This is a screenshot of "Temperature Monitor" which graphs the output from thermometers in your Mac.

It basically fluctuates between 50 and 64 degrees Celsius (120 and 146 F), at which point the little fans kick in. Both of em. They don't do much so I also have a small (9" diameter) clamp-on fan which I have pointed at the back of the Powerbook, which is raised up on two thin wood slats so there is circulation.

In the above shot you can see when the fan is on. The temperature drops fast. Turning it of causes the temperature to rise just as quickly though. This was taken with no "heavy apps" running. Just my email (Mail.app), IM (Adium) and browser (Camino, which had no windows open).

The only thing I can attribute this heat to is a) a possibly faulty Power Supply board and b) the video card running the external monitor.

64°C is hot. Water boils at 100.

Anybody wanna compare? Grab the app and upload screenshots with setup descriptions?

I noticed a few weeks ago that one of the memory slots on my PowerBook was no longer working and only 1G of memory was showing up. It was still under warranty so I dropped it off at the Apple store on the 16th. I got it back today. They not only replaced the faulty motherboard but also replaced the bottom and top case which had some cosmetic damage that I had inflicted when installing a faster hard drive, nice bonus! And even though there were a million people in there buying iPods I still was in and out in about 15 minutes. Good work Apple.

I just popped my powerbook open, and instead of saying that it would calculate the remaining time, it showed me this nice figure (only for a few seconds unfortunately).

$3600 Macintosh, pocket Olympus instamatic with great optics, er... I Ching. Man that trackball.

powerbook keyboard

The connector for the sleep switch and LED now occupying it's new home on the back of the powerbook.

first the superdrive crapped out, then the hard drive shit all over itself......you served me well powerbook :-( .....I am surprised it lasted this long with everything I have put it through....

it will go in a box and when I return from Italy in a year I will see about reviving the poor old thing....

I have to stop now.

These are:

Andy's 17" Powerbook, Gabriel's 15" Powerbook, Anna Lisa's 13" Macbook, Anna Lisa's old 12" iBook, Kristin's 12" Powerbook.

Now that's a lotta laptop. :)

My first taste of Little Britain on the G4 Powerbook. I am not sure what to think - sometimes funny, sometimes just plain weird. I miss my powerbook... 28/05/05

We did the editing for a semester work during two summer nights on my PowerBook G4. It was so damn hot these days that I've put a towel to protect the notebook from my sweat...

68LC040 was the math coprocessor-less version of the '040. Runs at 25Mhz in the 520/520C; 33Mhz in the 540/540c. (Technically they run at twice that, but I believe the internal bus speed is half of the nominal speed, thus the 50/25 designation.)

I bought this a couple of days ago on eBay for £289. It arrived this afternoon. I am looking forward to playing with it :)

As noted on my blog I've been having a *little* hard drive trouble. This demonstrates my temporary solution for coaxing some more life out the beast whilst I copied my files to an external drive (Lacie 500GB Firewire 800, used for storing films…and six week old backups). I'm now booted from that (arrgh! slow! noisy!) and will be picking up a faster 7200rpm internal to replace the cancerous Toshiba on Saturday.

I got to this point using only my pocket knife (blade only) and sticky tape. MacGyver would be proud.

I miss my 12" PowerBook so

so

so

so

so much.

My toy... I don't know what I would do without a Mac.

finally I got my phone working together with my powerbook. I've been looking into that a while ago also, but only recently I got myself a unlimited dataplan and now I can connect everywhere. I connect through GPRS but that's just as good as the iPhone right? ;-) (I uploaded this picture from the train also)

That is my love, PowerBook G4 12".

Just sold a TON of old Macintosh Compters and hardware. Some final pictures.

a scratch appeared on my aluminium powerbook and it wasn't my fault.

i got it off my chest elsewhere on flickr.

any suggestions as to warranty cover?

This is how I currently have my dorm desk set up. As you can see, I have a sink next to the towel. ;)

My PB 140. I wrote much of my doctoral thesis and my first article on this.

It's amazing what my PowerBook has gone thru. This dent is from when my roommates cat attacked the power cable and sent my PowerBook G4 12" in a three foot express trip to the floor from the top of a tray, catching the coffee table on the way down.
