 421 was the 421C available from late 1975, with a bonded wet wing and no tip tanks, higher vertical tail, more efficient props and new trailing link undercarriage.

421A - Max speed 444km/h (240kt), max cruising speed 420km/h (227kt), long range cruising speed 364km/h (197kt). Initial rate of climb 1680ft/min. Service ceiling 27,000ft. Range with no reserves and standard fuel 1570km (847nm), with optional fuel 2756km (1488nm).

Manassas Airport [old W10]

First Landing Strip

In 1930, the Manassas Town Council proposed that a landing strip be constructed along Virginia Route 234 near Manassas. At that time the population of Manassas was 1,215 and the Mayor was Harry P. Davis, for whom the current airport was named.

The following year, a group of investors purchased almost 95 acres of land in the area currently known as Manaport Shopping Center along Route 234. The airport was leased to the City of Manassas in 1931 and officially opened on June 8, 1932.

Over the next few years, an additional 12.6 acres were purchased and several improvements were made at the airport. In 1945, the City purchased the airport outright.

Airport Relocation

Due to increased airport activity and encroaching housing development, the City saw that it was necessary to move the airport to a new location. In 1963, 268 acres were purchased with federal, state, and local funds. The new airport was dedicated as the Manassas Municipal Airport on September 20, 1964. The airport had a single 3700' x 100' paved runway, a rotating beacon, maintenance hangar, office, and 30 T-Hangars.

Since 1964, many changes have taken place at Manassas Regional Airport (HEF) – Harry P. Davis Field. Additional land was purchased and many improvements were implemented. In 1997, a new 5700' parallel runway, 16L/34R, and taxiway Bravo were constructed. In years to follow, ramp areas, perimeter and access roadways, and a Main Terminal Building were built on the east side of the airfield. Private franchise holders have constructed additional T-Hangars, Corporate Hangars, business complexes, and other facilities.

There are only 23 of these Ice Explorer vehicles on the planet -- 6-wheeled monsters with massively powerful engines and gearboxes that move them along at a pace of 4 miles an hour or so. 21 of the 23 are at this glacier and the remaining two are permanently stationed in Antactica. Our visit was literally the last run of the season and our driver and guide took a few minutes to toss snowballs at each other.

- It is a completely preserved medieval mining town. The fate of Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) has been closely linked to the exploitation of its abundant resources of silver ore. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the town was the main producer of silver and gold in the Kingdom of Hungary. The town was called “terra banensium” (the land of miners) as early as in 1156. The original Hungarian population was joined by skilled German settlers who started arriving in the 13th century. Selmecbánya/Banská Štiavnica gained the status of a royal town in 1238, as one of the first towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. During the Ottoman Wars, the Turks made concerted efforts to conquer rich mining towns in Upper Hungary. This new threat led Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) to build powerful fortifications, including two castles, in the 16th century. As one of the most important centers of Protestant Reformation in the country, the town belonged to the Protestant "League of Seven Mining Towns". The town was also a foremost center of innovation in mining industry. In 1627, gun powder was used here for the first time in the world in a mine. In 1735, the first mining school in the Kingdom of Hungary was founded here. In the years 1762-1770, the Hofkammer in Vienna, with support from Queen Maria Theresa, transformed the school into the famous Mining Academy, creating the first technical university in the world. In 1919, after the creation of Czechoslovakia, the Academy was moved to Sopron in Hungary. In 1782 Selmecbánya (Banská Štiavnica) was the third biggest town in the Kingdom of Hungary (with 23,192 or incl. suburbs 40,000 inhabitants), after Pozsony (today Bratislava) and Debrecen. But the town’s development was too closely linked to the mining activity which had been progressively declining since the second half of the 19th century.
