In mid-January, Total Heliski saw our first industry-specific tour depart from all places, Las Vegas. As the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) came to a close, our members said their goodbyes to the throes of the Sin City, and their hectic meeting schedules. They were whisked by direct flight up to the tour base near Revelstoke, in BC Canada which was covered by a blanket of metre deep fresh powder snow.

The Powder Tower is one of the original 13 city gates in Old Town, Prague. Construction began in 1475. The tower was intended on being an attractive entrance into the city, instead of a defensive tower. The foundation stone was placed by Vladislav II. The city council gave Vladislav II the tower as a coronation gift. While it was being built, it was called the New Tower. The look of the tower was inspired by the work of Peter Parler on the Charles Bridge.
Vladislav II had to relocate due to riots, so the tower building stopped. He returned in 1485 to live back in Prague Castle, where he lived for the rest of his life, along with the rest of the Kings of Bohemia who lived in Prague. Kings would not return to use the tower or Royal Court until using it for coronation ceremonies starting again in 1836, where they would pass through the tower to go to St. Vitus Cathedral.
The gate was used to store gunpowder in the 17th century, hence the name Powder Tower or Powder Gate. The gate suffered considerable damage during the Battle of Prague. The sculptures on the tower were replaced in 1876.

This shoot was inspired by the work of Darren McDonald and Solve Sundsbo. I conducted this shoot in an open field so that i had lots of space to throw the powder into the wind onto my model. I styled her all in white to create a blank canvas for the paint so that the patterns created just by using the wind.

During the Civil War, as a constant source of fresh water, the Lost River Cave was a popular encampment for both Confederate and Federal forces moving up and down the Nashville-Louisville Pike. The Army of the Cumberland briefly encamped here after the fighting in Kentucky before returning to Nashville. Three powder houses, designed to safely store gunpowder, were built in the Lost River Valley during this conflict, though it is unknown who built them and when.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Blue with a white chest. Head black with a broad white band from pectoral-fin base to throat.Also has a white band at base of lips. Dorsal fin yellow (except white margin and black submarginal line). Anal and pelvic fins white. Common length 19 cm (7.5 inches).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Indian Ocean in shallow, clear coastal and island reefs, 0.5-25 m (1.5-80 feet) . Usually on reef flats and along upper seaward slopes; sometimes in huge aggregations.
DIET IN THE WILD: benthic algae.
REPRODUCTION: Monogamous, open water/substratum egg scatterers
CONSERVATION: IUCN Least concern.
REMARKS: A distinguishing feature of surgeonfishes, tangs, and
unicornfishes is a modified scale on the caudal peduncle, which forms a scalpel-like sharp blade often covered with toxic slime. These spines are used for species recognition, defense, and competition for mates. Note: Acanthus means “thorn” or “spine”.
