We were leaving Page, AZ on our way to Bryce Canyon with inclement weather that we hoped would not ruin our trip. The sun was doing cool things on the Lake Powell Cliffs as the clouds passed over. We took the turnout and tried to get a shot or two in the beautiful and rapidly changing light.

BNSFās Cody local passes through a nice cluster of grain elevators just before it crosses South Bent Street in Powell, Wyoming, on June 28, 2018. The eastbound train is headed for the connection to BNSFās Casper Subdivision at Frannie, and is EMD-powered by GP38-3R No. 2392 and SD40-2 No. 1659 still awash in weathered Burlington Northern Cascade green.
A colorful mural decorates the Inman Grain Elevator in Powell, Park County, Wyoming. The town was established in 1909 as water from dams and canals associated with the Shoshone Project kick started new agricultural activity and homesteading in the area. The name Powell came from Major John Wesley Powell, geologist, explorer, conservationist, and head of the Reclamation/Geodetic Service at the time of consideration of the Shoshone Project. Major Powell never explored the Powell flats given his name but he did advocate for the massive irrigation project that led to the establisnment of farms on the flats.
The mural on the elevator in Powell, Wyoming was painted in 2024 to replace an older one which had faded. Designed by Jeremiah Howe, Mindy Allen painted it over a month long period..

Lake Powell was created by the Glen Canyon Dam which finally completed construction in 1966. The dam is located on the Colorado River near Page, Arizona. Lake Powell supplies water to a number of Western states, including Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico.
This photo is taken on a scenic overlook not far from the dam. I thought the contrasting colors of the surrounding landscape were quite beautiful.

I like to be a creep and take random pictures of people in Powells. I like people-watching.

Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona. It is the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre feet (30 km³) of water when full. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the controversial Glen Canyon Dam, which also led to the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a popular summer destination. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869. In 1972, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established. It is public land managed by the National Park Service, and available to the public for recreational purposes.
The lake's main body stretches up Glen Canyon, but has also filled many (over 90) side canyons. The lake also stretches up the Escalante River and San Juan River where they merge into the main Colorado River. This provides access to many natural geographic points of interest like Rainbow Bridge National Monument, as well as some remnants of the Anasazi culture.

Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona, United States. Construction on Glen Canyon Dam began with a demolition blast keyed by the push of a button by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at his desk in the Oval Office on October 1, 1956. Upon completion of the dam on September 13, 1963, the Colorado River began to back up, no longer being diverted through the tunnels. The newly flooded Glen Canyon formed Lake Powell. Sixteen years elapsed before the lake filled to the 1,100 m level, on June 22, 1980.

I've been to the Portland area several times - but mostly outside of the city itself hiking.
This time we actually made a trip into the city and I had one request. I wanted to go to Powell's Books.
It did not disappoint.
Occupying a full city block with so many sections and books. I was very fond of the rare book room located inside.
Check it out if you are ever in Portland
