Holding my camera down near my board (you can see my left boot just there) as I poached one of my stashes (those are my tracks from earlier today and yesterday - not many people know about this little hidden run - and yet its just off main trails - local power!.
Powder Tower (Czech: Prašná brána, literally;Powder Gate is a Gothic tower in Prague, Czech Republic and one of the old city gates. It is one of the symbols of Prague, leading into the Old Town.
Dating from 1475, the Powder Tower was built as one of 13 gates to the city of Prague. When construction began, it was connected (via the small bridge at the right of the photo) to the royal palace. Before construction was completed, however, King Vladislav Jagellonský moved his residence to Prague Castle in 1485. Nevertheless, the Powder Tower remained important to the Bohemian kings - until 1836, the Bohemian monarchs would pass through the Powder Tower on their way to St. Vitus Cathedral for their coronation.
As the city grew beyond its old walls, the Powder Tower grew less and less important (except on those rare occasions when a new king was being crowned). By the 17th century, it was being used as a gunpowder storage facility - it was at this time that it developed its name. The tower was severely damaged in 1757 when Prague was occupied by the Prussians, but was eventually restored to its former glory in the 1870s and 1880s.
The Powder Tower was designed by master builder Matěj Rejsek based on plans by Peter Parler for the Old Town Bridge Tower at the foot of Charles Bridge. It is now one of the few remnants of the fortifications that once surrounded the city.
These roses were shot in Hanoi, Vietnam, in natural light at the window of my hotel room. For some of them I used my compact powder mirror to reflect some extra light.
These roses cost between 60 cents and $2 for a big bunch of 40, each bloom perfect and stunning and freshly cut that morning and brought into the city on the back of a bicycle or motorino.
Flowers in Hanoi are very inexpensive because it is the biggest city closest to the flower growing regions in the horth of the country.
Most of the flowers are for export - the ones pictures here are the rejects! That's right.
Maybe the blooms were just a bit too small or too big for type specified by the client.
Maybe the stem was too thick, a bit crooked, or the thorns were extra big.
Maybe there was too much pink or too little, or maybe two blooms doubled up on one stem.
To me, they were perfect, and smelled amazing! I was in Hanoi for three weeks, and my hotel room had big bunches of flowers standing all around. The bouquets were arranged in cut off plastic water bottles. I spent many a happy hour by the window with a makeshift podium in lieu of a tripod, snapping away beauty of a rose after rose after rose...
