Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona, United States. Construction on Glen Canyon Dam began with a demolition blast keyed by the push of a button by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at his desk in the Oval Office on October 1, 1956. Upon completion of the dam on September 13, 1963, the Colorado River began to back up, no longer being diverted through the tunnels. The newly flooded Glen Canyon formed Lake Powell. Sixteen years elapsed before the lake filled to the 1,100 m level, on June 22, 1980.

P05210, the northbound auto train, soars over the bridge at Powells Creek on the RF&P. In just a few minutes, they will arrive at their destination of Lorton, VA. With no stops en route and an uneventful trip north, they'll wind up arriving about a half hour earlier than scheduled.

Cruising is about 50 miles of Lake Powell shoreline to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. It is one of the largest known natural bridges in the world.

Lake Powell is located in northern Arizona and stretches up into southern Utah. It's part of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

An evening shot, looking towards a ponderosa pine tree on the far shore and Giants Head Mountain on the left side of the frame. The sun has already set but the colours that were formed in the sky and water, from the lingering light, struck me as being quite beautiful. I also like how the shoreline, the breaking waves, the clouds and Giants Head Mountain are all pointing towards the upper left hand side of the frame, the source of the shining light. The photo was taken on the shores of Okanagan Lake in Trout Creek, BC, a small community which is part of Summerland.

Taken from a helicopter ride over the canyon which was

absolutely fantastic once they had got me on the helicopter.

In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell led the first expedition down the canyon. Powell set out to explore the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. Powell ordered a shipwright to build four reinforced Whitewall rowboats from Chicago and had them shipped east on the newly completed Continental railroad. He hired nine men, including his brother Walter, and collected provisions for ten months. They set out from Green River, Wyoming on May 24. Passing through (or portaging around) a series of dangerous rapids, the group passed down the Green River to its confluence with the Colorado River, near present-day Moab, Utah. Most of their food spoiled after getting wet in the waves or by heavy rains. Beaten up by ferocious whitewater and nearly out of food, three men left the expedition in the Grand Canyon, electing to walk 75 miles out across a desert to a Mormon settlement. Never seen again, their disappearance remains one of the most enduring mysteries of American western history.
